“Nice Hotel, Fantastic Price”
Reviewed 24 March 2014

Aparently the Hotel has been recently remodeled. The rooms are really nice and confortable. The pool area is also very nice.
The beach is amazing and they are always doing activities over there, so you will have a lot of fun.
The food was just Ok. Dont make me wrong, the quality was good, the problem was the variety.
If your main driver is not the food, I will totally recommend this place. What you get for what you pay is amazing.

This review reaches the areas not covered by others:

* at 14 stories tall, and all other hotels beow palm tree height, this is the tallest on the strip
* it is by far the largest with almost 850 guests
* it only has 4 lifts (each taking 8 people) - do the maths, expect to WAIT A LONG TIME
* it has breakfast and lunch buffets but in the evening there are two other table-service restaurants, both superb
* Canadians, Germans and Russians make up the majority of guests. The middle lot get up before breakfast and put their towels on the sunbeds. Ho hum, just throw them off.
* There is a superb pool which works for kids, adults, the infirm and exercise-swimmers
* the beachside has solid and good shade cover parasols, plus a lounger service
* don't even think about getting on the hop-on-hop-off bus mid morning. It WILL be full.
* staff are very obliging and most all-inclusive packages offer 1.5 litres of bottled water and two beers top-up daily for the minibar. And it is all complimentary!!!
* half the rooms (odd numbered) have a land-view; the even numbered, ALL have a sea view.
* avoid the themed buffets. Have you tried Cuban versions of Chines or Italian food? Don't.

Room Tip: The lift are GROSSLY INADEQUATE. So unless you want a long wait at mealtimes try and get one below f...

We stayed here for a week in mid February, 2014 after spending 3 nights in Havana. We arrived mid-afternoon and were promptly checked in. Our room was on the 8th floor and at the very front of the hotel overlooking the pool and sea - what a wonderful view from a really big balcony!
Our room was large, clean and comfortable. We were treated to towel art and we had our mini-bar replenished daily.
The food in the main buffet restaurant for breakfast and dinner was always fresh with lots of choice and the cooking stations always had something good to offer.
I loved the look and feel of the main bar - with all the vines coming down and the fairy lights covering it - and was a pleasure to relax in after our evening meal, with wonderful service by the really friendly waitresses. The mojito's were delightful and I really struggled deciding between those and the Cubata's (I do have a penchant for dark rum...)
The pool area was well laid out and I liked lazing in the gardens on a hammock, but for me the whole point of coming to Varadero is the beach, and what a beach! The section of beach that the Blau has is wide and pure soft white sand - all the way into the sea. If anything, I would request another row of beach umbrella's at the front as this stretch of beach is so big that it can take it and the shade is sorely needed!
Overall a fantastic holiday and I would highly recommend staying here. My only reason for not returning immediately is the long flight from the UK!
Thank you to all at The Blau.

We stayed for a week all inclusive. After you check in you will be amazed at the main area which contains shops and the main bar. Our room faced the rear overlooking the pool areas and gardens. Rooms were clean and the maids did wonderful creations with the curtains and bed linen. The main restaurant was large buffet style and on the whole the food was good. Sometimes the meats seved were rather tough but there was plenty of choice. All the staff were very helpful and friendly. We could always find sun beds near the pool but you do need to find shady spots which are in the gardens. The beach was lovely and the canopies offered good protection from the sun. You do have to get there by 9am because availability may be limited. There is also a small bar on the beach and one nearby. Our only real complaint was on leaving with our cases. We had to wait ages for a lift and when they did arrive they were always full. However this hotel is well worth a visit.

Room Tip: If you like good views choose the higher rooms athe back

We have just returned from 10 nights at the Blau Varadero, it was a very relaxing holiday, we had a sea view room which was excellent and as we were at the top of the hotel it was lovely and quiet, when we were allocated the 14th floor on arrival, we had some concerns as we had read bad reviews about the lifts, but this didn't seem a problem, just a bit of patience as once the lift was going up or down it would complete the cycle before changing, not a problem. The hotel was clean although the rooms were tired and needed renovating, this didn't detract from the holiday. The site was lovely with a large pool which was well cared for and some lovely green shady areas to lie in when the sun got too hot, the beach was lovely and had our own little area with sun beds and a small bar open on the beach for drinks. Food was plentiful and varied and the service was excellent, Betty who made the smoothies was very friendly and helpful and always smiled and laughed with the customers. The wine was the best we have experienced in an all inclusive hotel. The A la Carte restaurants were 1st class and the quartet extremely talented. We did have to complain about the mexican night, but once we had, the management were on to it immediately and their customer relations person contacted us to see if the problem was solved to our satisfaction and to see if we expected anything else from them, well impressed. The management were evident around the site and this was pleasing to see. The staff were always helpful and couldn't do enough for you. Afternoon tea and biscuits were a nice touch and much appreciated.

Things to consider:
provide adjustable chairs for sitting on the balcony
Consider hand sanitizer when persons enter eating areas like the cruise ships, as its self service buffet style, hands need to be clean.

Room Tip: The higher the better for the amazing view at the back of the hotel.

I have been to many all inclusive resorts and we were very pleased with the Blau. The rooms are clean and lots of space plus service is great and aims to please. Dinner at the international and the Mexican restaurant were both very impressive and the live music is exceptional (people of Cuba are highly talented and culturally advanced). They buffet always had grilled fish and you can easily find what you need with a surprising array of choices. Entertainment at the beach and pool were far less annoying then at a lot of other resorts I've been to in Cuba or Mexico (not sure why some staff person needs to grab the mic. and poorly serenade us in bad harmony with the recorded music... truly puzzling). The piano bar location and music is marvelous. This resort rarely feels crowded except when their 4 elevators were down to 2 (happened a lot when we were there), but take the stairs as you'll end up happier with about your weight gain if you do! The beach is nice and clean and you can walk for miles. I would go back anytime and highly recommend it. Perfect location and a great vacation.
Also, make sure you see the Michael Jackson show, excellent (even if you do NOT like the singer)!
Only negative with Cuba is the smokers are like kids in a candy store, welcome to 1960's. Good news is smoking is not allowed in restaurants and they have non-smoking sections in lounges and bars. It was just surprising to see people wandering around indoors smoking - I guess we are spoiled with our progressive laws about smoking in Canada. Make sure to ask for a non-smoking room, I forgot to (haven't even thought about that request for years).

Room Tip: Ocean view is great if you can, not sure garden would be that bad either if you leave window shut (p...
