“Roseau, Dominica, lovely island, hotel needs some improving”
Reviewed 18 April 2013

We stayed at this hotel from March 19th to April 5th 2013. We started off in Room 1. There was only one plug in the whole room that could be used to recharge all the things that we had (iphone, camera, mobile etc) so that was the first problem. On the balcony was a bottle of beer full of cigarettes. We couldn't open the door to the balcony which was the main reason why the maid informed us that she hadn't seen the bottle because she too couldn't open the door. We ended up leaving it open once we managed to open it. There was only one bedside cabinet and we had to request another for the other side of the bed. There was no hot water in the sink tap. The breakfasts were very meagre: we had to beg for more butter and jam each day making us feel uncomfortable and also making us look as though we were complaining each day (but we weren't, we simply had to keep asking for something that should have been widely available at breakfast!). We complained to the hotel manager after my husband plugged in an item and the plug nearly electrocuted him. We were moved from our ordinary room to a huge, massive suite upstairs.

We were very impressed at first but soon found even more problems. One thing you need in a very hot country is either a ceiling fan (or any kind of fan), or air con. There were two ceiling fans in our suite so we thought we were lucky; however only one worked and that did not spin fast enough to actually create any wind flow around the room and we ended up switching it off. We then put on the air con but again we had an issue. The air con worked but the air vents only pointed downwards and not outwards so all the air went straight down the wall and the room just boiled. The slats in the windows looked great except that at nights because there is no glass in the windows (just slats) all the mosquitoes come and bite you whilst you sleep! I was covered in bites by the morning and itched like hell! The other problem was that although we had a kitchen in the suite when you opened the fridge door the small freezer door across the top of the fridge fell open and you couldn't reclose the fridge door without holding the freezer door and then having to pull your hands out really fast! It was all too much.

We requested that we be moved back to the first room which they did. They gave us an extension lead for the electrics and we stayed in that room for the rest of the holiday. The bed in room 1 is huge and the suite has 2 double beds so take your pick.

A few other issues was that we were there for the easter holidays and the hotel had no staff in the evenings to provide meals, though we did get breakfast. They do offer a cooked breakfast but no one told us until we'd been there for about 10 days! The cooked breakfast was very nice and had quite a few after that. But we still had the problem with the continental breakfast. The blurb on the internet says continental with fresh fruit - all we ever got was some old bananas and once there was mangoes. We stayed in this hotel for 3 weeks but I suspect there may be better hotels around. Although I wouldn't slag off this hotel completely, I don't think we will be staying there again but it is very convenient if you want to stay slap bang in the middle of Roseau. However, if we couldn't find somewhere else we would probably stay here again.

However, the staff were very good, especially the cleaning staff who were really friendly and deserved the large tip we gave them. The rooms are really large with lots of space. The shower in both rooms were really good and had hot and cold water. There are lots of shops in the area and there is an ATM right across the road. The air con in room 1 was excellent and the ceiling fan worked and the air con is right over the bed so you get the breeze right on you. Breakfast needs to improve - they need to get more generous. We can make our own toast but it seems they feel the need to make it for you (especially as they use a normal toaster!). I don't know why they can't just put some butter and jam on the table and just let people help themselves (it's rationed and you have to keep asking for more!).

Room Tip: We stayed in Room 1 which is a good room (within reason). Make sure you have glass in your windows a...

Located at one of the main streets of Dominica's capital Rosseau. It is less than 5 minutes walk from the international ferry terminal. If you are coming from Guadeloupe, Martinique or Saint Lucia by express ferry, look no further and stay here. There are numerous restaurants, fast food outlets and supermarkets nearby. Banks, ATM machines and the town's main tourist sights are also nearby. Most importantly, it is safe to walk around here even on Sunday when Rosseau is pretty desserted.

The hotel has a beautiful colonial ambience. It is family owned. Ginnette (owner) and staff are extremely friendly and helpful. My suite is cozy and spacious. I love the double bed, dining room table, the balcony and fully equipped kitchen.

Dominica is one of my favourite islands. I will definitely stay in Sutton Place again when I return.

Good location in the middle of Roseau.
Rooms were good too, quite big, and clean, modern, comfy bed.
Bathroom was a bit odd, but still clean
Staff who checked me in and out were a bit grumpy, though, but others seemed very good.
Overall, a good choice for Roseau if you want to stay in town.
Recommended.

This one is pretty good for where it is -- Roseau. So long as expectations aren't too high you're not likely to be disappointed. There's a nice restaurant, a viable pub in the cellar open evenings, and pleasant enough ambiance. Rooms stolidly furnished, the building is well-built, and old enough to feel kinda historic. Renovation/conversion was competent. Except for light in bathroom, mosquitos, and the original windows keep out zero noise. Fortunately the town is mostly dead late night otherwise would be difficult to sleep here. Large bed felt like two small ones pushed together and wasn't too comfortable. Internet not great unless only limited use is needed. AC had only one speed -- too cold. Room size average to small. Location is central: easy walk to pier and conveniences close. But, in a town of this size nothing really is too far to walk. Breakfast included was a piece of bread, a glass of colored sugar water and undrinkable coffee. Can purchase items off menu though. Can't say I would repeat here though all things considered, better options.

I stayed at this hotel for a week in August, right around the time when Hurricane Isaac was due to blow through. The night before it was forecast to hit, the manager made sure the guests had bottles of water, candles, and a flashlight. They also offered us lunch before the kitchen closed early. In the end, the storm missed the island, but while we were waiting, it was reassuring to know that the hotel was well-prepared. Its location is perfect for exploring Roseau, and the staff were very friendly. The A/C was cold, the WIFI fast, and the restaurant delicious.

Great location in Roseau, especially if you're going to the cricket at Windsor Park. Very nice continental breakfast each morning which is included in the price and very friendly, helpful staff.
Rosanna, Nashia and Diana are so warm and nice. Rooms clean and comfortable, would definitely stay here again.
