It is not the score of the winning game between Germany and Brazil, but the number of times I've been to Cuba, but the first time in Blau Varadero. We have been there for 10 days and generally we are pretty satisfied, but we do have some suggestions. First of all there should be showers on the beach and the life guards should stop hanging by the beach restaurant and start doing their job. Also, the barmaid at the beach restaurant could be a little bit more happy, such as Raydel and Norberto. Once every two days, a hot lunch was organized on the beach, the cooks were really nice and friendly, they made you feel welcomed, and the food was good. There was some activities on the beach such as Volleyball and dancing lessons- thanks to Rosy and Roberto. Funny thing, once the Big Boss arrived from vacation, it seemed that there was more activities than before. The night time shows weren't really good. Roly was the cook in the restaurant next to the beach, and his fish was delicious. He even brought your food to your table, making you feel special. There are also two restaurant A la carte, the Real Palma and the Mexican restaurant. We strongly recommend the Real Palma for their steaks and their varadero shrimps. Thanks to Daylin and Pavel for their awesome service at Real Palma where you can drink some famous 20years old Santiago de Cuba Ron. This rum should be served at the lobby bar and the piano bar. The quality of drinks wasn't really good taking under consideration that it is suppose to be a 4 star hotel. We would like to thank Yazury for her good service at the lobby bar and the quality of her drinks. Some bartenders at the lobby bar should be reminded that their job is to serve tourists instead of talking together. The food overall was good and there was a good variety- thanks to Chef Ivan and his dominicanian partner , except for breakfast. The guy in charge of making eggs and omelets, should make them the way the tourists wants them, not the way he feels like doing it. We talked to Rolando the manager of food and beverages about that matter but it changed nothing. The service at the buffet is really good, we especially liked Armando's service. A big minus of the hotel are the elevators. It is so hot in them and they are really slow. Rooms are quite big but you can see that the supplies are aged. A little refreshment is needed. The maid's service is good when you leave a good tip and acceptable when you don't. You have a big balcony with a view on the ocean from every room. We do recommend this hotel, although at that time of the year (June 25th to July 5th) it was too hot for us. We would also like to thank our tour guide, Tony from Cubancan, for his good explanations during the tour to Havana which we highly recommend.

Room Tip: Rooms that are higher than the 3rd floor

Just got back from 2 weeks at the blau hotel and it was amazing. Couldnt fault anything. Rooms massive and clean. Always a good choice of food in any restaurant. The safe and air conditioning is included in the price. Mini fridge stocked up every day. Entertainment really good. We will definitely be
returning. One word excellent.

This is my second time to Varadero but my first time staying at the Blau. What a great time we had, the staff couldn't do enough for you and were very friendly. Food was good and we took advantage of the two al a carte restaurant's over our two week stay. No problem getting served at the bar, brand names available when requested. The room was spacious and our maid ensured our room was spotless. The manager Jose was always walking about making sure things were running smoothly. will certainly be going back!

Fast forwarding to my last day (and yes, i wanted to start this way) I noticed some make up work undergoing right on the facade of the main building. It's a good thing: the edifice really needed it.
Now, let's talk "Blau". Forget about the dated looks, about the here and there minor blemishes. What makes this facility stand out is the personnel. Those are the stars of the show, the ones that eventually will make you book this hotel in the near future.
Upon my arrival I was greeted with a lighting fast checking-in process after driving on those unforgiven cuban roads for like 2 hours, from Havana international Airport to Varadero. Oh, how I appreciated that! I was given room 708, facing the pool and the ocean. let me tell you that the view is breathtaking. Well, the room is not quite brand new,and had a little mold odor, but it was impecable clean and tremendously spacious.
The inside of this huge pyramid-like structure is really pretty. On each floor there are spectacular green vines overhanging and making their way down resembling a green waterfall that is quite original. The lobby bar is beautiful. Go there. Have any of the bartenders make you a cocktail, pour a beer, or just hang out and talk to them. They are so down to earth. Nothing fake about them. They are smart and funny, and always with a natural smile that's kind of hard to find around. Ask for Elyanis, Javier or Yoannis and you'll see what I'm talking about.
Dinning options are sufficient. It's a 4 stars hotel therefore you don't get 7 or 10 themed restaurants. I knew of a mexican, international, and a on-the-grill. Of all the aforementioned, i just when to the international food one, AKA Palma Real. It was really good. For this I gotta thank F&B manager Mario Duarte. This guy is really nice, easy going, and quite accessible. It all started with a friendly rivalry between him, being a Real Madrid FC fan, and my family; hard core Barcelona FC followers. From that moment on, it was always the teasing and jokes about both teams (he is very knowledgeable of La Liga). Well, due to the fact that we were there for just 4 nights, we couldn't book the restaurant I wanted. So Mario arranged the booking for my entire family, not only once but twice.
Having dined for two nights in a row at Palma Real was really good. They serve a shrimp cocktail that rival whoever and they have a great selection of spanish wines (extra fee $). I'd recommend the steak, that as of cuban standards, is the the best on the island.
I'd like to mention the special attention that Rolando (F&B) and Anselmo (main chef) pay to the details on all the dining places. Both combined with Mario form a trio that'd make any hotel move from low to high in a heart beat.
Our family also frequently dined at the buffet. It's good with stations for all tastes. And then again all the servers were all smiles and provided us adequately.
The pool is huge, really big. Before entering, pass by the club house and say hi to Barbarito, the cabana man. He is always smiling and talking to you like being best friends for years.
The beach is rely nice, with the turquoise waters and fine sand. The first night (july 4th) they throw a party right on the beach that was awesome. Too bad it was over at 1 a.m. They should make it longer. We all moved to the restaurant by the beach to keep on going. Unfortunately, the beach party was only one day. I wonder if they plan it like that or...
Well, this is my experience at Blau. I met beautiful people there from Canada and I had a good time.

Great value for money at Blau Varadero! Spent a fantastic two weeks here. The staff couldn't do enough for you. Rooms were clean & spacious.

The only issue are the lifts, can take an age. Although after all the food & mojitos, taking the stairs made me feel better about myself.

Beautiful country!!

What a beautiful country!

Having arrived after three nights in Havana, we found Varadero and the Blau such a welcome contrast. The area says little or nothing about Cuba because this is a resort for tourist eyes only -- you could be anywhere on the planet. However, the hotel looks impressive with its huge atrium dripping with tropical plants and the friendly staff do their utmost to make you welcome. We had issues in our room with the plumbing but these were quickly rectified. For me, the real plusses are the wonderful pool area and, beyond that, a beach to die for, with its long stretch of white sand and an ocean so warm that it felt like taking a bath. And given the daily temperatures well over 30 Celsius in June and July, you will want to take a dip quite often, believe me ! The buffet dinner in the evening can be a little unexciting, so take the opportunity to visit the two a la carte restaurants at least once, because this is part of the "all-inclusive" deal and won't cost you. And worry not, you won't go hungry or thirsty ! Please tip the staff generously as they deserve it and they rely heavily on it. All in all, a good, value-for-money holiday, but we're glad we saw Havana for a taste of the real Cuba.

Room Tip: Definitely a room overlooking the pool and the beach would be best. High up is good, but be prepared...
