Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: If you travel to Cuba and visit Varadero, the best option we recommend you is snorkel or dive in Beach Coral, we have a group of highly experienced professionals every year we serve more than 2000 clients who had never done the activity. We wait for you on your vacation, you will not regret it I assure you. Snorkeling at Coral Beach or Coral Beach: The snorkeling at Coral Beach or Playa Coral is from the edge of the beach, where there have a depth of less than 1 meter, for beginners we impacted an initiation class where they are taught how to swim and the basics of the equipment . Beginners and inexperienced will have a life jacket, with this all the time they will be on the surface. You will swim approximately 80 meters from the edge until you are on the coral barrier. This activity is from about 45 minutes to 1 hour. Where you can feed the fish with your own hands and even touch them. This excursion if you want this split in 2 Parts. The second part is the Saturn Cave. Saturn Cave: It is a natural swimming pool where fresh water and salt water flows, with formations of stalactites and stalagmites. There is a lake and two galleries where you can find blind shrimp and fish. It has parts where its depth is of 1 meter to 2 meters, as also it has 22 meters of depth in its deepest part but it is so crystalline the water that can be seen to the bottom. You can only do the snorkeling activity as it is very small and deep which is not ideal for diving.

We took a scooter out here so we could have all the time we wanted without a tour. You can either hit the Laguna de Maya snorkel company and pay 10 cuc to go with the guides, or drive another 500m and do the same thing independently. My girlfriend decided her swimming ability wasn't strong enough to go alone so we paid.

With the company, life jackets are mandatory and you basically follow the guide out to the Coral without much stopping time, then turn back.

There isn't a large variety of fish but the guides do draw a feeding frenzy with some food, which was pretty cool.

We got there as another tour of about 15 people were setting out so in the end, we basically were taking a tour instead of the independent swim I had originally sought out. You end up bumping into others often. I think they said it was an hour swim. We had set out for more, but really there wasn't enough to see to make a day of it.

If you scooter to their lot, a security guy will tell you that the lot is safe and watched, but they don't tell you if there is a cost (I don't think they get many visitors outside of the Jeep/bus tours). When we left, the guard stood there in silence until I gave him 1.50 cuc (I only had enough cash for the highway toll back) and he seemed satisfied with that.

If you are a competent swimmer/snorkeler, pass by Laguna de Maya and swim alone for free. Otherwise, it is safer to go with the guides, and not a terrible value for the price as a novice.

“Some of the best snorkelling in Cuba”
Reviewed 8 March 2014

You don't really come here for the beach, but for the coral and fish. Take an hour or two and go swimming, this is some of the best snorkelling in Cuba. Be careful of the reef when swimming over, the stuff is very sharp and hurts if you hit it. If you have an underwater camera, DO bring it. Don't leave your GoPro back at the hotel like I did.

“Snorkeling trip”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

Enjoyed seeing the fish once we got through the coral "corridor" on the way out, which was very narrow. It was a bit nerve- wracking, as the waves kept threatening to crash us into the coral. The beach itself was also kind of dirty, there were a lot of guys hanging around trying to sell stuff, and we had to leave our beach bags out in the open while we were in the water. We signed up with Cuba Tours in the hotel lobby because Sunwing didn't offer a half day snorkeling tour, and the snorkeling guides were great, but we did notice a place farther down the beach that the Jeep Tour stops at. It looked like it might be more organized and maybe the coral corridor isn't as narrow there ?? The waves would be just as rough though, as it was just a short distance down the road. Also, if you're not keen on taking a ride in a taxi, this tour may not be for you. We expected a bus, but because only four of us had signed up that day, Cuba Tours sent a taxi driver with the snorkeling gear. He took us to Saturno Cave and snorkeling, and it was fine, but he didn't speak much English and it just felt a little sketchy.
