I have seen many caves in many different parts of the world. This one ranks among the most interesting in terms of variety of formations, and history. Out guide had a great sense of humor as well as being knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and informative. Be aware, however, that access is up a relatively steep staircase, the inside of the cave will be humid and hot because air does not circulate freely even though there are some fans at strategic places. You will also see some fruit bats--harmless of course. Still, definitely worth the time and money.

One of our ports of call on our recent Caribbean cruise was Curacao and we went on an excursion that took us to Hato Caves. There are 50 steps to get up to the caves - yes, up as the caves are above ground. The temperature in the caves in hot and humid, there are fans placed around the area to help cool you down somewhat. There are bats in the caves but don't worry they don't bite. :) They do not permit you to take pictures in the caves citing the flash will damage the formations and also the flash will hurt the bats. What I didn't understand is why we were not permitted to use our camcorders as there is no flash on those. They turn the lights off briefly so you can see how dark it is in the caves. For those that could not walk up the stairs there is a restaurant where you can wait for the group to return. Overall this was an average tour and attraction.

Five of my friends and I cruised aboard the Crown Princess, from Miami to Aruba, and ported for a day in Curacao. We all signed up for the Willemstad Walking Tour and Hato Caves, and were very happy we did! Although we expected the temperature to be cool in the caves, we were surprised to find it warm and humid. The bats didn't seem to mind though! To protect the resident bats, photos are restricted to areas of the cave where natural light illuminates the caves. Following the cave tour, Lucette narrated our walking tour through Willemstad, pointing out landmarks and educating us on Curacao's history and present day economy, etc. We enjoyed the tour and appreciated the air conditioned bus! One note, the cave tour did involve navigating 49 steps (up and down) and some narrow pathways through the caves.

The Hato Caves are amazing. There are 50 steps that you need to climb and is a fairly easy climb going up but coming down you need to watch where you step. Several people wore flips but we wore tennis shoes. There were puddles of water inside the caves and it was easier to walk with the tennis shoes. The guide was very knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. Every aspect of the cave was interesting and this was a fun tour. We also saw other sights around Curacao and had time to walk around the city prior to the tour. This is a beautiful island, very polite people and a fun place to walk around in.

The trip around Hato cave was a nice end to our trip to
Curacao. It is only 5 minutes from the airport so was a good place to stop before departing.
