“AWESOME!!!!”
Reviewed 29 September 2013

My name is Kelly Clingerman my husband Brett and I spent 10 wonderful days and nights at the Sunscape. We were there on our delayed honeymoon and while there we also renewed our vows. The staff was fantastic from the word go. Nancy the HR and FNB Manager escorted us to our room in #8. She was so pleasant and eager to help us. Anytime we saw her on the property she went out of her way to speak with us and make sure that all was going well. On our last day there she was doing her travels and made her way to the beach to see us before we left. Any time we went to the front desk to ask for assistance with something they were always helpful. The food was totally awesome at the all of the restaurants with the Italian restaurant being my least favorite. Italian is hard to do when you aren't Italian. The beach butlers Laura and Angela were totally awesome!!! Norma the bartender at the Oceana was a dream and all the other staff were amazing. Zjanina, the wedding planner and her staff were so helpful and made our day so special. We renewed our vows on the resort and the staff provided a wonderful and memorable experience for us. If I had one negative about our whole trip it would be that the ATM outside of the lobby doesn't communicate with US banks. Everyday and night was like a dream. We are going back in June of 2014 and taking our two kids along with my sister and brother in law and neice. If you are nice and treat the staff like they are humans you will have an excellent experience. We did tip on occasion but I think just interacting with the staff created our awesome experience!!

Just got back from our Honeymoon, we stayed 11 nights from September 10th - September 21st 2013. Room 8219.

This is a very nice resort. It is a value somewhere between 3 and 4 stars and is priced appropriately. If your easy an easy going, there to relax and have a good time and generally laid back person then you will have a lot of fun! We did and are glad we booked our honeymoon there :-).

If you are nit picky and expect to be waited in hand and foot and think it is the ritz or the capital grille, then go elsewhere. We looked at other islands and resorts and the Ritz type resorts, although I'm sure are very nice, were going to cost us a lot more.

The key is, be nice, be friendly, be outgoing say hello and please/ thank you to the staff who for the most part are very nice people. Also, although not required we tipped for good service. Maybe $2 for dinner waiter service, a $1 to the bartenders (not every round but maybe every other or every third round). After doing this for a few days we were treated like kings and queens and we tipped maybe $10 a day! Well worth it!

Tip if you email them ahead if time and tell them it is your honeymoon or anniversary (copy of marriage certificate required they asked at check in) then they throw in a free massage and a dinner in the beach one night with a private waiter, very nice touch.

Here's the good. Lots of choices for food and drinks.

The Buffett is open for all three meals. Then there are 4 restaurants (in addition to the Buffett) that are open for dinner. 2 of these restaurants are also open for lunch. Also there is a coffee shop in the lobby with coffee hot and iced and lattes and cappuccino as well as donuts and pastry open 8 am - 10 pm. Coffee shop is included in all inclusive.

Liquor drinks are good. Just be nice, say please/thank you. Ask for 2 at a time if you like and they are happy to accommodate. In general all bartenders were good or better!

The pools are very nice. The pool bar was open from 11ish - 5ish everyday we were there so that was great.

The beach on the resort is awesome! Yes in some areas it is all sand and in some areas very rocky, but the island is formed from volcanic rock , so just wear some water shoes or sandles or just walk the 50 yards to the sandy part of the breach.

Highly recommend bringing your own snorkel. The crystal clear water was amazing for snorkeling. Also looks like a great place to scuba dive (although I have never dived just saw a ton of people diving)

For food Here's the rundown by resturant, the good and the bad.

Buffett - great for breakfast with a cooked to order eggs and omelet station. Lunch and dinner just so-so. Lots of choices but food is average or below average for lunch and dinner. Service at the Buffet is not great for all 3 meals. It takes a long time to get a drink sometimes you order a drink and it never comes. Often we would just get up and self serve ourselves juice and coffee at the Buffett.

Oceania - Seafood resturant open for dinner and lunch. Dinner was exceptional great food, try the Red Snapper or Garlic Shrimp or grilled Mahi Mahi. Service here is the BEST of all the restaurants on the resort, they really work as a team at this resturant.

De Marino - Italian food. The food itself is great. However the Sauce, especially tomato sauce is not good. The pizza is average good. Garlic bread and desserts here are great. Went 3 times, two male servers were great, had a nice meal, relaxed and was about an hour. Third time took over 2 hours, and mediocre service.

Hitmatsiu - Japanese Steakhouse. Food is Excellent! Need to make a reservation the day before, well worth it. Service is good here, just takes a while due to 4 courses of great food.

Blue Water - Steakhouse - food was average to good. Service was average. Worth going to once, but not the best on the resort.

Now, the Blue Water Steakhouse as well as Oceania are open for Lunch too, for lunch both have the same menu and have better food than the buffet. No waiter service just go to the counter and order, worked out great, quick service in ten minutes or less and food was good (grilled chicken sandwich, grilled fish sandwich, cheeseburger, hot dog, nachos, chicken nuggets, fries, etc) all food was great here at both places for Lunch.. Better than Buffett lunch.

Also blue water has the lunch menu and was open late night 10 pm - 1 am so that was cool after a night out!

Reason I rate the resort 3 or 4 stars instead of 5. The rooms, the one we had was great, saw a friends room, not so great so I guess it's hit or miss. But we didn't spend a ton of time in the room so no big deal.

Also Food at steakhouse (blue water), for dinner could be better. And service could be too.

Italian resturant needs better sauce.

Buffett needs better service and better food.

Also only one type of beer available (Amstel) although Amstel is good, if they just offered two more choices maybe a light beer like Amstel Bright or Corona, this would greatly improve the beer situation.

If these improvements are made it becomes a 4 1/2 star or 5 star resort in my book :-)

Here are some awesome staff we met during our trip:

Chin Ping is the best bartender (lobby Bar bartender) at the resort. He went out of his way to make us feel special on our honeymoon and made some awesome drinks. Also did this for other guest as well.

Chantel at Oceania is the best waitress on the resort and Mikie is a close second! The whole staff at Oceania is great and deserves applause.

O'Bryan on the entertainment team was cool and always had fun activities planned and tried to get everyone involved.

So thank you Sunscape, we had an awesome honeymoon and we will visit again someday for an Anniversary! Get some Amstel brights and being Italian, I will show you guys how to make a good tomato sauce!! :-)

My husband and I visited Sunscape Labor Day week for our second anniversary. We read the reviews and decided to give it the benefit of the doubt with plans to call ahead for the "upgraded room". The first clues started here. Each time we would call we would be transferred until we were finally disconnected. We tried several times to reach someone to help us, but were unable. Nobody seemed to be able to complete this simple, get critical, task. We arrived after our 15 hour trip to a very run down room. There was still sex on the blankets from previous visitors and the bathroom smells like an outhouse and was very run down. Stuff on the walls, a bed of cement...the ocean view room not only didn't face the ocean but didn't have a balcony to sit on. There was nothing comfortable about our room. They provide a table with ONE chair. The service was overall TERRIBLE! Because it is all inclusive, you have to ask for everything and each time I was met with someone who usually didn't acknowledge my presence, but once they did they were irritated by my request. By day 3 I was in melt down! The food in the main cafiteria is quesionable at best, usually out in the heat and bugs for extended periods of time...be careful. I think I had a mild case of food poisening for a couple days. You do NOT get internet with your room, you have to pay additional AND they don't tell you that it is only available in the lobby and NOT in your rooms. If you need help, even simple questions, you are passed from person to person because there is always someone ELSE that can answer it. It is run down and the customer service is horrible, do yourself a favor and spend money somewhere else. OH...and those pictures of that nice long white sandy beach...well thats not at this location, not sure where the pictures were taken. We kept looking at one another like we were victums of a prank...it was just unreal!

Room Tip: We tried to do what was suggested and call ahead, but we couldn't find someone to help us

Overall we had a good stay at sunscape. The main problem was paying extra for a "preferred club." and not being able to utilize it. When we first checked into the hotel we were not on the "preferred club list" and handed printed out material to prove we had in fact purchased it. The lady was very nice professional and welcoming after we showed her the material. The next day we asked for the internet code to use that was included in our preferred club benefits. The man argued with us for 5 minutes that we were not in the preferred club instead of looking to verify it. "You are not a preferred club member you have a junior suite." Response "no we paid extra for it." his response "show me the receipt" After 20 minutes of arguing one of the ladies decided to go into the front desk area to verify our package and low and behold we were "preferred club" members.

Aside from the preferred club experience, everyone else at the hotel was extremely helpful and nice. The food was great and there was a lot of options. Our room had a wonderful view and was very clean. The beach was gorgeous. All of the staff aside from the front desk, were very friendly and always willing to help. I would recommend this hotel but just do not pay extra to be a preferred club member it is not worth the money nor amenities.

We just returned from our stay at Sunscape Curacao Resort and we had both positive and negative experiences. We booked our stay online where we paid hundreds of dollars more for the preferred club ocean view room and after checking in we were placed in the building that was not the preferred club. After realizing they placed us in the wrong building we asked to be placed in the correct preferred club building 8 which is what we paid hundreds of dollars extra for. The staff at Sunscape told us that we were not in the preferred club which we had paid for and from the start we provided the staff with the proper reservation documentation proving that we in fact paid extra for the preferred club ocean view room and she continued to insist our reservation was not for the preferred club. The staff woman went to speak to her manager about this, but she kept saying he was unavailable. We ended up having to wait at least 2 hours to be checked into the correct preferred club room we paid for and we waited that whole time for the manager to come fix the problem and he never came to help us which caused the 2 hour waiting process. After 2 hours of waiting we were finally given the correct room in the preferred club due to the fact that another couple checking in at the same time as us wanted to move rooms and they said we could have their room in the preferred club. Had this couple not given us their room we would have waited even longer to get the correct room we paid extra for or maybe we would have never received it. This was a very negative experience for us because we just wanted to be able to stay in the correct room that we paid extra for and the hours delay made it very frustrating after traveling since 5am. We found it extremely unprofessional that the manager never came to correct the problem or greet us, but instead made us wait for hours and was busy.

The good thing is we only had a negative experience at check-in, although that made our vacation start out negatively and made it stressful, we did have a positive experience the rest of the time. We wished things would have started out differently and we would not have had to wait the hours to get the correct room we paid for and we wished the manager would have taken concern rather than being avoidant. It did not make us feel we could trust the staff at Sunscape due to the fact our reservation papers clearly showed we paid for the preferred club ocean view room and they did not want to honor our reservation.

The remaining time of our stay at Sunscape was all positive though. All of the staff at the restaurants, bars, concierge and housekeeping were very friendly and these staff were nice and helpful. We did not experience any other problems the rest of our stay. Our rooms were well cleaned, the food staff were great and all the bartenders were nice. We did tip all the bartenders, the preferred club beach butler and waiting staff at every restaurant with American dollars each time and I believe that makes a difference on how well you are served and treated. You don't have to tip much, but I believe that will help improve everyone's experience. The water in front of the resort was beautiful and snorkeling each day was my favorite part. While snorkeling you can see schools of different fish which was really neat because snorkeling in the Virgin Islands I did not see schools of fish like at Sunscape Curacao. As it has been mentioned before while entering the water in front of the resort the sand is very rocky and painful with bare feet so water shoes definitely help. I also recommend bringing your own snorkeling gear so you can snorkel as often as you want. We also visited another beach called Cas Abao in Curacao which is about 45 minutes from the hotel and I highly recommend that beach because the water seems clearer, the sand is softer and you can snorkel from the beach there as well and there are lots of fish and coral, I enjoyed this beach more than the beach at Sunscape. This was our first all-inclusive resort experience and we did enjoy the endless drinks and food that is available, we would only change our check-in experience. All in all our experience was good at Sunscape Curacao Resort except our very negative check in experience.

Room Tip: The preferred club is worth the extra money based on the size of the rooms and what comes included w...

My mother and I visited Sunscape last week, and we had the most amazing time. Truly this place was perfect. Although it is small and not as up to date as other hotels, our stay exceeded all of our expectations. The staff is overly pleasant; they go above and beyond to make sure their guests feel welcome and accommodated. Norma, Emerence, and Venedy were superb. They really contributed to the enjoyment of the stay.

The rooms are clean, simple, and comfortable. The grounds/hotel is very well kept. We had a ground floor room in the Pelican tower, facing the ocean. It was a great location, right outside a great bar, steps from the beach, and right next to the pool. What I loved so much about sunscape was the size of the resort. It was a perfect size, sometimes when hotels are too big it feels overwhelming, Sunscape was midsize and gave us a chance to form relationships with other guests during our stay.

The staff, like I said, was amazing. I’ve visited many other islands with aggressive, unaccommodating, and rude workers; I did not come across ONE during our whole week. Each member could not do enough to make sure we were happy.

The food was truly a pleasant surprise, I stayed at Ibersostar in Dominican Republic back in March which had terrible food, and so I expected similarly from Sunscape. Luckily, I was wrong. They have a Japanese restaurant, an Italian restaurant, a seafood restaurant, a steakhouse restaurant and a buffet. We had an array of options to choose from during the week, and all were quite enjoyable.

The location is BEAUTIFUL; the water is crystal clear, warm, and calm. The only downside would be the rocky sand/beach, bring those ugly water shoes, you’ll be happy you did. We had AMAZING weather every single day, hot and sunny all week, with nice trade winds to cool us off. The island is truly beautiful.

I thoroughly believe we got so much more than what we paid. It was an amazing experience, the staff, the grounds, the location, the food, the beach, but above all, the multiple friends we made. I will absolutely continue to visit sunscape in Curacao.

Room Tip: Upgrade to oceanview/VIP, you get free wifi all week and all the ocean views are pretty. You will b...
