This beautiful oasis is as far as one can get from the rut "If it's Tuesday, this must be the Topeka Holiday Inn, not the Wichita Holiday Inn." Pluses: Pristine cleanliness throughout, superbly attentive, courteous service from everyone (and multilingual), knowledgeable concierge, 3 internet terminals for use free, newspapers in 3 languages available daily for free reading, wide comfortable bed, spacious room, bathroom has a bathtub AND a shower (separate!), quiet, lovely view from patio (it's fascinating and relaxing to watch a cruise ship depart, as I did), pool on patio, snacks and drinks available on patio, but guests can relax there withOUT being pressured to purchase, airy Spanish-castle architecture, excellent location for walking to the numerous museums and historic sites of Zona Colonial, sumptuous and high-variety breakfast buffet, superb chef in hotel restaurant (which is praised, and justly so, in restaurant lists, e.g. Fodor's, as well as hotel lists). I'd just gently suggest grab-bars and a soap tray in the shower, and a writing desk in the room.

Room Tip: Ignore spa rating: I did not use.

We were in Santo Domingo for two lovely days in December. The Zona Colonial location was great for access to Museums, the Cathedral, the Fort, and the beach, though a little more rough and ready for most. The history of the fort and the Cathedral was great, and easily accessible from the hotel. The concierge and Nicolas De Ovando was excellent and helped us set up a jaunt to Los Tres Ojos, a set of underground pools in caves nearby.

The pool area and its surrounding courtyard were an amazing feature of the hotel, listed as a UNESCO historic location. The place is seething with history being the former seat of power and home of the colonial governor of Santo Domingo. His countenance is memorably captured in a portrait in the lobby. The staff are very courteous and attentive.

The hotel is on the historic street Las Damas and the area is great. Be careful, it's not the most safe environment, but the hotel grounds are well-protected and the surrounding area, including the fort across the street are an incredible setting. You can't help feel a bit of a conquistador staying here.

You can atone a bit for that feeling with a quick walk down to the water, and the huge sculpture to Friar Anton De Montesinos looking out over the Caribbean sea. The waterfront is dirty and in disarray in spots (we saw a small pack of wild dogs down there--seriously!), but it was a sight for a beautiful sunset.

Overall, the Hotel sets you up for a fun visit to a place with tremendous history. Just make sure you get breakfast around the corner at Cafe Seagfredo instead of at the overpriced and light buffet at the restaurant in the hotel.

We recently spent two nights at the Nicolas de Ovando and two nights at the El Beaterio. Both are excellent options for hotels in the Zona Colonial. Both are circa 1500s buildings and Unesco world heritage sites. Both are charming in their own ways. Our reviews of both hotels are below to help those comparison shopping:

El Beaterio:
-Charming public areas and rooms with well preserved historic features. Spotlessly clean. Large room for three of us in a Triple. Comfortable beds. Excellent shower. Air Conditioned. Free wifi. Beautiful, quiet courtyard. Included breakfast was basic.....but more than adequate. They were also happy to make wonderful omelettes upon request. A bit of outside construction noise in the morning; but nothing to worry about (assuming you are up by 09:00). Overall excellent, charming, basic hotel in a great location at an excellent price.

Hostal Nicolas de Ovando:
-Definitely a more upscale hotel.....with a price to match. Wonderful public areas.....swimming pool.....bar....courtyards..... Better location, backing on the Rio Ozama and close to Plaza Espana, the Alcazar and the Royal House museum. Rooms were very quiet and spacious with all the modern conveniences....comfortable beds, soaker tub, separate shower, mini fridge, wifi. However, the rooms do suffer from a lack of old new-world charm ......the kind of 4-5 star modern hotel room you could find anywhere. Nothing wrong with modern hotel rooms with all the bells and whistles. Just not the charm of the smaller, more basic guest rooms in the El Beaterio. The Breakfast was fabulous! Lots of hot and cold choices; fresh fruit, meats, cheeses, croissants....etc. etc. And the open-air seating area was beautiful and charming. The hotel Manager provided us with a personal welcome one morning at breakfast, along with a description of the history of the hotel. Nice touch! Overall, an excellent hotel and enjoyable stay. We were able to get a good price including free breakfast....by booking well in advance. However, the price was still quite a bit higher than the El Beaterio.

Overall, both hotels are excellent. The El Beaterio offers charm and solid value at a great price. Hostal Nicolas offers charm in public areas, modern guest rooms, swimming pool, excellent breakfasts.....but with a much higher price tag commensurate with a 4-5 star hotel.

We stayed nere for two nights a few weeks ago and we really enjoyed it. Lovely rooms (we opted for a colonial style), very good location, excellent service, tasty and varied breakfast, nice views of the port and sea and great looking interior facilities.
WiFi is a bit slow and connection fails from time to time, but nothing to complain too much.

This place is such a value! Right in the Colonial District and they don't miss a trick. Great, very attentive service from the word "go", absolutely stunning 16th century restoration with all the creature comforts. Comfy, well appointed rooms. Great bar, pool and pool table area with wifi and views. And the most killer breakfast you can find in the DR. Great stuff highly recommend!!

stayed here for a business trip in early January. The rooms are spare and on the small side, yet luxurious. Extremely comfortable bed. My room faced the river and flour mill across the way. It was interesting to watch the boat traffic. Breakfast was amazing - huge range and a gastronomic treat. On the downside, the pool was small; pool areas so-so.

Room Tip: Riverside provides an entertaining view of the cruise ships and other traffic on the river as well a...

I'm Platinum in SPG, Diamond in both Hyatt and Hilton, and originally was quite excited at my first experience of Accor brand throught his hotel, but I ended up with disappointed in their service.

Just after I took shower, while I was in the middle of wearing clothes, some hotel staff entered without knocking, saw me half naked, started laughing loud and left the room without apologizing. I was stunned, first at the occasion itself, and second how the hotel is treating the guest especially when it was obviously unacceptable occasion. I immediately complained to the duty manager and she agreed that this should had not happened and would see what she could do with her general manager of the hotel.

The general manager came up with a free drink coupon with a letter. The coupon, however, was cleaned by the housekeeper another day. So I feel that I was humiliated by this hotel even twice.

Rooms are more tourists friendly, not for business travellers. Room with historic structure are interesting, but internet is slow and room is too dark. A/C is strong and a bit noisy, so at night I had to get up to turn off A/C.

Still the hotel has a great location for tourist - heart of colonial town. Very easy access to the historic town and safe to walk around. Lots of restaurants and bars around.

However, I won't return to this hotel again.

Room Tip: Rooms inside to the pool area would be quieter
