Owner description: The Western Hemisphere's oldest synagogue in continuous use was founded in 1651 by 12 families from Amsterdam.

The synagogue and its museum are a must for history travelers. The museum describes the history of and the contemporary Jewish community in Curacao, with objects--some 700 years old--from the community. The synagogue itself is a huge beautiful structure, quite peaceful inside.

The synagogue may look small, but is ancient in Caribbean terms. It is not always open, but certainly worth the effort of a visit..

Beautiful synagogue with self-guided walking tour. Decent security--the guard was also the ticket taker. Pretty mandatory $10 per person to walk through. Gorgeous old wood and brass chandeliers. Great place for a destination wedding! Wish I'd asked if anyone still used the Mikvah-was very interesting and small, with no steps. Must have used a ladder!

We enjoyed our visit to the oldest continually in use synagogue in the New World. The entrance fee helps to preserve the history and architecture of a culture. A beautiful quiet place to meditate.

Our first time in Curaçao, we toured the museum and sanctuary, which was truly a worthwhile experience. And when we planned our second trip, we made sure we could attend services. I'm so glad we did, even though we were only able to attend Friday night....what a moving and spiritual experience to worship with people from other cultures!! Dress is casual, but note that men need to wear long pants and women need their shoulders covered.
