Our first trip to Cuba but have travelled in the Caribbean extensively. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to breezes and would go back. I agree with the other poster that you should understand about cuba before arriving as it is unlike most other tourist destinations Access to most of the items and information we take for granted is limited.
Rooms: We booked a "run of the house" package with air canada but ended up staying in the garden suites on the first floor. It was a wonderful tropical experience The room was huge with a second seating area as well as a tv nook area. It was always well cleaned with towel art on the beds each day. The beds and furniture were good for cuba think cottage country Our room had the most wonderful balcony overlooking the gardens which you could just walk out. We spent many afternoons there. One warning we had a flash rainfall overnight which dumped about 5cm of water on our floor overnight The staff immediately cleaned it up but we were lucky we did not have anything on the floor to get ruined. Perhaps ask for second floor to avoid this.
Staff: Everyone we met was wonderful, funny and entertaining The front desk, bar staff and restaurant waitstaff were fabulous. The beach grill chef making the burgers was so nice everyday the security guards were always ready for a friendly morning chat and always watched over us and our things.
Location. I just loved being on the closer end to the city of varadero. We walked the beach into town and also did the horse and buggy and mini train around the area. We walked to the windmill restaurant along the road easily and always felt safe at night
Entertainment. Make your own. Not too much happening I would have loved to have more Cuban music playing poolside and beachside. There seems to be no trouble finding musicians in the rest of cuba so why is it so quiet here? But because the resort is small and intimate we made so many great friends and still had a great time. There are scheduled activities each night but not great and not well publicized so watch closely for the days and times.
Food: We came with low expectations but were still caught by surprise. If you have never been to cuba it is hard to explain. Everyone tries very hard. The buffet looks great and well stocked and the a la cart restaurants have a nice presentation. But the food is not good It's a combination of not having the right ingredients and also not being exposed to worldwide cooking styles, flavours and techniques. Or maybe they think tourists like to eat this way ? Anyway it seems to be the same at other places we ate and from others we talked to so I wouldn't take it as a negative against this resort in particular. All vegetables were canned Meats were either stewed to death in a tasteless gravy or fried to death and dried out and then topped with a sauce that tasted like one of five Campbell soups. Many times I could not really identify the meat . Luncheon meats had a spongy texture that I really couldn't eat The cheese is like goat cheese with an unusual flavour. the bread was wonderful and homemade. The butter is from Germany and good to go on most things. The fresh fruit when ripe is great Once we had beans and rice which was very good. Fried bananas are very good and the sugar cookies are the best dessert Grilled fish and lobster is not bad.
The two restaurants on the resort are nice for the experience. The Italian one was much dressier
We loved the coffee bar under the Cuban restaurant. Only wish we had found it sooner.
We would definitely come back but would bring a suitcase full of must haves to help us over the food issues. Here is our list. Peanut butter, a nice jam, a bottle of syrup, luncheon meats and cheeses for sandwiches in the beach or pepperoni for the pizza, chips, chocolate bars and cookies. Also hot sauce , ketchup and yogurt. These items would also make nice gifts for staff as you cannot buy them anywhere. Only thing close is a can of Pringles which will cost you $6.00 But don't know what you are allowed to bring in. I would definitely check as those guys in customs are not accommodating
