“Charming!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 May 2012

Fort Young is a charming spot in the heart of Roseau! From the booking experience to our departure the employees were very accommodating.

After a bumpy crazy evening ride from Melvillehall Airport we were ready to unwind. We were pleasantly greeted at the front desk with warm white cloths to freshen our hands and offered a glass of wine. The bellhop had quite a hop in his step, but we were able to keep up with him during the 5 minute walk to our room.

Once you enter the lobby, it is stone-walled with dark accents. There is a long hallway leading to the rooms and dining areas. The front desk to the left of the entry way is highlighted with red and yellow accents.

The room was adjacent to the pool in the 100 block - the spaciousness of the room and the ocean-view made for an inviting stay. Daytime offers the best view of the ocean from the room.

This room was painted in and island Peach hue, very calming and decorous. Upon entering the closets are spacious and clean complete with full size ironing board and iron. Next to is is a large bathroom - superior in size. There is a huge bathtub and shower combination. On the balcony, there are 2 chairs and a table to enjoy the view.

Each conference room was equipped for audio/visual, podium and a/c. I loved the stone-walls and the old world feel of the property.

Upon arrival, I had forgotten my toothbrush and toothpaste, the desk agent came to the room for the cash and walked to town to pick-up the items for me. It took maybe 10 minutes and they were very honest and helpful.

I would not recommend walking into Roseau or the surrounding areas at night. There are flat screen TV's in the room and enough entertainment at the hotel. Friday nights are BBQ fetes island-wide. It's bonkers! The hotel offered the same at the property with a DJ. You can have a great meal under $40US.

Room Tip: Highly recommend an Ocean-view room!

The hotel is ideally located on the waterfront & we had a room with a view over the ocean & cruise ships that were in town. We were in Dominica to watch cricket at Windsor Park so the location was very suitable as only a 10 min walk through the very local streets of Roseau. The room was clean & large with a TV, safe, fridge, WIFI & lovely balcony with comfy chairs. There is a lovely pool area by the ocean. There are a couple of restaurants & the food was good as long as you were patient to receive. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in Dominica, the walk home from the cricket via the local rum shacks was unforgettable.

Room Tip: A lot of the rooms do have an ocean view, some better than others but worth asking for even with a s...

A little expensive for this island. But because it really is the only game in town other than the Garraway hotel across the street they can charge what they want. views are spectacular from the ocean front rooms. service was friendly and good. wifi was good. the town was a little scketchy. Going out at night might frighten some people. attractions on the island however were more than spectacular. Our guide NINJA MAN was the best. He knew every square inch of the island. His real name is mervin henderson. His # 767 245 5058. I would not recommend renting a car because the roads are treacherous. If you are looking for real adventure then this would be your island.

The Fort Young Hotel in Roseau, Dominica is perhaps the premier hotel on this small island. Everything from the lobby, restaurants, shops, swimming pool, to the "upgraded" room where I stayed with my fiance was somewhat dingy. We received a "welcome" fruit plate which was nice; and being hungry from the flights, I quickly devoured most of it. I wanted to save some for my fiance so I covered the uneaten portion with the plastic wrap. A few hours later after dark, we returned to the room and while my fiance was turning on the lights I grabbed a piece of fruit from the plate and put it into my mouth. As soon as the lights went on I saw numerous bugs and insects crawling all over the fruit and plate. I quickly spit it out!

The hotel food is mediocre and overpriced for Dominica, an undeveloped island; on Monday nights the Caribbean buffet at the Marquis Restaurant is not very good for $32.41. You'll do much better with the buffets in Las Vegas or Atlantic City. The breakfast on the outdoor terrace is decent, the atmosphere is pleasant and the views of the Caribbean Sea, seaport and mountains are stunning.

Dominica, the "nature island", has a lot of natural beauty. It is geared more for younger travelers who are able to hike for miles and not so much for older travelers. For example, the famous "boiling lake" is an EIGHT mile hike on a nature trail. Also, to go swimming in Titou Gorge or the Emerald Pool, one has to walk some sixty feet over slippery, pointed rocks. I had to pass on both attractions due to the danger involved. My fiance, however, was successful in navigating the terrain and got fairly nice swims.

The Roseau Botanic Gardens is not really a botanical gardens; it's just an area that is called that. Although rich in flora, it is no different from most other areas in Dominica. We went to Screw’s Sulphur Springs and it was closed to our disappointment (Mondays). The driver was familiar with another sulphur spa in Dominica's Roseau Valley, Tia's, which is located right down the road in the village of Wotten Waven. So we went there and chose a private room. We did not like it; it was dark, dank and dirty. From the images that I have seen online, Screw's looks much nicer.

The highlight of our trip was the Anchorage Whale Watch tour. It was on a nice yacht with a cheerful staff serving drinks and explaining the different aspects. We were lucky and saw about twelve whales that afternoon; we were told that the morning trip did not have one single sighting.

They do have ferry services from Dominica to Saint Lucia, Martinique and Guadeloupe. That would have been a wise excursion to visit one of these islands to spend a day at the beach. That's because Dominica is almost entirely composed of volcanic rocks and thus void of beaches. My next trip to the Caribbean will be somewhere with good beaches!

Room Tip: Facing the Caribbean Sea presents stunning views.

Obviously the situation is wonderful - get a seaview room and just enjoy. And it works better than expected - good internet, reasonable service and the price of extras is not that cruel for a hotel with this level.

Room Tip: sea view maybe on 2 or 3rd level. Nice!

This is a very clean, well up kept hotel in the carbbean. We loved our short stay and the staff was so helpful when our flight was delayed for two days. Everything was perfect here.
