My boyfriend and I stayed at Tropical Playa Dorada from Dec 28 - Jan4th 08/09. It was our first time at an all-inclusive together and we had an amazing time. We were in a 2-floor penthouse close to both the beach and buffet area. The room was clean and well decorated with a view of the tennis courts.

The beach was incredible, probably the best part of beach on the whole strip. The shore is cleaned daily and there were plenty of lounge chairs. However, if you want a covered hut make sure you get to the beach early!

The pool area is nice too, but to be honest, the beach is so beautiful you'll probably spend all your time there! The food was good, breakfast is great, and you can eat lunch at the beach at the Beach Bar (hamburgers, chicken, fries etc.) Dinner was good too, but my advice is to book some reservations at the a la carte restaurants (at front desk in the morning) for a couple nights during your stay. The Mexican and Carribean restaurants were my favourite. We were there for New Year's Eve and had a lot of fun. They had a live band and fireworks and champagne at midnight.

The staff is very friendly and helpful, especially the chambermaids who never hesitated to give me an extra towel or pillow. (Tip-not all the rooms have hair dryers so ask front desk for one when you arrive).

We also did a couple of day trips. Definitely check out Cabarete for the kite-surfing and Puerto Plata city. You can go by cab but you can also take the 'bus' (called the 'wa-wa') for much much cheaper....and trust me it's quite an experience :)

Overall, we had a great time and can't wait to go back sometime soon.

The worst hotel I have ever seen in my life. Food is terrible, room's conditions are the worst. Flood on the room, A/C did not work, coack roach on the fridge. Reception employee Ferreira, very mean. Don't ever stay there if you want to have a nice time.

Puerto Plata:Celuisma Tropical Playa Dorada
Date: December 15 to 29
Review :We stayed in an excellent suite , beach front , with a beautifull view of the ocean and the mountains.
The rooms were huge and clean ,they were always done early and the maids did a great job eventhough we were 5 in a 2 bedrom 2 bathroom suite.
What I loved the most was the staff at the hotel, always ready to please you and if what you wanted was not there they would get it for you with a smile. The hotel has beautifull, well kept grounds and there is always plenty to do by the pool or at the beach. The service at the beach was fantastic, you did not have to get off your lounge chair to go to the bar, there was always a friendly waiter getting you a drink. We ate at 3 oft their restaurants and we enjoyed that very much, great food and excellent service, they have a limited menu but there was always something for eveyrone to choose from, even for picky eaters like one of my 3 children, they also served good wine with your meals and a trio to serenade you while you dine. I wil recommend this hotel to families, young adults, and everyone in general that wants to ge ta good feel of what a Dominican holiday is about. Good value for your money too........Marg

We just came back from Celuisma Tropical, and I would rate it as a 2 and a half, not 3 and a half. I would say the biggest problem was the lack of water pressure and hot water, I don't mind a luckwarm shower, but only cold water for a week.....Our room was very small but clean, the building is pretty noisy though, we could hear everyone walking the hallway. The food and drinks where ok, could be better but could be worst. We found the staff , the beach, the water, the tennis courts to be very nice. It's was our first trip to the Dominicain republic and our last, everything is overprice and I really felt like we where in a tourist trap, there is really nothing much to do! So if you like action, night club, to do a little bit of beach and a little bit of sights seeing, Puerto Plata is definitively not for you!

My wife & our 2 children (age 13 & 15) & myself stayed at the Celuisma Tropical Playa Dorada during the week of Christmas and had a great time. We flew with Sun Wing out of Montreal and they served us a glass of champagne on they way to the DR as well a very good hot meal with red wine.

My wife & I stayed at this resort in March 2008 for 2 weeks (without the kids) and we noticed a few small changes but nothing major. We enjoyed our stay in March so much that we decided to bring the kids for Christmas. It's still a great place to stay with or without children. Pick up at the airport was fast and so was the check in. Beware that in addition to your $20US departure tax, they now charge you $10US for an ENTRY TAX. I guess they'll find anyway to get extra money out of us tourists. They didn't have this ENTRY tax in March 2008 and Sun Wing didn't inform us of this.

I won't go into a long description since we posted one back in March 2008 which is very descriptive. While we were there, the resort was improving the beach bar by making it bigger and covered (mostly for the staff that serve the drinks). When we were there in March, the bartender had to work in the blazing sun all day but now it is covered which should help the employees.

The food selection at the buffet was similar, in that, there was always something for everyone (fresh fruits, cold cuts, meats, vegetables etc.) We noticed that they served different types of meats and vegetables compared to March 08. However, the red wine at supper time seemed to be a cheaper wine than our last trip. The main dishes in the buffet were labelled to identify the contents of the tray in Spanish, German, English & French but I think they need a better translator since english & french names of the dishes seemed to not make sense for a few of the trays. They prepared a special Christmas buffet for supper which was fantastik.

The small beach restaurant still serves french fries, hamburgers, big hot dogs, chicken & pasta, lettuce, tomatoes & onions & dressing at lunch which is great because you eat on the beach and don't have to go back to your room to change and eat at the buffet. However, they changed the start time of the beach restaurant from noon to 12:30. They also served pizza but much later in the afternoon around 4:00pm.

We booked 2 separate rooms, one for us and one for the kids and each had 2 double beds. Very convenient!

The beach is still kept clean by Gabriel who picks up all of our plastic cups, straws, garbage etc. Employees in blue numbered shirts still walk around trying to sell jewellery, stuffed monkeys, carvings etc. and you really have to deal and negotiate ferociously with them to get a good deal. As an example, the small monkeys and certain volcanic rock chains that they sell for $18-$20 US can be negotiated down to $7 or $8 but if you go to the plaza which is 2 minutes away, you can get the exact same thing for $3 which is what we did without hagling over a price for 30 minutes.

We would definetely return to this resort as a family as well as a couple.

THE BAD - Very briefly, there were 16 room robberies (money, credit cards, passports, cell phones, lap tops, clothing) in one night; wedding money was stolen from a private beach wedding; intruders were found on second floor balconies; they ran out of beer, RUM, vodka and amaretto; they had no tomato juice or orange juice; there was little or no hot water or water pressure; phone service in the rooms was virtually non-existent; there was little or no lighting on the compound after midnight; security was seriously lacking; the stocked fridges were nowhere to be found; the a/c in the rooms was noisy beyond belief, when it worked; the a la carte restaurants were not open; the gift shops were open sporadically, if at all.

THE GOOD - The food was alright, but was lacking in variety; the staff, for the most part, were very friedly and helpful, though the lack of English or French by the head of security and some front desk staff was a serious deterent to getting satisfactory service; the entertainment was high school amateurish at best, though they (staff) tried very hard; the grounds were well kept and the beach was beautiful.

RATING - VERY POOR to POOR at the best - 1/2 star
