Quiet hotel, fairly clean, staff keep to themselves mostly. The beaches are incredible but they are the same all along that stretch of beach. Entertainment was minimal and not that good. THe food was rough but all Canadians we spoke to had issues with the food at all the different resorts. TIps : take peanut butter, jam, snacks (there are no chips or choclate bars to speak of), popcorn etc. and they have no pepsi or coke products period. The PEPPER tastes ok but has an odour that can make the food smell bad, take your own. The bread will be the freshest you ever had. They cook a lot of fish if you like that kind of food. The hotdogs and fries are the closest to our food, the hamburgers are ok, if you make sure they are well cooked (there is grisle in the burgers). Al A Carte restaurants are a little better than the buffet.

Varedaro is very safe to visit and the food is a little better there(really cheap). THe dolphin swim is worth the money and the Bellamar Caves are incredible but wear good shoes, it is slippery and rocky. Overall CUBA is worth the money but don't expect great things in the food and you will have a great time.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Tuxpan and our expectations were very low as everyone told us that Cuba isnt the best place to visit. Tuxpan was fine, its not a four star... its truly basic. If you really like basic and not extraordinary.. go to Cuba. If your heart is really in Cuba... theres other hotels that are alot better. The food at tuxpan was so boring that a few friends and I walked through the beach to the hotel beside us.. and the food was better there.
My personal opionion is that if you spending ANY money you wanna go somewhere WORTH YOUR MONEY. Tuxpans bar doesnt serve havana club.. the rum is some cheap stuff.... the entertainment at night SUCKS.... and the entertainment during the day hardly exists.
Of course the staff there are great but Im sure the service is great everywhere!
The beds.... are actually horrible... these reviews are not overexaggerating...
Of course the beach is amazing but its also amazing in cancun. Its the same same same beach as Cancun.
Also the club in the hotel isnt bad... it might actually be the best thing there.. so if you do get a chance to go to tuxpan... go to the club

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE; DONT SPEND YOUR VACATION REGRETTING YOUR HOTEL CHOICE. If you really DONT LIKE someone... tell them to stay at Tuxpan.. thats the way I look at it.

Our stay in cuba this year was amazing at the TUXPAN ! I was a little worried, as I had read tooo many reviews. Finally decided to stop reading as it is to hard to satisfy alot of people. Our room was VERY clean , yes the beds are like a peice of concrete, but we managed to sleep ! As my husband said, just have another drink before you go to bed and sleep won't be a problem ! The food was great, lots of prok, chicken and we only experienced the weiners on the buffet once! There is always lots to eat, and if you are starving it is your own fault, cause there are so many choices ! the resort it self is very clean and i am so excited to go back with our kids next year ! William at the pool bar is one amazing dude, so much fun ! Get him to set you up with a lobster dinner for 12 pecos very good lunch ! Great holiday, you make it what you want. We got what we wanted a GREAT HOLIDAY!! 2 thumbs up to the TUXPAN !

My sister and I booked a week in this hotel at the end of Jan 2009. The hotel was spotless, the meals, as other observers have noted, were Cuban. Lots of pork, cabbage, fish but good fresh breads, lots of veggies and fruit so if you chose carefully, a very good diet.

However, if you have any mobility issues, as my sister does, think about this hotel or any hotel that you cannot be sure has elevator service to all levels, grab bars in washrooms and the like. To enter this hotel requires a full flight of stairs, to reach the bar or food service area, pool or beach from the elevator accessed lobby which involves at least a full flight of very difficult stairs. The room toilets are very low making it difficult for many to comfortably use them. The bath tub is very high so climbing over the rim involves some dexterity.

The staff was polite and helpful to the extent they could be. The food issue was difficult for some used to a more high end diet but again, it was well presented and appeared to be of reasonable quality.

January may not be a good time to visit this resort if you are a beach person. The beach faces north and it can be cool and windy. I would expect that by March, this northern orientation would be appreciated.

I would recommend it on the basis of its cleanliness, staff location, about 4 km from Veradero--a nice walk. I would not recommend it to anyone who has any difficulty with stairs or knee and lower leg limitations.

I just returned from Tuxpan, stayed the week of Jan 23/09. Went with my mom, aunt and cousin. This was my third trip to Cuba. This resort was good for the deal we got. The pool was very nice, but too cold to really enjoy. We spent most of our time on the beach which was absolutely perfect. Clear blue waters! We enjoyed the catamaran. You can arrange with the watersport guys for a snorkelling trip at a cost of $20 pesos, not the best location, but for $20 you can't go wrong. Its well worth the 2 hours you get out of it. The rooms are clean but a bit dated. The beds were hard, but if you get the foam you are fine. Either way we didn't spend much time in the room, so as long as it was clean...and no bugs....it was just fine. The view from our balcony was gorgeous, overlooking the pool and the ocean beyond. This made up for any issues with the room itself.

The food...well you never go to Cuba for the food... but we managed just fine. The omlettes were the best and the fresh bread in the morning was great. We always managed to find something. Your best bet is to eat at the pool bar for lunch and book the al la cartes for dinner. The food is bland, so bring your own hot sauce if you can! The people working at the resort are the best, this is what made our trip. Nestor and William at the pool bar will take care of you just fine! Danny, the front security is the best ever too!! Overall, great trip. I would go back to this resort for the staff and the beach.

My wife and I are very experienced travelers and have returned to the Tuxpan 4 times and each time have been very pleased.Because of the low cost and short flight time from Toronto we find this property hard to resist.
Food:Just think of the cost and distance that the Cuban's have to deal with because of the embargo.
The property itself is on one of the most beautiful beaches anywhere.
The rooms ,hallways and common area's are always kept very clean.
And one other very important point is that this hotel has a Public Relations Dept.to deal with guest situations. How many hotels have you been to where this department even exists. The department is managed by a very capable person named Raisy. We have seen her deal with the most complex issues and always they have been resolved with fairness and a smile.Raisy in our opinion is one of the main reasons we continue to support this hotel because no matter what the issue/situation she always deals with it fairly and with the utmost professionalism.

We visited Tuxpan with a family of 5. The resort was clean. The beds were hard but we still slept well. The pool was nice but too cold to really enjoy it because they have no heaters and it is their winter. Have a drink or two and the water will get warmer.LOL.

The kids swam everyday even though it was cold.

The beach was absolutely beautiful and clean. We could only use the catamaran and kayaks once the whole week due to high winds but they were available when the green flag was flying.
The town of Varadero was only 4km away and we walked both ways, once by road and the return by the beach. A taxi to town for the 5 of us was 7pesos one way. Be careful to set your fare before you enter the taxi and or the horse and buggy ride. The horse and buggy driver got us good when he said it would cost a total of 15pesos for a one way trip but then tried to charge us 75pesos once we got to the hotel. We worked out a deal.

Back to the resort, the food was okay..not as bad as we thought reading the reviews before we left. They had bacon every day, omlettes, fresh fruit, breads and fresh juices. There was lots of meats and seafood at every meal. I took soya sauce and mayo which was good with the rice and hamburgers. They have good ketchup and mustard.
The service was okay but not as friendly as other places I have visited. Some people were great, while others were just not that friendly. We tipped alot with clothes, school supplies, shoes, tools, and some money. People appreciated this and treated us just fine. One of the bar tenders never smiled and I gave her a nice new dress and panty hose and then she became warmer towards us. You must understand that these people serve so many touritst daily and it becomes repetitive for them and some tourists are rude and demanding. The workers are just trying to make a living and they have to put up with alot of drunks and other spoiled tourists. We always treated people with respect and we got it in return. I saw that the tips they go twere pooled together and I think that they shared them at the end of their shifts.
I was asked may times for childrens clothes in lieu of money. I gave away so much stuff but the need for clothes seems to be never ending. Even the beach vendors and braid hairdresser wanted clothes instead of the 10pesos she charged for doing hair.
The resort was pretty good overall. Take some extra condiments and spices if you like because the taste of the food was bland. We were never hungry or thirsty so don't worry about that. Our kids enjoyed the experience and they loved the hamburgers ,hotdogs, and fries daily.
The entertainment was nothing special and I found it boring. The entertainment staff could work a little harder to make it more fun and play more games with the tourists. Instead, they were more into themselves and sat in the hut playing "games" with eachother.

Go with an open mind and you will have fun. If you are a picky person and expect alot, you may be disappointed.
