“Don't even think TWICE about staying here...book it!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 28 March 2010

Just got back early this morning from this trip that we went through a dive tour company who booked our rooms and really didn't know what to expect. We knew that the island was a little 'rough' and prepared ourselves for any short comings (I'm a little embarrassed, but I brought a pillow and an actual bar of soap) But after arriving, being driven through the most incredible forests, mountains and narrow (death defying?) twisty roads, we were blown away. On the edge of the 'city' of Roseau (very third world), we arrived at Fort Young and were escorted to a welcoming reception flowing with rum punch and appetizers. The head of security ("Chief") escorted us to our rooms in the NEW part of the hotel* and WOW. We had a blow-your-mind view right over the ocean, bay and toward the mountains. The room was ENORMOUS, CLEAN, well appointed (hello internet and all the premium channels!). The bathroom was, well, any woman would approve! And YES! they had soap (Bath and Body Works Cocoanut/Lime body wash/shampoo, etc.). Open that sliding Pella door and you slept to the lulling sounds of the waves crashing against the boulders below your balcony.

The dive center at the hotel was run by Ken and "Dive Dominica" who had their main dive center 15 minutes away by boat. The boat that we used was in great shape (yay, it had a bathroom!), the captain and dive masters (Kevin's the best!) were knowledgeable, professional and FUN! The dive locations were along the shores all within 15-25 minutes from the hotel and were all very special. The water was clear, the underwater life was plentiful and the diving was so relaxing ranging from steep cliffs and drops to 25 sand and coral/sponge fields; turtles, eels, colorful fish, etc. everywhere. We even were joined one day by a huge pod of porpoise who played around our boat on the way back to shore. Every afternoon after diving the staff at the shop would take care of our gear and it would be there waiting for us in the morning.

The restaurant at the hotel did a great job of serving both local cuisine AND your typical 'high end' style dishes (lamb, fish, pastas) and we have two terrific dinners there. BUT we mostly ended up eating down in the bar on the reception level. Great Roti, jerk chicken, island music and some locals. Order the fruit plate; it's like you've never tasted. All fresh from the island; spectacular.

Sonia Lander-James, the wonderful woman who greeted us every morning with a warm smile, manned the activities and tours desk that most everyone took advantage of. Those who didn't take side trips during the day, sat by the pool drinking the cold local beer Kabuli or nursing a rum punch and watching the cruise ships that tied up just off the pier down the shore from the hotel. A few from our group had massages and rolled their eyes back to show how good they were and others used the gym everyday.

Bottom line, if you can afford the whole week, enjoy creature comforts, and don't mind a 'roller coaster of a ride' to and from the airport, you will not be disappointed by the Fort Young Hotel.

*I've heard that the older part of the hotel is a whole different story so just splurge and go for the ocean front deluxe rooms!

Nice place to stay. The hotel meets international 4 star level, however it's not really professionally managed to reach 5 stars according our experience. However, definitely worth a stay, as you feel the history in the hotel, service and restaurants are very well and overall friendly, although not always efficient ("better relax than rush"). The view over the ocean is specatular, and the location is very central. Nice swimming pool overlooking the ocean. Take some tours to the wonderful island of Dominica.

Great location- within walking distance to shops and Carnival festivities. Ocean view room was amazing. We slept with the balcony door open each night to hear the surf below. The room was very nice- comfortable bed, large bathroom with contoured tub, large balcony. Great location for divers as the dive shop was just downstairs. The dive boat picks up and drops off at the hotel, and dive sites are just a few minutes away by boat. The Scottshead Soufriere marine preserve is a very healthy reef- we saw sea turtles, sea horses, eels, frogfish and flying guinards, along with gorgeous hard and soft corals.
The cruise ships were so silent we never knew when they arrived or left. They never obstructed our view or prevented us from enjoying any of the restaurants or bars at the hotel. The Waterfront Restaurant at the hotel was so good, we always returned here for our meals- try the fish and lamb. Live music was provided every night- piano at the Waterfront restaurant and a steel drum band in the bar area. The Friday night Happy Hour was well-attended by locals and hotel guests.
We arranged our land activities through Khatt's at the hotel (Boiling Lake hike, snorkeling and bird watching tour, hike to Middleham Falls and to hot water pools in Wotten Waven). While they may charge more than we were offered in town, they accompanied us for the duration of each activity and never abandoned us at a location, as happened to some of the cruise ship people who used other companies/individuals that they found in Roseau.
The gym has new equipment and is well-maintained. The pool has an infinity edge and waterfall, plenty of chairs, and its own bar.
We have traveled to other spots in the Caribbean with mixed reviews. We were so happy with our stay at the Fort Young that we will return again.

Great location for the restaurant overlooking the harbour.Service very slick but you are paying for it. Good Caribbean and international food. Also a snack bar in the middle of the hotel which is best avoided if there is a cruise ship in as it gets very busy.

I was very impressed with the location, amenities and food service at this hotel. I have no complaints whatsoever. I have travelled all over the Caribbean and would recommend this hotel highly. I would stay here again without hesitation.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 November 2009

I checked in to the hotel for a conference and was placed in the older section of the hotel, and given a ocean view room. Three issues detracted from my stay.
1) The room had numerous mosquitos that fed on me throughout the night, despite requests for spraying in the room, the mosiquitos persisted and the ants in the bathroom were daily reminders of my unhappiness.
2) Hot water was absent 4 of 7 days; when it was present it had insuffiecent force to remove soap and shampoo. A request to the front desk brought a quick response from maintainence who unhappily reported the hotel had lower water supplies leading to low pressure.
3) Lastly rooms in the older section of the hotel over"hear" the bar and on nights with live entertainment ,the lack of full windows on the rooms have music playing until much later than i wished.
