“Fantastic floris”
Reviewed 17 June 2012

My daughter and I recently celebrated her 30th birthday on Bonaire and Curaçao. And Floris Suites was not our first choice; we originally booked into another place closer to Willemstad. SO happy we changed! The staff was very friendly and engaging. The bartender, Howard, was a star making us feel like family. Our room overlooked the pool-which was lovely- but was extremely quiet. We like to cook and the kitchen was completely accommodated. The decor and atmosphere throughout was charming. Although we didn't use it, there's a shuttle to town and the beach. We didn't use the beach either so I can't comment on that. There are so may beautiful beaches on the island if you have a car, they are easy to explore. I would highly recommend this hotel and, if I ever get to go back, I'd definitely stay here at the Floris Suites!

My wife and I stayed at the Floris for 10 nights.
There were some things we really liked about it, and some we really didnt.

So here goes:

The Good:
The lobby is beautiful. They have apples out for their customers to take as needed, and cold water. The pool is nice, although it seems the trees around it drop a lot of junk in there that doesn't get filtered out real well. Not sure if they can do anything about that. No big deal though. The ground and gardens at the Floris are really beautiful. Very nice environment.
As for the room, it had granite counter-tops, nice built-in closets, fridge, etc. Nice soft pillows and mattress. In room safe. I liked the proximity key cards they have. Much better than the standard slide it in the slot 6 times before the light turns green keycard setups.
They also have a shuttle van that runs into Willemstad twice a day. 9 and 4. If you dont have a rental (dont mess up your reservation like me and not get a car), it will save you $15 each way in cab fare.
The front desk has towels to take with you to the beach or pool. That is handy, and they dont bother you about your room number and keeping track of how many you take out and return.
The Floris doesnt have a beach, but the Pirate Bay (5 minute walk) has a private beach they let Floris guests use for free (works great for them cause then you buy their food and drinks). It is a nice beach, with lots of shady areas. Or you could sneak over to the Hilton or Marriott beaches and pool like a lot of people did.

The Bad:
Pop question: How many times should you change the sheets for customers staying for 10 nights? What do you think? I think it should be more than ZERO times.
If you stay at the Floris, and you think you'll just go grab the breakfast buffet, be warned. It will set you back $40/couple.
The room needed painted. It wasnt terrible or anything, but a few too many squashed bugs on the walls and chipped corners.
The shower needs a good scrubbing. There is mildew around the sides where you dont walk. I understand they are hard to clean, but someone probably should.
The toilet seat was horribly stained. Time to replace it.
The bed was a little rickety and therefore noisy. I'll spare you the details. :)

Summary,
The Floris has a lot going for it, but they really need to work on their cleaning staff, to get things cleaner. And do a little more maintenance. Toilet seats are cheap. Paint is reasonable. Take care of those things and I'd be pretty happy with the place.

Dear DrummerDave,

Thank you for your review.
We are glad you liked the room, Pool area and lobby.
We have changed the way we serve the breakfast. Now one can enjoy breakfast in our fine dining restaurant Sjalotte starting at $10 pp. The sheets are changed every other day. Towels daily. Our apologies if that standard was not followed during your stay.
All rooms and bathrooms have been refreshed and re-painted.
We certainly hope you will return to us so that we can show you the upgrades we have made.

Floris Suites is very conveniently located less than a ten-minute drive from Otrabanda. The rooms are gigantic and I believe the bed was a California king. Plus the living room/kitchen and a small patio with table/chairs (ours backed right up to the pool). The staff was inviting and friendly and the place seemed pretty quiet, with a few families and couples staying there. Lots of lizards and birds to find if you walked around the grounds a bit. The pool was open 24 hours and lit very nicely at night. Only issue was that construction was ongoing, but only started around 9 in the morning while we were there so not a big deal for us since we were up before that and out for most of the noise. Pool bar had good drinks at standard high-ish prices. It's not a beachside resort as it's a ten-minute non-scenic walk to the beach across the street, but it seemed nice enough when we walked there and we spent most of our time at beaches elsewhere. It's a great value for what we spent for the room!

The Floris had a foyer with two large closets, a good sized bedroom with king-sized bed, full kitchen, bath, living/dining room, and a large balcony. And it was all for less than $100 per night. And did I mention that there was a plasma TV in the bedroom and another one in the living room. The staff was very pleasant. The grounds were extremely beautiful with every color flower you can imagine. The beach was gorgeous and never crowded. A nice convenience store was on the property (good because there weren't any others nearby.) The shuttle went to the beach but I didn't see anybody using it to avoid the 10 minute walk to the beach. The shuttle (9:00am and 4:00pm) was used by guests going downtown. Once, the van was full and the driver returned (rather quickly) to take us downtown. We always walked back to the hotel (about 2.5 miles) and we were rewarded by seeing the biggest iguana I have ever seen. Little lizards and cute, little, yellow birds were everywhere. We were the only Americans I met at the Floris. Most guests were from the Netherlands. A great value and a great stay!

Room Tip: We had a second floor room, which the Europeans call the first floor (the first floor is called the...

Friendly and helpful staff (thanks to Flor Marie and the rest of the front desk staff for birthday arrangements including a cake that magically appeared in our room) who made us feel at home. Great to have a kitchen, tons of room (Royal Garden Suite, #33), private deck, lovely and uncrowded pool to refresh in the afternoons. Hip and happening place, yet remarkable quiet in the rooms. Wifi was an excellent perk, as were the plentiful beach/pool towels, and the Friday afternoon (1800-1900) happy hour for guests. Sjalotte, the onsite restaurant, was a lovely setting to look at, and turned out to be the place for the finest meal of our 10 days on the island.

Floris' location is really well-placed for a quick trip into Willemstad (5 minutes to drive and park on the Otrabanda, then head over to Punda via bridge/ferry), pop up the beaches (try Laguna, Kokomo, Grote Knip, Cas Abao) up the coast (we highly recommend NOT going SE of Punda), supermarket nearby. Beach wasn't so close, but we really wanted to be more out of the way (i.e., away from town), so that didn't matter to us.

Great stay at a mellow and right-sized hotel. Pampering like a big place with a small hotel feel. We kept feeling so lucky that we had chosen so well.

Room Tip: We were in room #33, which is an "end" room. Problem with that is the side door from the...

We staid 2 nights in the Floris Suite hotel which was good. It is a small scale hotel with generally friendly staff. We booked 2 junior suite pool rooms but on arrival we received 1 suite pool which was upgraded to a bigger suite and 1 garden. As we booked at the hotel website directly and have had received confirmation the hotel could not do anything else than admit a mistake, although they tried! Only after long discussion we received a small discount for this. On check-out a we were expected to pay almost 100 usd for both rooms together as extra charge for the room cleaning! When I questioned this I received an answer that this is normal in all hotels in the world...by accident I am a diamond member at the Hyatt and friendly told told the lady I stay very frequent in hotels for business and never ever I have seen a charge like this, my comments were laughed away. Don't get me wrong, I know cleaning staff is often underpaid and hence I leave often a cash tip for them. All with all the hipol is nice but expect to pay unexpected charges! There are many better value for money hotels on Curacao.

Dear EdwindG,

Thank you for your review. We feel that there might be some confusion on what happens to be Tax and service charges. All our rates, like all other hotels are rates without tax and service charge. Our reservation system also mentions this clearly at time of booking. We are glad you liked the hotel and found the staff friendy. Floris Suite Hotel offers a very high value for money that one does not easily find anywhere else. We certainly hope to welcome you back one day.
