“Saw 4 whales!”

IslandStyle Fishing Whale Watching & Charters
Reviewed 6 February 2014

We booked our whale watching adventure before leaving for our cruise to the Southern Caribbean. Captain Jerry met us at the designated hotel, even though we were a bit later than we'd hoped in getting there. He was kind and took good care of us. His love of the whales was obvious to us. We were all "whale watchers" and we found 4 Sperm Whales during our time on the water. We would book with him again if we are lucky enough to get back to Dominica.

We had stopped in Dominica on MV Ventura and the whale watching trip was pre-booked with P&O. The boat was on time, the crew were very helpful and knowlegable and the skipper had a real affection for the whales. He didn't get too close, we saw several sperm females with babies, he was concerned that the males had not showed up yet, and it was well over time. The was a BBC boat out at the same time, and so we had to give it a wide berth as apparently the divers pop up without warning and there had recently been a fatal accident. We didn't seem to go too far from the shore and on the way back a group of spotty dolphin played around the boat. Magical.

We booked the whale watching but needed to find more punters in order to secure the booking - cruise critic did the job and helped us to make new friends on our cruise too. In the end there were 8 of us - the main boat had problems but Jerry turned up on time at the jetty as planned in another smaller boat. Not luxurious but we all fitted comfortably and off we set in the quest to spot whales. It took a while but there they were, Bryte whales, loads of them - jumping fish trying to escape the whales and fishermen catching loads from their small boats. We also saw a whale shark and a Manta ray who had just caught a fish and swam under the boat with th fish in it's mouth. In the end we did not know which way to look!! I think Jerry was almost as excited as us! A wonderful afternoon and our trip back to the ship along the shore meant we also had a great view of the island of Dominica. Thank you Jerry - a super experience - no refund required!!!! :-)

Had tour booked with them. Had confirmed trip and they NO SHOWED at the pier day of charter.
They are horrible. We had to make alternative plans with my whole family with NO notice. They were even called by some nice people on the dock and said they had no boat, then lied and said they had sent an email informing me our tour was canceled. The local people said the owner is not a very reliable person and a "Jokester". Well I was not laughing.

After having completely given up on the idea of seeing anything other than birds, we thought we were headed back in to shore after what was obviously a tourist trap. Boy were we wrong!!

We saw a herd of about 30 pilot whales, it was absolutely breath taking. They were very inquisitive and we were literally surrounded by them. Soon after a pod of about 25 Fraser dolphins. They are a rare type with pink bellies. Very big in size and they were jumping all around the boat.

At one point we were surrounded by more than 50 mammals of the sea, and we watched them as the sun went down, and headed back in.

Amazing and romantic!!
