“Very good hotel, spectacular staff”
Reviewed 2 October 2013

We stayed at the Renaissance Curacao for 12 nights in Oct 2013 to celebrate our wedding anniversary.

While the room we initially booked was nice and acceptable for the price, we worked with a front desk manager to upgrade (not for free, but for a very fair price) to a very nice suite, which I recommend if you want to have a little room to stretch out.

One of the highlights of the hotel is a beach-like infinity pool. It's on the second floor of the hotel overlooking the ocean. The area in front of the "pool" is sand, and the bottom of the pool is sand, and the water is heated ocean water. And the view is over the ocean, so with the infinity style you can really feel like you're at the beach despite that part of the island's ocean really being for boat traffic (commercial and cruise.)

Hotel restaurant is OK and buffet breakfast is acceptable but overpriced.

Great location with its own shops and just about a 2-3 minute walk to the Queen Emma Bridge. (It's on the Otrabanda side, not the Punda side.)

Starbucks on 2nd floor is big and nice, with good and free WiFi.

But the main highlight for me was the staff. Every single staff member was friendly, polite, and helpful. There was never a question (other than "can you pick us up at the airport?") where the answer was no. And people even remembered our names and greeted us by name when we walked in, something I've only experienced before at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok.

I recommend calling the hotel directly to try to work out a decent deal. Although they actually have good deals on their web site, working directly with the reservations dept at the hotel can get you a slightly better deal, such as including the breakfast buffet for a price lower than it would otherwise be.

The casino is small but good enough, with quite a few slot machines and table games including roulette, blackjack, and 3-card poker. (Blackjack rules require dealer to hit soft 17 which is bad for the player.)

Would gladly return to this hotel...as much because of the people as anything else.

Room Tip: Try to talk to a manager to get a great deal on an "Imperial Suite" or junior suite, and m...

+ nice rooms, convenient, good quality of beds, clean. Good American standard/ little charm
+ good location, close to Rif, downtown and cruise boats pier
+ friendly service
+ highlight for me is the pool with the artificial beach. Very nice

- no wifi in rooms or at pool, only in lobby and at Starbucks in hotel
- food and bar in hotel is overpriced and nothing interesting

For a downtown hotel it is convenient and nicely located. Lacking wifi was for me the biggest issue, that resolved I would go back

The location is excellent for those choosing not to rent a car. Alot of shops, plus to the left of the front entrance of the hotel, you have the Fort. This old fort was converted into shops and restraunts.

First let me start you off about the taxi rate. When I looked online, both the hotel and everyone else stated that cab fare would be $25. When we asked the cab driver, he said it was $30. On the ride back to the airport, it was $35. I wasnt going to argue so we just paid what they asked.

Once you get to the hotel, Jennifer checked us in and while our room was an interior room that overlooked a conference room, it served its purpose and I have no complaints. Comfy beds, air conditioner worked very well, maid staff did a good job in cleaning and restocking towels, etc.

The buffet restraunt (next to check in) was a good price for lunch. Dinner, i thought it was overpriced. Regarding the 15% that is added onto your bill, the server said the gratuity was for everyone in the hotel. I asked a friend of mine that lives on the island and said the 15% tip was for all the waitstaff. If you received fantastic service, it's best to tip with cash on the side. We used this method in our future outings.

The casino was larger than what i thought. Just be aware that you cannot wear any caps after 7pm. We had one of the security guards upset my traveling buddy, but it was handled by management in a fast and prompt manner. Fred (MGR) was excellent in our concerns and what impressed me is that he had this resolved within the hour.

Just outisde the Fort area, you will see a floating bridge that you can walk to Punda. Alot of shops, restraunts, and places to see. Since all this was in walking distance from the hotel, it was perfect.

There was a restraunt right before you get to the Fort area called CRU. They had a $20 exectutive lunch that included salad, beef steak, and a side. This totally exceeded my expectations and that was our best meal on the island.

The man-made beach on the second floor was amazing. Bianca, our sever, was fun and she really enjoys working there. Also on the second floor, they have a Star Bucks. From they lobby, the wireless connection was intermittant from the first floor, but no issues connecting while we were inside the shop.

Overall, the people are friendly and go out of their way to ensure you have a good time.

Pros:
-The staff was absolutely great. Between helping us plot out directions around the island on our map to providing great restaurant recommendations, the staff was incredibly helpful and friendly. Also, I reported one minor issue with the room shortly after I arrived. Not only was it fixed by the time I got home from dinner, the next day I found a complimentary fruit tray in my room with an apology note. Just a GREAT staff.
-Rooms are relatively large and very nice. Comfortable bed, nice bathroom...no complaints.
-The infinity pool feels as close to a regular beach as it can, and I never had a problem finding a beach chair.
-Location is also very good basically attached to the Rif Fort. The Rif Fort has some decent restaurants and is a very short walk to the more populated section of downtown Willemstad.

Cons (not easy to identify at this hotel)
-No free wifi in the rooms (free in the lobby and Starbucks, though)
-No actual beach at the hotel (again, infinity pool is a good substitute, but there is a difference)
-Faint smell of smoke permeates the portion of the lobby that is closest to the casino

Really nice hotel this - excellent staff, good bar, great location, lovely room - everything just worked.

Located just over the moving bridge from the old town, so it's a really lovely walk into town.

The Infinity pool is amazing - and it has a bar next to it. You can watch the cruise ships that pull up next door, and see into the main harbour.

I arrived early and they had a room for me, and i left at 4am which they were also really helpful with.

About 15 minutes from the Airport.

The room was very nice, we had a view on the ocean and could see the cruise ships come in. This hotel charges for Wi-Fi, however they have a Starbucks on the second floor and WI-Fi is free there, also the Starbucks across the street provides free Wi-Fi. Breakfast in the hotel was good, however pricey. We had a small breakfast at Starbucks and spend our money for dinner elsewhere instead. You can hang out in the infinity pool and watch people coming from the cruise ship. They serve great cocktails and food at the infinity pool/beach as well. very relaxing. This hotel does have a Casino and some nights they have a band that plays in the hotel lobby. They do give you a free $10 gamble card for the casino. They also have a car service on the second floor for rentals and they have a lady that helps you with any kind of information needed for restaurants, sight seeing etc. This hotel is at a great location as well, right outside the hotel are plenty of restaurants, shops etc.

Jennefer at the front desk went out of her way to accommodate my honey and I with a beautiful room with a balcony. The area the room was located overlooked the ball park. Nice, quite and very peaceful. The room was big and the balcony got used and abused. We sat most of the evening there just chatting and planning what we would do the next morning before we had to leave the Island. We had breakfast in bed(sorta) the waiter was very friendly and smiled alot. We went shopping while it drizzled a little and headed out to the airport.
One more thing before I leave Hertz car rental owner Lucki was very accommodating with a last minute car rental. The car was great and we just wanted to thank you. The prize really good and the lady that checked us in for the rental car was a doll. Very professional.
One more person I would like to add with his great service is the Big guy at the steak and ribs place at the fort REILIGHSON you were awesome thanks for the recommendation and the quick service restaurant owner should actually have more people like you You were great.
Thank you all for having made our one day stay there awesome. See you soon.
