This may be a lengthy review but I hope that it gives a balanced view of the hotel and all it has to offer. I have been to the Domincan 5 times now and stayed at 2 other hotels in the Playa Dorada complex (the Victoria, and the Fun Royale / Tropical) and this is by far the best one.
CHECK IN STAFF / RECEPTION:
When we arrived the reception did not appear to have any note of our reservation but they simply gave us a wristband and told us to go and get a drink and give them 20 minutes to allow a maid to clean a room for us - this wasnt a problem for us as we only wanted an ice cold beer in the sun anyway!! After 20 minutes we were then shown to our room. Unfortunately due to noise from other guests we asked to move rooms later that night. Again the reception staff couldnt have been more helpful. There were no available rooms that night but said they would sort it in the morning. Again that was fine by me, afterall I didnt expect to move rooms at 10pm anyway. The next day we asked for a 3rd floor renovated room and we moved rooms without any hassle at all, all with the assistance of a bellboy to carry our cases. The staff on reception speak good english and were very friendly, helpful and polite - even allowing us to use their phone to contact our travel company to confirm departure time pick ups.
The hotel is in the process of renovating all of the old rooms but have started with the rooms closest to the lobby so all of the sea view rooms are still dated. Our first room was on the ground floor of block 11 which was full during our stay which meant that every person coming / going into the block walked past our room door which made it very very noisy. Had we not been moved from this room I think I would have had to sleep on the beach for peace and quiet! The first room was renovated with 2 large king size beds, a large TV and a fridge. However, the second room was AMAZING! It was on the 3rd floor of block 12 and was a suite - it had 2 floors, with a living room / dining room area with balcony and then spiral steps leading up to the bedroom and bathroom and walk in wardrobe! There were 2 TV's, one in the bedroom and one in the living room area. Again there were 2 massive king size beds. Unfortunately there was no fridge but this was no problem really. The only downside to both rooms is that no hair dryers were provided. The air con in both rooms was noisy, of you had it on constant then you get used to it but get cold in the night, you can set it to come on at a certain temperature but we found that this just woke us up when it came on.
The only other thing was that we were only ever given 2 small towels every day. Whilst this is not a major problem it was annoyng having to keep asking for more towels. (I'm desperately trying to find negative things to say - but i'm struggling!)
I am a vegetarian and never expect to eat anything other than salad and pasta when I am in an all inclusive resort. The food here was fabulous, every night there was so much choice and a wide range of different rices and vegetables. The staff in the restaurant are very friendly and always have a smile for you. During the day we ate at the beach bar and the food there was almost the same every day - burgers, hot dogs, pizza, chips, rice and salad. On our last day we ate in the main restaurant for lunch and they had ice cream in there which was lovely! but i suspect if you eat in the main restaurant day and night it would get repetitive.
All of the alcohol is local brand. The soft drinks are 7up and Pepsi which is served from normal 2 litre bottles so this can sometimes be flat if the lid has been left off! All of the bar staff were so friendly, they speak good english and are overjoyed when you speak Spanish even if it is only a little. All of the staff are more than willing to teach you a little Spanish as they are all trying to learn English too. On some days the bar staff even brought drinks to our sun loungers on the beach! During our first week there were a lot of canadian teenagers that seemed to take over the bar making it difficult to get served but some friends of ours gave the bar man a small tip and he then made sure that he served us first all night even if there were loads of people at the bar.
Nothing more to say other than beautiful and clean. The sea was lovely and warm at all times. Sometimes it was a little windy on the beach but if you move up to behind the palm trees it was better up there with only a little breeze.
The sun loungers could maybe do with a bit of an upgrade as some were sagging making them uncomfortable.
The beach vendors are pleasant and chatty but as soon as you say you dont want to buy they do not hassle you. Some of them are genuinely interested in talking to you - dont mistake this for them hassling you to buy! I mean if you walked up and down a beach all day shouting "jewellery" or "massage" wouldnt you be dying to chat to people too???!
The only people that will not take no for an answer are the timeshare people - avoid them at all costs - they look like they are part of hotel staff as they have the hotel logo on their t-shirts.
Absolutely brilliant. They all work long hours and always have a smile on their face despite sometimes having to deal with very stupid people! They do eat in the restaurants but will ask if they can eat with you before plonking themselves down. Juanco and Ninja were my favourites with Angela, Pickatchu and Dominic coming in close second! I found that the ones that were quieter were those that didnt speak much English so again if you take the time to try and speak with them in any language it makes a big difference!
Juanco seemed to go out most nights to Coco Bongo disco in the plaza nearby and I felt as though he was keeping a watchful eye out for us at all times. If you invite the animation staff to come out with you at night they mainly will. A couple of the staff said they only come out if they are invited. They are all extremely respectful and friendly. I cant say enough good things about them. If you interact with them they will ensure you have an amazing time.
COCO BONGO DISCO:
This is the disco in the Plaza nearby. Its open every night but doesnt seem to get busy until between 12pm and 1pm. The animation staff like to take you over there at 11.30pm so it can sometimes be empty but stick it out. You can take one drink in with you from your own hotel too which is a bonus!!
The drinks in there were 300 peso for 2 bottles of beer, however later on in our holiday a Domincan came with us to the bar and when he saw how much we were being charged he shouted at the barman who quickly then charged 50 pesos!!! There is another disco which was more for locals which is outside of the complex next to the "American Casino" this disco is called Coppa. This was really packed all with locals and was definitely an experience for us 2 lone females!!
There is a disco on the hotel site but this was always totally empty and is not promoted by the animation team.
This is a 3 star hotel which is much better than any other 3 star I have ever stayed in in the Domincan. I say this due to the standard of the rooms and the quality of the food.
I will be uploading photos of our massive room soon!
I would recommend this hotel to anyone at all and please feel free to message me with any questions.
I travelled with my friend, we are 2 girls in our 30's if that helps when deciding when to book here or not! I was not expecting to enjoy this hotel half as much as I did.
