Hilton Curacao
Ranked #16 of 32 Hotels in Willemstad
Reviewed 14 January 2014

We arrived on Christmas day and stayed three nights. My satisfaction started out high but steadily declined over the course of our stay. The staff at the front desk were friendly, and the amenities on site were nice: small but nice beach, seating and lounging areas all over (included some more secluded and away from the hubbub), pools, mini-golf, tennis, gym, snack shop.

It also seems to be in a nice location on the island. There is another small resort next door, but the shore is not crowded with buildings. It's quite lovely. And just a few minutes by car from downtown Willemstad. (I believe the hotel also has an infrequent shuttle to town, but we didn't use it and so don't know any details.)

We stayed in an Executive Room on the 5th floor with a balcony facing the water. The room was nice, clean--nothing spectacular (except for the view). We used Hilton points because the prices were so high over Christmas week; they seem more reasonable at other times of the year.

So for the downsides: Both hot tubs were closed. We called the front desk to ask if they could be opened and were told to talk to the people at the gym; we called the gym, who told us to call the front desk and promptly hung up on me before I could get a word out. When we took a closer look, it appeared that they hadn't been cleaned or operational in months. So we gave up.

The Executive Lounge (which was a "perk" of staying in an Executive Room) left much to be desired. While the lounges at many other Hiltons have snacks much of the day for guests, we were lucky to find drinks available whenever we went looking here. The breakfast was weak--the first day they didn't even have milk until 15-20 minutes after breakfast was available.

Our biggest complaint, however, was the nightly "entertainment." The first night was a band or party of some sort, second was karaoke, and the third was another band. We were not expecting to be treated to a club atmosphere when we booked the hotel. Although the view from our room was lovely, it also meant we were right above the spot where all of this occurred. Luckily, they stopped by 10:00 each night, but it was still intrusive and did not make for a pleasant stay for us. I don't know if it was just because we were there over the holidays or if this is what it's always like. Just be aware that you may want to find out, if it's something that would bother you.

I should also note that this was our first time on Curacao, so I don't have any other experiences to compare with this.

This hotel is not very well updated. Supposedly they had recently remodeled it but I didn't see the value. It does have good beach access. We booked 4 nights but only stayed 1 - then moved next door to the Marriott.

The hotel does not look too good from the outside and from the inside. It looks like it was not renovated for 20 years. The good thing is that there is a private hotel beach and staff is really friendly.

For those that like to stay with the Brand, you could be disappointed by this Hotel.

Service

There were some particularly helpful staff, (particularly at reception , the lady cooking eggs at breakfast), and conversely some staff that obviously would be better employed in an enterprise which is less service orientated.

We did book through Sunwing who were very good in resolving issues and we were most pleased with their rep- Etienne.

Some Issues

Rooms being made up late (as late as 5.20pm) after a number of requests, which we assume may have been due to insufficient staff.

No towels left in room, had to call for them more than once.

No coffee and tea left in room, had to call for this more than once.

No toiletries being left in room.

TV timed out by itself - even thought self timer was in off mode.

Entrance Door closed, but could be pushed open from the outside when supposedly locked- this was resolved by maintenance after Sunwing took this up with management.

Advertised shuttle to town we found was limited to 11 guests and limited to around fours hours. Also you are required to reserve your seat, so no spontaneous trips! We were not told of these arrangements prior to booking and ended up using taxis at US 15 each way to follow through on our plans. We were told that the shuttle was full one day and after taking a taxi met the shuttle at the drop off point- only five guests disembarked!

The room we were told was a "refurbished" room. It was partially refurbished and not quite finished off to meet expectations of a Hilton user, the bathroom door was old and rotten at the bottom, old door handle etc. the door had previously been fitted with a coat hook, only the holes remained, there was an old door stop fitted on the door which would have prevented the door hitting the bath( which is no longer there). The bathroom , although pleasant and clearly recently refurbish was not quite finished off. A 1 1/2- 2 inch band of caulking or similar instead of a trim edge between door and tiling. Also there was damage ( a chunk missing in the leading edge) to the new glass shower door which although still functioning, did not fit with the Hilton image.
The in room safe although also functioning was old and number blisters were punctured and numbers worn off etc.
For a really small amount of work and money the room could be finished to a very acceptable standard. This would take the room from average to good.

On a more positive note, the colours chosen were bright and modern and the room decor was pleasant and had been well thought out . The corridors had the same turquoise and white theme which met decor expectations.

Mechanical Services

The air conditioning was very effective, the shower had enough heat but water pressure was not what we are used to- the island has only desalinated water( you will not be encouraged to waste water on Curacao).

Elevators were modern, glass sided with views to the ocean.

Food and beverages

The breakfasts were average with limited fresh fruit ,yoghurt, oatmeal, pancakes, cereals, pastries, cold meats and cheeses. Eggs to order, scrambled eggs bacon and sausage. Occasional side dishes added.Birds walk around the counters as the restaurant is open and no efforts are made to dissuade these intruders. There are also lots of flies so be prepared to defend your food!

Bar Snacks, two burgers were US $ 43. draft beer 2 plastic cups $10.

Although the Hilton did struggle to deliver satisfaction, special nights are better value. BBQ on beach night US S85 for two. Good selection of salads good selection of BBQ meats, and numerous sweets ( cheese cake etc).

It is the first Hilton I have stayed at where I have been told "we don't have" to simple several requests . draft beer - out of gas , no brandy etc.

Two restaurants in reasonable walking distance, the Indonesian Temple Doeloe and Sjalotte. We ate a basic fish dish at the former for US$46 for 2. The later had a fixed menu at $140 for 2 so we passed.

Beaches

Hilton has a small beach cove and a larger beach that runs on to the Marriott beach area, there are dive shops on the beach at both hotels. Water is clear and good for scuba and diving with many fish. There are stones, coral, rocks etc in the water so you have the footwear pack it. There are no long beach walks as there is preventative fencing at the end of the Marriott which adjoins a very public each.

There is a road along the waters edge running towards town that is very quiet and frequented by the occasional runner. Although we walked this I would not recommend it due to the isolation. Although we are told the island is safe we passed a row of houses when walking back to the hotel on the main road with razor wire fencing, burglar bars on all windows and doors and guard dogs at each house. The residents may not feel 'safe'.

Very little else to do except visit the casino which is part of the Hotel. We did take an island tour $110 for a couple which was organized through Sunwing. This took in the west part of the Island. We took another tour of the east island for only $30 a couple which took in, the Curacao liquor factory, Jan Thiel area and Seaworld beach area etc. This was booked in town by the end of the bridge.

Impression

This Hotel is not trying to achieve better status. This is a beach hotel which is not realizing its potential.

Staff training is required, the servers gave the impression their thoughts were 'don't bother me' or 'take it or leave it'. At times I was just ignored.

Quality control in all departments is required.

I would suggest that there is a senior housekeeper that reviews all rooms on completion of daily makeup to see all is in place.

The shuttle is insufficient to guarantee a guest can use it as part of a trip plan. Therefore improve it or drop it. Why disappoint?

Food and beverage needs spicing up.simple inexpensive snacks? daily beach barbeques? Catering to the Dutch maybe, the specialty pasta restaurant is not going to encourage visitors from much of the world.

I have stayed at this hotel on numerous occasions since 2002 as I travel to Curacao on business quite often. The hotel has had it's ups and downs over the years but the staff are always friendly. The rooms have all been refurbished and are in good condition although there are a few rough edges. We stayed on the 5th (executive) floor with an ocean view. The first thing we noticed was that the prices in the bars and restaurants have taken a real hike. The corner shop (which used to sell food and drinks items at reasonable prices has been converted into a "coffee bar". I purchased two bottles of water on the night we arrived for $5.00 each. A small beer (Amstel Bright) will set you back $7.50 at the bars. A Hilton Burger is now $20 plus (used to be $14). The result is that Bligh's Bar is now pretty dead. We ate a meal at Ciello's (supposed to be Italian food) this was a complete disaster and we ended up with a bill for over $150. This was the one an only time that we tried to eat at one of the restaurants. My wife did complain to the waiter about her entrée but there was no compensation for what was a very poor dish. The beaches used to be raked clean every night ready for the following morning. Now there is a half-hearted attempt to rake the beach directly in front of the hotel (the sun beds are not moved) starting at about 8:00 am. Numerous cigarette butts remain plus litter under the sun beds. The beach along the outside of the health club does not get cleaned anymore and is even worse. We ended up renting a car and shopping for food and alcohol at the local supermarkets and also ate out occasionally. All in all they have priced themselves out of business.

The grounds & beaches were nice, the executive lounge staff went above and beyond, but the black mold in the A/C vents was a smelly vacation bummer. You'll smell mold as soon as you enter the elevators from the lobby. The front desk was notified twice about the mold in the A/C vents and that the A/C wouldn't turn off. They didn't do anything to resolve the issue and didn't communicate anything to us. It was my birthday trip and didn't want to let this ruin my time. I cleaned the mold as much as I could, and wedged towels in the vents which remained for our entire 6 night stay... We figured the entire building had a mold problem so there was no sense in changing rooms. The drain in the shower didn't work properly. We had to have that fixed three times... They just finished a remodel, but didn't take care of a big underlying issue: MOLD in the ducts! We didn't spend much time inside the hotel because of this. We didn't realize how bad the mold smell was until we got home and did our laundry. Our clothes were so saturated with the smell, it took 5 washes to get the smell out (and I use Tide). Our luggage still smells like mold and it's been 'airing' out in the garage for over a month. I won't be staying there ever again.

Room Tip: If it weren't for the mold issue the vacation would have been spectacular. When they resolve it...

I booked the Hilton in September so my wife & I could have an executive floor, oceanfront remodeled room over the Christmas holidays. I am, like many reviewers, a Diamond HHonors person & after reading so many negative reviews, I was concerned about our stay. We arrived around 10:30 AM on the 23rd & I was prepared to wait for our room to be readied. The lady at the front desk treated us like royalty. Because of the Diamond status, she moved our room prep to the top of the list & arranged for our eating breakfast at the Aqua breakfast buffet. By the time we finished our breakfast, our room was ready. Our room was remodeled & had a great executive-level 5th floor balcony view of the beach & pool areas. However, the first time my wife took a shower, we found out that the sliding glass door in the shower would not shut completely. Actually, it wasn't even close. It had a 2 inch gap between the wall & the completely closed door. Hilton standards, no, but a minor even humorous situation. How a subcontractor could get away with something like that is amazing. As we continued to interact with the staff, everyone was friendly & responsive to our needs even more so at some of the Hiltons that have Hilton "standards".
Food - We typically do not eat dinner at hotels so we cannot comment on the restaurants with a couple of exceptions. We ate lunch by the pool & the hamburgers & fries were great. The ladies behind the bar were friendly & responsive. We also ate at the Christmas night barbeque event in the sandy area by the main pool. It was very relaxing & a great night to have Christmas in the Caribbean. Again, the service was great, almost too much attention. The dinner had a great three person band mixing Christmas, Latin & contemporary music. Food was okay for a BBQ.
The executive lounge for both the breakfast & afternoon cocktails time was overwhelmed. Too many people in a small area. The lady staff were very diligent in getting drinks & refilling the food, but it was just hard to keep up with the crowd. The outside bar was always packed, but we managed to get wine & cocktails on a timely basis.
The beach & the pool area were perfect since we could get lounges, drinks & anything else we needed close to pretty, clear water.
Overall, we enjoyed our stay at the Hilton. Was it the best Hilton facility we have been to. no, but with the friendliness of the staff & the outdoor setting, it was a relaxed & enjoyable experience. On our last afternoon, the hotel ran out of strawberry dacquiri(?) mix so we knew it was time to leave.

Room Tip: It is worth the added cost to get a remodeled, executive floor oceanfront room. Our room was next t...
