Owner description: A historic cobbled square often crowded with vegetable vendors.

Start shopping in Roseau right off the cruise ship dock. Vendors have tents lining the rocky shore. Explore a block or two back; right into cobble-stone Old Market Square.Trinkets are hand-made or imported (read labels or just ask). Buy a carved item-no pics etiquette though as the vendor(s) want exclusive rights & this is understandable given this may be their only source of income. The museum tourist associates will give you plenty of info. Great place to pick up a few unique gifts. Fairly safe for tourists during the day as it is closely monitored by the uniformed police in the square but be alert. However, you will be approached by many private tour operators repeatedly- which can be slightly annoying. Royal Bank of Canada right at dock. Watch the fisherman clean their catch-right at the dock & transported by bicycle or motorized ice-box directly to restaurant/hotel/store sales. Buy bananas & other fruit (mostly on Saturdays).

Nearly all items except local crafts came from the USA with a 15% VAT. I did find one shop which made local shirts & bags. My shirt ran red for 5-washes, so don't put any thing near your hand made clothes. It was $15 US and nicely made as was the local bag for my lady at $15.

This market has all the character of the old markets. The sellers are so
friendly and have no problem sharing their recipes with you to prepare vegetables that you are not familiar with. I bought a whole tuna yesterday and they prepare it for me ready to go the barbeque. This is mango time! Great selection of of local fruits and veggies. All at a very reasonable price and with a lot of local flavor

A must!

Market itself colorful and fun. But most impressed by the actual slave market buildiing and stone pavement, under which allegedly many slaves are buried.

Really if you come dominica, you should also visit there. There are so much variety of fruits that you would not get anywhere else in Dominica as most of all the fammers would meet especially on a saturday, and sale their fruits and vegetables there. So its a nice place to visit especially on saturday mornings.
