“A MUST STAY IN DOMINICA”
Reviewed 8 May 2011

This family run hotel offers a great experience on the island for visitors. The hotel is clean, service is great, and has a great location within the city. The Ft. Young has a great security staff. This is the only hotel I would stay in while in Dominica.

Comfortable room with ocean view and oversized bathroom, helpful and pleasant staff, and a good location just 5 mins walk from restaurants and shops, but the food was disappointing, especially lunch. Whoever is in charge of refilling the buffet station shouldn't allow the diners to be scraping the near empty food servers for more vegetables, then having the diners wait while the chef rustles up some more cause they ran out. Food wasn't very tasty either, somebody needs to go on a refresher course to bring the restaurant up to the rating of the hotel.

Room Tip: Stay in the updated rooms away from cruise ships

We stayed 2 nights here when we first arrived in Dominica. The staff was excellent, friendly and very helpful. The restaurant was very nice, food was prepared and presented well, but a little pricey. There was a one-man-band playing a mix of smooth jazz and Caribbean rhythms that were very enjoyable and not intrusive on the meal.

The location is at the southern edge of Roseau, but not too far to walk to the open market or stores. There are several café style eateries nearby and pleasant walks of varied lengths. Plus, many of the sights are a short drive from the hotel.

The grounds were well maintained and clean. The rooms, at least in the new section, were very clean and spacious with more than adequate balconies overlooking the sea with the rocky coast just below allowing for the sounds of the small waves coming ashore. This made for some pleasant sleeping, if you enjoy these sounds. If not, close the sliding doors to the balconies and you hear nothing.

The sea shore is very rocky and swimming should be planned for the infinity pool with a large waterfall into one end and a nice view of the Caribbean from the water and the deck where plenty of umbrella tables are placed on two sides of the pool.

We will be staying here again.

This a a Caribbean hotel, on the very edge of an undeveloped town on an undeveloped island - if you are of a nervous disposition you will find the town intimidating, especially at night, and especially for unaccompanied females. The basic room is very basic, we were very dissappointed given the price we paid - BUT Mrs Frederickson the manager upgraded us to de-luxe the next day. De-luxe is the second of four levels of room and is very, very good - virtually a suite, beautifully equipped with a panoramic ocean view - we saw a hump backed whale 100 yards from our balcony. However 50% of the view is blocked 5/6 days out of seven by the conveyor belt of ocean liners that park right outside the hotel and each day that happens anything from 300 to 3000 mostly overweight, mostly badly dressed, passengers descend on the town where there is a frenzy of market stall and tour guide activity to greet them. There is no beach and apart from the town nothing to do unless you hire a taxi and a guide and travel into the island where you can hike, swim in waterfalls, watch birdlife, snorkel - you can also do whale and dolphin trips from the hotel jetty. Breakfast is a buffet at about £8, but service is below standard, evening meals are very good, with great service but pricey (about £40 a head for three courses). There are some very good local restaurants for about half the price. Sonia will organise any trips you want - it can be considerably cheaper outside the hotel but you will be gambling on quality - the roads are terrible and most of the drivers are worse, do not self drive. Reception staff, bar staff and cleaning staff were all great but they need to sort out breakfast staff and their pricing and keep basic rooms for one night stays or make it very clear just how basic they are.

After a long period of researching the various Roseau hotels and hilltop eco options, I chose Fort Young and am very glad I did. It's clearly the nicest anywhere near Roseau. We stayed 5 nights. Large, very nice, good bar/bar food, restaurant overlooking ocean, pool, activities desk, etc. Exceeded my expectations. If you're expecting top-of-the-line resort like you'd see in more visited locations like Cancun or Dominican Republic, you'll be disappointed, but it's not advertised to be that and you're not paying for that. Most important, we walked and drove all around Roseau and inner valleys and the other options were less than I had assumed from the earlier research. Fort Young is right on the ocean (no beach), with great views. The Garraway is across the street (not on ocean) - nice, but not as nice. We were surprised how rough some of the eco hotels we saw were (never saw Manicou or Jungle Bay, which both look nice online).

If you're a diver, Dominica is fantastic. Great walls, huge life, healthy reefs. Fort Young uses the same dive operator as Castle Comfort. Anchorage and Castle Comfort are two miles south and not nearly as nice. We also found it much cheaper to stay at Fort Young and book the 3-day dive package than to book the full Castle Comfort stay&dive. Highly recommend Dive Dominica. We were concerned by the large size of some of the boats on their web site, but it was never a problem. Two of the days had maybe 10 divers, which was fine. One day had a lot more, but they split into two boats to two separate sites and also separated the experienced from inexperienced with separate dive masters. It was great.

There's not much in Roseau and for the most part it shuts down at 6pm. If you're reading about the interesting sounding places to eat, note that most non-hotel close at 5 or 6. The roads are rough and we saw a lot of construction in the interior. Most of the roads have as their edge water runoff channels that drop straight down - if you run off the edge, the car will be on its side and you're not getting out. We rented a car. I had a blast driving on the left and navigating the craziness, but my fiance was frantic in the passenger seat.

The interior is spectacular. We hiked around Morne Trois Pitons National Park, Freshwater Lake, Trafalgar Falls, etc. Incredible rainforests. We like to explore new places, but between the rainforests and the diving, it's the only place where we want to come back to see more. If you're both hiking and diving, 5 days isn't nearly enough.

That was an awful hotel, in the sense that value for money was very low. And don't believe on what advertises. Price of rooms "Ocean Front View" in the catalogue is $135, but we were charged with $250 per day (!!) because prices have increased in 2011 (how much have they been increased and why this was not communicated in the catalogue??). "Ocean Front View" is also a lie. This is valid only after 17H00 (when people are often out of rooms). Mornings you open curtains and huge cruise boats are exactly outside from yoru balcony. We also slept terribly because "Ocean Front View" Rooms are next to the central A/C Unit with amazing noise. There are many much more great hotels in Dominica (as I have checked around). Please don't go in this one even if the Agency suggests it (as my Agency did).

We stayed here during Carnival 2011. Very convenient to walk the couple of blocks where most activities were but far enough away to not be in the middle of it all. Neat watching the ships pull up each morning. While the rooms are really nice, and the view from the restaurant is great, we'd recommend saving your money and venture out to one of the nearby (local) food shacks, restaurants, diners because we were really disappointed with the food here. Amenities and service very good. If you like poking around in ruins or old forts, this will be of interest to you for at least one night's stay.
