A bit about ourselves first... we are a married couple in our early 30's, traveling with our kids, our daughter is 7 and son is 4. We travel to Florida and an all inclusive resort once a year each. We typically stay in the Mayan, but have been to Varadero twice before but this is the first time with the kids.
The hotel was exactly what you expect. We had a ocean view room with two singles pushed together and a roll-away bed the first night and then our planned upgrade to a suite overlooking the ocean for the rest of our stay.
Rooms - they were clean, quite a bit run down, but as long as the a/c worked we were good to go, lol. Our maid did our room every day but we didn't find it anything better than what it should be. We tipped $3 a day and left some things with the money and it made no difference. We always had some towel art and a note but I would have appreciated extra towels or my floor cleaned. Friends we met said their maid was awesome, cool towel art, chatty, extra linens...
We stayed on the 3rd floor and took the stairs, a lot. They have a stair case on the outside of the building that we used quite a bit, espicially when going to the buffet as you could get directly into the restaurant.
BUFFET - First off, COFFEE is AWESOME from the lobby bar or beach rest but crappy in the buffet. We would get it from the lobby bar and bring to breakfast in the morning. There was always something to eat, they do a good job of having a large variety and the cuban sandwich station is always open!
BEACH - very clean, something for everyone, fresh pizza's (but took FOREVER to get), ice cream, french fries one day - yummy! Staff was mixed, there are a few that are really nice and then there are a few that aren't, we tried to at least tip a dollar each time.
CUBAN - was at the beach rest, the food was okay, we did chicken and the mahi mahi fish. Was nice change from buffet.
JAPANESE - was very nice, sushi, tempura, fish. Yummy - no green tea, or chop stix though, lol. We had 2 ladies come up to us afterwards and ask us how we were feeling as they were ill, they had the chicken and we had fish and were fine.
ITALIAN - FANTASTIC! Food was awesome, hot, fresh, delicious. Most friendly staff too!
KIDS CLUB - was okay, the hours are different that what is posted. 10am - 12:30pm and 3pm - 5pm. One of the ladies was awesome, the younger one seemed like she didn't want to be there... but my kids enjoyed. We didn't use every day but it was a nice break for us and they got to meet some friends.
KIDS DISCO - 8pm on Mon, Wed, Fri and Sat. They don't tell you the schedule and the front desk has no clue! The kids LOVED this!!!!
ENTERTAINMENT - They have a stretching class every morning, dance in the afternoon, darts, beach volleyball at noon etc. Night shows were good and we had a CRISTAL type beer garden one night with snacks - awesome! They had a mojito bar etc.
POOL - this was the only disappointment for me. The pool was very small, shallow and there is a liner that is lifting up off of the old tiles it is covering. The stairs were horrible trying to get in and out. Also, there is no shade or swim up bar. (we knew there was a pool bar but no swim up bar, others were complaining as they thought pool bar meant swim up bar).
BEACH - Now this the BEST!!! Fantastic!!! Lots of chairs, shade huts (my kids called them tree umbrellas), ocean is perfect!!!! Had some windy days and the waves were so much fun!! I didn't see one jellyfish or any dangerous thing in the week we were there. They comb and clean the beach but don't comb where the chairs are so we kept finding cigarette butts when playing in the sand - PLEASE DO NOT PUT BUTTS IN THE SAND - GROSS!!!! We did get up and put towels on our seats before breakfast or you would not find a shaddy spot in the morning, come the afternoon there were usually spots available.
TRIPS - We didn't do any "excursions" as with the kids, mine were too small for some of them and a whole day is too long for my 4 y.o. We did go to Varadero a few times, and had dinner at La Fondue. IT IS MY FAV!!! We went on our previous trip and loved it then too!! MUST CHECK IT OUT!
We also took a taxi to the Dolphin show, this is the same place where they have swimming with the dolphins. To see just the show was $15. We paid an extra $5 for my daughter to get a picture kissing the dolphin at the end. I had a few issues with this, but I am not going to get into it here, as I really try to look at the positive things.
ITEMS - I tried to bring down items that were needed, vitamins (calcium, magnesium, D3, Omegas), cell phones (unlocked), razors, school supplies, feminine products are a biggie!!! Please try and bring some, any help is always appreciated. You can email your hotel ahead of time and see if there are specific items needed. I am not saying to tip using these items, but to help them out as some things are hard to come by.
OVERALL - We had a fun, relaxing trip. Got to go in some very old old cars, meets new friends and spend some quality time as a family. We flew with Sunwing and am sad to report on our way home, we have a suitcase that is missing. We checked 4 bags and only 3 bags made it to Toronto. We have had no luck getting anyone at Sunwing to help us or answer our messages and it has been almost 6 days now.... that is the only negative thing I have to report.
If anyone as any questions please feel free to ask - I love trip advisor and the people on here!
Cheers and have a great day!
