Overall this was a good experience, with a few exceptions. Our room was wonderful - we had upgraded to concierge service, which we really enjoyed. The maid service was excellent. The food was good (this has not always been the case for us in Cuba), and the beach wonderful. It is definitely a seniors resort, we were on the younger end of the age scale, but enjoyed the quiet. However, trying to get a drink from a waiter in the lobby bar or on the patio was near impossible. The only way one could overindulge would be if you brought your own bottle. We sat on the patio nearly every evening, and only once were we offered more than one drink. Whether you tipped or not seemed to make no difference. The other disappointment was the massage service. Most resorts have a spacious spa area with some ambience. The masseuse works out of a tiny, hard to find room with orange peeling paint. Don't waste your money on the massage, as it was not particularly relaxing.
The two things that will affect whether we return to Cuba (to this resort or any other) will be 1)cell service and 2) flight times. I had no cell service. I have always been able to text from Cuba before (this was our 6th visit), but had no service at all this time. I have to be able to touch base for business reasons, so this is a deal breaker for us, unless we can find a resort with wifi (and we know that Cuban internet service is unreliable, at best), Flight times were ridiculous - flying through the night. 2 days of being awake for 24 hrs+ will make me look hard at my options in the future. I will be pushing for an alternate destination on our next vacation.
