On a very recent trip to Curacao my husband and I spent an afternoon at Playa Porto Marie. We had heard from fellow guests at our townhome complex that it was lovely, and we were trying to snorkel at a number of different beaches. It is an extremely bumpy ride in from the main road on a dreadful road, but once there, it is a lovely facility with washroom facilities, a very nice beachfront restaurant where we enjoyed a cold beer and good lunch. The beach is very pretty with white sand, which is not easily found on many beaches at this end of the island. However, while the snorkelling was okay, it was far from the best we experienced on the island (Playa Lagun and Playa Kenepa Chiki had better snorkelling in our opinion). That said, we saw a number of fish, but we have had far better snorkelling in other countries and even in Curacao. There is secure parking at this location, and we did not pay for our stay as we did not spend any time on the beach or get a lounger. We sat up near the restaurant to dry off for 10 minutes when we came out of the water, but that was it.
Truthfully, we found this particular beach to be very touristy, and what finally drove us away was that we were listening to John Denver, Engelbert Humperdink, etc. music, and I could have been on any US party beach. Personally, we far prefer a more local flavour, and as we were not spending time lying on the beach in the sand, we headed back to our quiet, beautiful town home to end our day. It is a very beautiful beach to look at, and the facilities are good, so decide what you are looking for in a day at the beach and go from there.
