“Great dive lodge and dive operator”
Reviewed 4 August 2009

We'd agree with the other reviews that it's an ideal dive lodge, simple but comfortable. The staff were friendly and helpful and the food and cocktails were great and very good value for the Caribbean. Also it was never any trouble for us to dine by the sea, even though the staff thought it too cold and damp! Whilst the hotel is a bit out of town the fact that the dive operation is on site more than compensates.
Dive Dominica were very efficient with a good emphasis on safety. This meant although we were always accompanied by a dive master it was more in the capacity of guide and they were happy to give us space to explore at our own pace - whilst being around to point out highlights such as sea horses!

We went for the diving, but we got so much more! We paid for the diving and excursions as part of our package. This was absolutely the best way to experience Dominica.

Our dive staff were friendly and very professional. They made sure all our dives were extraordinary, and when we asked, they took us to the spots we requested. All the shore dives we could handle were free and the staff were even there to assist us right to the end of the dock!

Castle Comfort uses Khatts tours for the excursions. My husband and I are not usually the "tour" type, preferring to set out on our own, but the knowledge we gained from these experienced guides was worth it. The groups were small anyway; the only other people with us were from our hotel.

The location was great, too. We didn't want to be right in Roseau, but we were able to walk to town whenever we wanted, for shopping and meals.

Taxis and mini-busses are available everywhere. Beware of the taxi driver with the limp! He frequents the hotels, looking for naive travellers. When we didn't agree to meet him at a set time for the return trip to our hotel one night, he changed his fare to double the rate we agreed on. We told Castle Comfort's bartender, and he said he would have words with the man, so hopefully any new travellers don't encounter him at the hotel anymore.

All of our staff were amazing. When we arrived, we noticed we came in at the same time as two large groups. We thought we might have a negative experience at the hotel because of this, but it was not the case at all. Even though we were only a twosome, we got all the personalized service we could want. Even the owner made sure he was always around to make sure everyone was having a great time.

Dominica has great dive sites and Dive Dominica is first class operation. There were 6 to 8 divers per trip supported by one or two divemasters plus a boat captain. The staff were both friendly and helpful. They load and unload the gear and helped remind me the set up. The rides to the dive sites about 15 minutes each way. I stayed in room 15 at Castle Comfort about 10 feet from the water and listened to the waves lapping the shoreline to put me to sleep each night. (room 14 also water front). I used the AC a few hours during the day but the fan and screen door were perfect at night. The Inn is just right for my taste. Not extra fancy, but clean and very far from "roughing it". The breakfasts (15$) and dinners (25$) were convenient if not a bit expensive (but this may be me out of touch with costs. Late in the week a group of 8 divers arrived and sort of took over the place and I liked it better w/o the commotion but all in all I would go back in an instant

My husband and I stayed at the Castle Comfort Scuba Lodge for 6 nights between Christmas and New Years. The people are extremely friendly especially the owners. The food at the hotel is pretty good and the prices are comparable to other restaurants in the area. The bar is cute but the prices a little high compared to the town of Roseau. There are small hotels on either side of Castle Comfort which also have restaurants. It is also extremely easy to catch the local bus for a 3 minute ride into Roseau for bars and restaurants.

We picked Castle Comfort because it has an onsite dive shop. We have been scuba diving for years and have been at sites around the world. The scuba shop is called Dive Dominica and is one of the best. Extremely friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful staff who are very focused on safety and taking care of their equipment. It is obvious that they enjoy their work. The office staff were also very helpful and went out of their way to set up some on land excursions to meet our needs. The hotel has various dive packages and we picked the 3 days scuba, unlimited shore dives, 3 on land excursions, all breakfasts, and 1 whale watching tour. The whale watching tour was fantastic… we saw sperm whale, false killer whales and 100s of spotted dolphin. This island is truly a Garden of Eden so the on land tours were incredible. On one tour there were only us and 3 other people. On another day, we were able to combine two tours for a long day. On this day it was just the two of us with a tour guide named Big Mama. Big Mama was fantastic and took us to places that weren’t even on the tours just because he is so proud of his island.
We highly recommend this dive lodge!

Be sure and check into this carefully before you stay here. I cannot believe the ratings that we have seen since our miserable trip there. One of the worse properties I have ever stayed in anywhere. Go elsewhere or beware.

The diving in Dominica is really great and the dive operation is very very good - experienced dive masters, good equipment and large, new boats. On land, however, I was disappointed. The food is very overpriced - for about $15 you get a dry hamburger on two pieces of bread - no discount since they ran out of buns. Dinners were good but not worth $40. Drinks have no alcohol in them - my pina colada tasted like a milk shake

I was pleasantly surprised to find such pristine diving on this small tropical island. Is is obviously a well-kept secret as the coral is beautiful and unspoiled. I saw only a few sharks and stingrays, but lots of eels and porcupine puffers, several turtles and seahorses, and lots of neat, small critters. The orange and purple colors on the reefs and huge barrel sponges and soft corals were incredible.

We stayed at Castle Comfort Lodge. It is small but the rooms were large with good storage. The ocean-view rooms are worth the extra cost. The food and service were excellent. The "catch of the day" was always a good choice, along with fresh salads and tasty vegetables, not to mention desserts that included homemade ice cream. The restaurant staff would find out what you wanted for lunch if you were taking an afternoon tour, so that when you returned at 12:45pm from your 2-tank boat dives, you could shower, dress and get to the table at the same time your lunch was presented. This was definitely a nice feature of staying in a small, intimate resort that did those "extra" things to make your stay more enjoyable and stress-free.

Dive Dominica is based at Castle Comfort. The dive staff was excellent...very friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The shore diving at this resort was very good, with 24/7 access to the tanks and your dive equipment in the storage area. There were flying gurnards, small electric rays and "the almost never seen" snake eel (which is totally hidden in the sand except for his eyes and teeth) right out front of this resort.

When you weren't diving you could take a whale-watching tour (only 2 miles offshore), hike into lush rainforests to beautiful waterfalls or soak in one of the hot springs. You could walk (30 minutes) into the town of Roseau (or take the resort shuttle).

I'm sure that must have been something negative about this trip but I just can't seem to remember it. We had a wonderful experience and plan to go back and take friends.
