We spent 2 separate nights in the Hostel Tierra Plana during our stay in the Dominican Republic and we were satisfied. It is agreeable, safe and nicely decorated. It is very well located in the centre of the colonial zone. Staff was helpful (they prepared us a breakfast at 6 am, they called us a taxi). We had just a little problem with hot water.

On reading other reviews my boyfriend and I were looking forward to staying at Tierra Plana Cool hostel, as other reviewers wrote positive things about their breakfast and fantastic roof terrace. We were staying only one night. When we got there we were shown into our VERY tiny room but it was clean enough. The wifi was working only intermittently. We asked to see the roof terrace, but the guy said it was only open at night (his english was very poor) There was no fridge or kitchen area, and no common area- so they cant really classify themselves as a hostel. There is no dorm option either. In the evening we wanted to go to the roof terrace for some drinks, looking forward to a view of Santo Domingo by night. There was another guy in reception, and he said the roof terrace was still closed. He didnt speak any english, but I think he said it was only open twice a week. So then we went out for some food, and he told us that we had to call him on his mobile phone if we were back after midnight as he would lock the door with a padlock, and we didnt have a key. We found this strange, but didnt plan on getting back that late anyway. So we were back at the hotel at 10.30 pm and the gate was padlocked. Of course, being tourists, we didnt have a working phone. So we had to knock on the door several times for the guy to wake up, and he seemed pretty pissed off. The next day we had breakfast, and was hoping for something authentic to the Dom Rep as one of the other reviews said. All we got was some white toast with butter and one choice of jam, very bad orange juice and small cups of coffee. After 3 cups of coffee they ran out even if we asked for more, as they were so small. After having 4 pieces of toast each, we were still hungry so had an early lunch! The guy in reception, presumably the owner of the place, spoke some english. He let us up onto the roof terrace after breakfast, but there was no bar open and there was a limited view. Nice view of the San Francisco ruins though. This place gets 2 instead of 1 star because it was clean, and also the owner seemed nice and let us keep our stuff in the room 2 hours past check-out time. They really should not call themselves a hostel, and they should have a better breakfast or no breakfast at all. I would prefer a kitchen so I could make something myself, which all hostels I have been to before have had.

The location in the Colonial Zone is good, but the cleanliness of the room was not so great, and was really dark. The breakfast is a nice touch though. The roof terrace is also good to hang out, but could use a makeover. We felt safe at all times-the lady at reception made sure the door was always locked.

Arriving very late at night, I slept just a few hours here, showered, breakfasted, and moved on to the mountains. I left happy and refreshed. The taxi they arranged to pick me up from the airport was as welcoming and professional as could be. The room and bathroom were both spacious, clean, and comfortable, although (expectedly for the price) lacking in amenities like AC (ceiling fan was sufficient) and hot water. I was the only guest for breakfast, and the cook made a special effort to introduce me to Dominican food, letting me taste a few juices. Wifi does not work in the rooms, but the front lounge/breakfast area is nice to hang out in. Building was very secure, and the location was lovely - right across the street from a striking ruin on a quiet, pedestrian street. Taxis were easily found on the corner, where there was also a cafe and bar. The rooftop had a nice view, but it wasn't an inviting space (old furniture, pools of water). There wasn't a bar, hip restaurant, or anything of the sort up there as one of the other reviews mentioned.

Cool, kind of arty place with a nice location, close to city and by some lovely ruins. Rooms are clean and nice and not the ordinary boring hotel room, but looks really good.

Roof terrace is nice!
