“4 nights in room 12 - nice stay”
Reviewed 25 March 2014

Stayed 4 nights in room 12 - by their indication the best room in the place. The room was huge with some outside seating (no balcony or anything). Room was clean but a bit dated and dark - not as a result of the jungle but just because of the low ceilings, etc. Didn't feel that authentic given the generic steel entry doors on the room (there were 2 entrances). Hot pool outside the room was very nice and the larger hot & cool pools down by the waterfall were nice.

Food was good - but not cheap (did not do the meal plan). The service at the main desk was good - was happy to book guides for hiking, do laundry, etc. However, the restaurant service wasn't great - but that seemed common on Dominica.

Very quiet and relaxing place - not much going on socially. Location was good for a lot of hiking and waterfalls, etc. Short 5-10 minute drive into Roseau (which can be a hassle to drive in given the one way streets - especially at night). A few restaurants within 5 minute drive are handy if you want to avoid Roseau.

We stayed at Papillote in the beginning of January 2014. It's a lovely spot with lush gardens and at least three natural hot pools to enjoy. The food was delicious. The staff was uniformly helpful and very friendly. We stayed for a week, and with a car, we were able to easily get around and see most of the island. The island has many beautiful hikes, ample rain forest, and scenic waterfalls. Our rooms (suite 9&10) were a bit cramped for our family of 4, with two adult children, but Anne warned us up front that that was all that was available in our time frame. For nature lovers and hikers (and birders) this is about as good as it gets!

We are able to take one vacation a year. For the past few years we have been going to Papillote on Dominica. We are worried that if we go elsewhere it won't be as perfect and we will have wasted our one opportunity. It is beautiful and totally relaxing. The food is excellent (we are vegetarians and the staff have no problem accommodating us with great local produce) and the gardens sublime. Papillote is a Wilderness retreat, anyone looking for a 5 star hotel should skip it, there are no hot towels or chocolate on your pillow. However the rooms are clean, the beds are comfortable and the staff are warm, friendly and will all they can do to meet your needs. The gardens are world class, make sure to ask Marcel to take you on a tour. The hiking on the island is great, nothing like coming back from a hike and sitting in a natural hot spring pool with a rum punch! At night you go to sleep to the sounds of running water and chirping (?) tree frogs. Truly a magical place.

Room Tip: Room 12 is the largest and nicest (right above the original hot spring pool)

I find the comments about dated rooms etc, rather puzzling. Dominica is not Barbados (thank God) and Papillote represents what is best about Dominica. Anne and her staff are truly friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and as my partner said our room or rather suite was actually bigger than our whole flat at home!
Anne has devoted her life to creating this wonderful place, the gardens are fantastic, with so many little places to sit and relax or read. No, there is no TV, no spa or other entertainments save the best entertainment of all, Nature all around you.
It takes about twenty minutes to drive up from Roseau, you are high in the hills which means the temperature is cooler than the coast.
So in a nutshell, if you want all the "bells and whistles" of five star hotels don't go to Dominica, however if you want to meet some of the friendliest people in the Caribbean, and to experience the wonderful rainforest not to mention some lovely unspoilt beaches, then go to Dominica and do stay at Papillote, you won't be disappointed.

Stayed at Papillote with friends who have a place in Dominica. The grounds, gardens and hot pools were fantastic - a lush rainforest experience. The rooms, however, varied greatly in appearance. Our room did not look like any represented on TripAdvisor or Papillote's website. Our 2 bdrm suite (#10) was quite basic and dated. It was clean, no complaints there. Be sure to bring your own shampoo, conditioner and hair dryer as none of those items are provided. There were plenty of decks and outdoor patio spaces for our room and our friend's room. The restaurant was adequate, breakfast was good but dinner was somewhat disappointing as every fish dinner was filled with bones. Restaurant service varied greatly as well depending on who was serving - for example, you may be nearly done with your meal before getting the drink you requested. So long as your patient and curb expectations, you'll be fine. Papillote is all about the garden environment and hot pools really.

Room Tip: Room quality varies widely - be sure about what you are getting when reserving.

Don't let my rating deter you (I stay in a LOT of different places and rate on the bell curve). I actually enjoyed my time at this hotel and found it very acceptable. Travelers need to know that it isn't a luxury place, but that it has plenty of amenities. If you have to have first world surroundings, you should understand that all the water is from the hot springs on the property with a strong iron content (drinking water is provided and plentiful). The windows do not have glass and remembering you are in a rain forest, you will have visitors. There is mosquito netting but I didn't use it because it was cool enough there were no mosquitos. The grounds are incredibly beautiful and the landscaping without par. My room was well furnished and comfortable and well kept.
The hotel's location at first seems a little remote, but it is actually well situated for most of the activities in the Roseau area - but rent a car. I only ate at the restaurant twice - one time it was good and I really enjoyed the food; the other time, the food was only average. But you are close enough to drive into Roseau easily enough.
