Well we arrived back from Cuba yesterday 31 July 2012. I can honestly say when you arrive at the paradisus you think great what a stunning looking complex great reception with the various fish ponds absolutely fab! Then you get taken to your room and to be honest I wanted to cry the room itself looked okay then you stepped into the bathroom and I can honestly say I have stayed in better three star hotels with better bathrooms. The bathroom was bright pink and extremely small with blood splattered down the wall where I can only assume someone had killed a mosquito, very very dated also with damp on the ceiling it was awful! The next morning I asked to change our room. I was shown one of the blocks that had been recently updated and decided to move my family there - what a shame the holiday had to start this way. The room we were moved to was 1714 if anyone wants a decent room ! Paying the amount we did I honestly thought it would be five star all the way but unfortunately it wasn't. Also we were in a double bed and to my amazement one night I pulled the bed sheet back to find the maid had put two single sheets on the bed instead of one double which was extremely uncomfortable and shocking for a so called five star hotel!

Room Tip: If you can go royal service do so

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 July 2012

Traveled November 2011 - Spent 15 days at the Paradisus.

To start off, We are a Married Couple in our Late 20's giving this review.

THIS IS A LONG DETAILED REVIEW. IF YOUR LOOKING FOR THE BEST POSSIBLE DESCRIPTION, KEEP READING. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING SHORT AND SWEET, TAKE YOUR CHANCES ON OTHER REVIEWS. BUT DOING YOUR HOMEWORK WILL ALWAYS PREVAIL.

Well to start off I cant see what everyone is complaining about. This is BY FAR the nicest resort in all of Cuba. (having stayed at the Iberostar 2 times already) The staff here are exceptionally amazing for all the BS they go through dealing with over pretentious, stuck up travelers all day long.

PLEASE NOTE: First of all. If you need 3 turn down services per day and someone to your Re-fold your napkin on your lap every time you wipe your mouth. Then don't come to Cuba!! Don't go anywhere for that matter because NO ONE will be able to please you. The people that work at these resorts are some of the hardest working people on earth. They bend over backwards to please you while taking an earful of your rude abruptness, and then do it with a smile. Tell me the last time you didn't become confrontational when someone verbally cut you down? Yes you are on vacation, and paid for a relaxing time. But things happen, places run out of stuff, the maid forgot to put a mint on your pillow, the "partiers" woke you up a couple times throughout the night... So what!? get over it and move on with your day. the fact that some people state that their vacation was ruined because they had to switch rooms because the first one wasn't up to their standards is pitiful. Either way, if you want an honest persons un-candid review, keep reading...

CHECK IN: Upon arrival you go to the front desk and are greeted by friendly personnel that are willing to take care of your needs. Upon checking in, you are quickly presented with a glass of champagne to start off your beautiful stay in paradise. Yes sometimes your rooms aren't ready yet, but that all depends on the time you check in, if its before 3pm, chances are there is still someone in it, or the maids haven't gotten to it yet to take it easy, grab a drink from the lobby bar and make your way around the resort to get familiar to where you will be staying for the time you have there.

BAGGAGE DELIVERY: From the front desk you are directed back to the entrance of the hotel for you, and your luggage to be driven to your room. If your bag boy has to take up all 17 of your suitcases up flights of stairs and then you wonder why he is standing in front of you "expecting" a tip? you have to be out of your mind..clearly. So tip! its customary, to do it in most places around the world, so why think just because you paid for an all inclusive and it says "tips included" that you shouldn't have to tip? it shows your generosity and appreciation for the services you received. Yes its their job to do what they are doing. but unless you have done your research you wont know that the maximum income that a Cuban person takes in a month before tips is $40 CUC. They do most of their survival on the tourist industry, so why not help contribute a little here and there. its certainly not going to kill you to hand out an extra $5-10 a day to someone for their direct service to you after you obviously paid thousands to stay there in the first place. and its not like Mexico where they are demanding $ before they do anything for you.

ROOMS: The rooms in this hotel are basic rooms. Yes some people will consider them out dated a bit, but your in Cuba. not New York City. If there is an issue with your room, then ask to be moved. Simple as that. don't let it ruin your vacation. In general All 3 times i have stayed here I have been quite content with the rooms. your only there to sleep anyway.

HOTEL GROUNDS: One word, BEAUTIFUL! They pay special attention to detail here, the gardeners work 6 days a week, 12-14 hours a day keeping this place in top immaculate condition. And if you happen to see any one you can ask them to cut you down a fresh coconut from one of the trees and they will do it on the spot. or you can get a special hat made. but again, if these guys are going out of thier way to do this for you. TIP! it takes 2 hours to make one of the hats and they do it on one of the few shortened breaks they have throughout the day. so be courtious, if they walk up to you and offer and you dont want one, a simple no thank you is all you need and no feelings will be hurt.

POOLS: This resort has 2 pools. A Massive one that includes a swim up bar, and a smaller one that is deeper where they hold scuba diving lessons in. The main pool is beautiful, there are lots of chairs around it, and almost no place is a bad place to be in while poolside. Unless you like the shade, then you will find yourself moving throughout the day to keep away from the sun. they do have bali beds(queen size bed that has a roof and mosquito net around it.

BARS: There are 3 main bars in the hotel and 2 on the beach. the 3 main ones, 1 in the lobby, 1 on the other side of the swim up bar, and 1 as you get closer to the main beach have the most selection. The 2 smaller ones on the beach have limited drink selection. So make yourself aware of this before getting upset that premium alcohol and fancy cappuccinos aren't served everywhere. The main lobby does get very busy at night because that is where the evening entertainment is. so expect there to be somewhat of a wait for drinks at the bar, and longer if you have a server. But hey, word to the wise, that 3 letter word can go a long way in this scenario. So TIP! by doing so, the bartenders recognize you right away and will look to serve you faster. Same goes for the servers. chances are she will bring your drinks first before everyone else and walk by your table more often to see if you are in need of re-fills. In this case especially...Give a little, get Alot! you don't have to tip for every drink. a $5 bill or CUC coins will keep you in the VIP treatment for the rest of the night.

FOOD: First off. Cuba's food isn't the most delicious you will ever taste, the country has no direct sources for spices or additives, so most people view the food in the main buffet to be a little bland. I will be the first to say that its not the most flavorful. Other than that it is very edible, and as you would anywhere, be cautious on what you try. If your not sure of something.....DON'T EAT IT! Don't be surprised because you got sick off of something you have never eaten before. When worst comes to Worst, Stick to what you know. it makes everyone's time a lot more enjoyable. Now, There are 4 A La Carte restaurants to choose from if you decide the main buffet isn't for you. You need to reserve these places in advance so talk to the front desk and they will point you in the right direction. The Japanese restaurant seems to be a favorite among all of them to everyone we talked to, so maybe book it a couple times and try their variety. Besides that, the lobby has a buffet, There is an Italian, Romantica, and Local BBQ. All of which I tried and I found to be very good. Also the bread in this hotel is probably some of the best Ive ever tasted, so enjoy it while you can! they serve bread with every meal in the A La Cartes except the Japanese of course.

SPA: The spa is expensive. we did a couples massage, it was OK. Personally I'm not into massages, but my wife is and she said it was average-nothing special. The building and area are very nice though. and the people are very very nice. its hit and miss like everything else. there couldn't have been better massage therapists there, but we didn't have the pick of the littler. no biggie.

BEACH: PERFECT! The water is amazing and the white sand is very soft. They hold games and activities every day, they have people that come up to you trying to get you excited and to partake, but its not mandatory. Just enjoy your time in the sun on one of the nicest private beaches in the world! They do have drink servers out there, but again, don't expect them to come running up to refill you every time with out a tip. a simple CUC coin is good for this for every 5th drink we found. and they don't serve you glassware on the beach for obvious reasons.

FINAL OVERALL OUTLOOK: This place is truly a great place to stay. Personally it ranks in the Top 5 of places Ive been in my lifetime, my wife as well. if you are a seasoned traveler such as myself, you will know that you cant go somewhere with irrational expectations that everything is as perfect as it is in the pictures. which really, for this resort I would say its a 9.5 out of 10 of what the pictures show. But its not always this way. The staff are very professional and friendly if you are also showing that same courtesy to them. People are very quick to blame and give negative reviews but not share both sides of the story. so keep that in mind when reading along to other reviews. the place itself is so well kept that it makes you want to stay longer. Being here you feel like your on a deserted island. and it didn't take me 3 visits here to figure that out. so do yourself a favor, When you get your glass of champagne upon arrival, be sure to take a walk to the end of the lobby and take a look out at the beautiful beach with crystal clear water. Then take a deep breath and remind yourself of where you are and that you are on vacation and its time to relax(you could be at home working). If you can do that, the rest is history. you will be guaranteed to have a great time while staying here.

I know it seems like Ive preached TIP TIP TIP. but really, I maybe spent $10-15 at most per day in tips for the 2 of us. Chances are if your coming to this resort. you can afford to be generous.

HELPFUL HINT: Bring a large coffee mug or drink container with you for bar service. This will provide more time in the sun and less money spent on tips. Tip when you get it filled the first time. 2, cash in $50 into $1 CUC coins for tipping or depending on how long you stay. we did $80 for 15 days worth of tips.

If you have made it this far, Congratulations on the long read, and also the knowledge that you have an honest, every day persons opinion and not some pretentious princess that cant ever be impressed. Have a great time and just enjoy yourself, thats why they call it a Vacation. Even the best hotels in the world have people complain about them. So be your own judge.

And No I was not paid or given anything to write this...and yes I WILL go back there again.

But If you found this helpful to you, please hit that little green button below that says YES!

Gracias and Adiós!

Room Tip: Request a room in building 11. it has the best views out of the entire hotel resort. Bring a lar...

Beautiful sea views from hotel and gorgeous white sands. Excellent staff. Special mention to Hector and Ladiy Ladiey for the beach bar cocktails. Junior suite quite spacious and comfortable. Spotlessly clean. Few problems as missing bulb, stiff balcony door, shower broken as was coffee marker. All resolved immediately but not what you expect in 5 star hotel. Major gripe was that the room did not a proper hair dryer-bad hair days needless to say! Stayed in room 3025. Nice quiet part of resort. Air conditioning poor.Abundance of food but shocked to see birds sitting in bowls nibbling on food-cannot believe the food was not covered in the buffet restaurant. Complained about this.Spoiled for choice of food and various places to eat.
Fantastic main pool with many loungers and sheltered areas. Spa truly beautiful.
Gorgeous resort let down by the above.
Unlikely to rush back

We arrived in June 2012 and stayed for 11nights we put our valuables in the safe which was a swipe card safe. Two days before we were due to come home I checked the safe I discovered there was £80 missing. Immediately went to reception to report it we were told to go to security who took our details. We were out the room from 9 in the morning until 7 at night .only 2people could have done this the maid or the person who filled the mini bar. They said that they would make enquiries and get back to us .on the last day 15minutes before we were about to leave Miguell came over and told us there was no evidence any one had been in our room he made u feel that he did not believe you .i told him someone had taken the money and they would do it again until they were caught he could not look us in the face.

We stayed here end of April / May for two weeks, and again wished we'd booked for longer.
The check in was much better this time with a glass of bubbly! Also, we got an Ocean View room which we disn't ask for, and Champagne in the room as it was our anniversary.
The rooms are undergoing improvement, one block was closed off when we were leaving, but again, although the rooms are a bit tired, it in no way spoiled our stay.
The lovely staff remembered us from last year, we were greeted with hugs and kisses every day, the staff are brilliant. Although they have been shuffled around the resort, Justo, Enrique, Anel and Yoselyn treated us as friends. The staff in the Crystal bar remembered us also ( not sure if thats a good thing !! ) Eliovez is a star!! What a fantastic barman, a true asset to the hotel. Must also mention Rigo, the Thomas Cook rep, what a kind and helpful man. Infact all the staff are great, and, the entertainment, we took more notice this year, were very good, the Michael Jackson tribute was excellent.
Nothing disappointed us, the pools, fabulous beach, restaurants, bars etc. cannot fault the hotel in any way.
The only complaint would be the rudeness of the Russian guests, what a shame they took the trouble to learn 16 Vodkas in English, but not please or thankyou! I am sure I am not the only person to notice how rude and offensive they were to the staff and other guests.
This time we did a private day trip to Havanna with another family, would recommend this option, as you can plan your own day with a tour guide.
Trip to Cayo Blanco on the catamaran, beautiful, would do this again.
2 day trip to Cuen Fegus (not sure if I've spelt that right!) Waterfalls and Carribean beach, then Trinidad, Santa Spiritus and the resting place of Che G. It was a really long and tiring trip. Would not do it again , but the Museum to Che was interesting and moving.
Only other things we did were hire a moped to see all of Varedero, speed boat trip, good fun and have a meal at the Golf course, I believe this house was called Xanadu, It was a stunning location and a pricey meal!!
Saving up to go again, apart from the must do trip to Havanna, and the Cayo blanco, will spend the rest of the time chiling out on that fabulous beach!! Cannot wait to return, wonderful holiday.
Teresa and Terry

Room Tip: We stayed in block 15 both times, by the sea and the Wedding Gazebo, nice and quiet

We came to Paradisus for our honeymoon in early July for five-days, and it was exactly the way a honeymoon needs to be. With the Royal Service, we were treated the way you want to be and need to be after a hectic wedding. Immediately, Oswaldo was cordial and very inviting, helping us with our luggage and telling us where to go. The staff at the Royal Service were so helpful and set everything up for us. The best part of the trip was our butlers, Fernando and Yoandy. They made everything we did, such as eating at the nice restaurants, getting our cabana beds, and going to the spa, seamless and extremely enjoyable. They checked in with us daily to ensure that our experience was fantastic. We had breakfast delivered to our room everyday while we sat by the most amazing view of the ocean. Lunches at the Royal Service restaurant, served by Yanet and Reynier, were awesome and perfectly portioned out. We could have as much as we wanted, and we always found ourselves filled and satisfied. We went to a luxurious pool every day, hosted by a very responsive and diligent bartender, and we relaxed. It was just what we needed. The Royal Service is the way to go, and this place is really magical and wonderful.

Room Tip: Go with the Royal Service and ask for Fernando to be your butler!

We paid for 3 nights in the Paradisus Varadero, 2 months prior to our visit. My fiancé (a Cuban with dual citizenship in the U.S.) used her Visa card online at meliacuba.com. When we arrived at the resort, they informed us that they did not accept any credit cards that were issued in the US. We told them that we knew that and that's why we paid online well in advance (knowing full well that Meliá is a Spanish company and would process the payment).

The staff basically told us to leave as they made no offer of compromise and offered no suggestions on how to resolve the problem (this is after we had spoken to more than one person claiming to be the manager). No one ever tried dealing with Meliá directly to see if they would honor the credit card transaction that they, themselves processed online. We budgeted to bring enough cash for the trip, thinking that we had already paid for an all-inclusive resort. When we realized that this was not true, we had to pay for a another resort out of pocket.

Basically, this hotel is not an option for Americans unless they plan to carry around 2-3 thousand dollars (CuC's) with them... even if youpay for it online with a credit card. But, it the resort did look very nice...

Dear guest,
We sincerely appreciate your taking time to provide your comments and feedback.
However, we inform you that our hotel have plenty of repetitive American Cuban guests every year who are very welcome anytime in our resort.
In Cuba, credit cards issued by American financial institutions, such as American Express cards, are not accepted. Other credit cards are generally accepted at major establishments such as state-run hotels and restaurants, and other international resort chains.
I sincerely hope that we will have the opportunity to welcome you back to our resort.
