“Excellent Tour”

VIP Caribbean Safari Excursion
Reviewed 14 July 2014

This tour takes you to a plantation, cigar factory, and lunch on a floating river barge. The plantation was nice. They showed you how to hand grind coffee beans, raw cocoa beans and had stuff for sale. The cigar factory showed how to roll cigar and also what fake cigars sold on the beach look like. Lobster for lunch was delicious.

We booked the Isla Catalina + Altos de Chavon VIP excursion at the hotel from Vacances Tours Mont-Royal.
A small bus picked us up at the hotel at 7AM in Punta Cana and off we went. The drive there is nice as you can see what life is like in the Dominican Republic. We stoped about an hour later at a little place where you can buy some food or snacks and use the washroom. I would suggest to make sure you eat a plentiful breakfast before you leave because the lunch is much later. Then we drove another 40 minutes and arrived at the casa the Campo marina where we waited for other groups. Then a large catamaran picked us up and off we sailed to Isla Catalina. There is music and drinks on the boat, all you can drink rum and juice or soda, it's way early in the morning but what the heck you're on vacation. They stopped along with all the other boats and let us snorkle at Isla Catalina, the ones who want to snorkle are provided with life vests and all the equipment but I would suggest to bring your own if you have especially for the tuba, I brought my own (I have a compact travel palms which don't take up too much space). The blue of the water is amazing and there are a lot of different species of fish that you can see, the only downside is that you can see that the bottom of the ocean is LITTERED with junk and plastic bags which is really sad to see and you wonder how it gets there as Isla Catalina is a non inhabitated island. Another downside is the amount of time that you have probably 30-40 minutes, I would have liked more time. The ones who don't want to snorkle can swin or stay and party on the boat. Then we are brought on the other side of the island where there is a beach, hut for drinks and washrooms. You can lay on these surfboard looking chairs there are very comfortable. You can rest or swin and for the snorklers out there you can still snorkle, the water is much more shallow but nonetheless still interresting. The beach was quiet and beautiful. Again you have less than an hour. We were then back on the catamaran who brought us back to the Casa de Campo marina where we got off and got onboard the Mississippi for our VIP lunch of rice, beans, salads, lobster and drinks. Having lunch and sailing down the Chavon river with it's lush jungle like appeal, green water and tranquility. Not sure the lobster was at it's best and if it was worth the extra money since I have had better on different excursions but why not splurge. This lasts about 1-1.5 hours. We then docked back at the Casa de Campo marina and got back in our bus and drove to Alto de Chavon which is only a few minutes away. Once we got there we had a very limited time there which is the downside because this place is large and very beautiful but I felt rushed to visit running around trying to snap as many pictures as possible but it's impossible to see everything there in 1 hour. Altos de Chavon is beautiful, impressive and it will bring you to the medieval times of Europe. The views are beautiful. Make you get give a couple of bucks to the donkey owner and have him take a picture of you and his donkey to add to your collection of silly pics. After we went back on the bus and in Higuey we were droped off at a flea market for souvenirs and a potty break and then we were driven back to the hotel. Make sure you don't book an à la carte diner that night unless it's past 8:30 pm because you get in late and you may be exhausted upon your return which we were. All in all it was a great day but I feel they packed in too many things in this excursions not leaving a lot of time to explore Altos de Chavon. Next time I will only book Altos de Chavon and make sure we are there at least half the day.
