“Honeymoon! very happy”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 September 2012

We had our honeymoon at this resort. It’s not the best resort in the Dominican but it’s worth the price you pay. We had a sea view room, it’s the best room as it’s away from all the night life and entertainment when you need a break. There was always plenty to do, water sports (most are free), pool games, and eat lots of food and always evening entertainment. The beach is nice if you want a break, the vendors try selling you stuff but just say no and they move on, some are pretty friendly, after all they are just trying to earn a living. The trips are great, but book with an American guy in the local plaza, he has his own office called “tours by James” he is half the price of your holiday rep. The trips are great, Paradise Island, the waterfalls, bugging, and horse riding are all fun, just bear in mind they want you to buy things too, but it’s your own free will to say no and they move on. The nice thing about this resort is that everyone knows each other and you get to make lots of friends, the entertainers are very good at remembering you and making you feel welcome. It’s a bit busy at the weekends so just go to breakfast, lunch and dinner a tad earlier to avoid no food left. I liked the buffet more than the other restrants, the buffet does get a bit repetitive in week two of your stay but I think you find that wherever you go. We never got ill we just listened to the advice on what not to eat. You might get a bit of diarrhoea but that’s because of the change of diet, the different oils they cook there food in ect. people who have a great time on holiday dont tend to wright a review but the ones who had a bag experience always will. dont go to the hotel with all the bad comments in your mind other wise you will be picking at everything. take each day as it comes and go with an open mind.

Room Tip: sea view are the best for relaxation and the views are lovely

No hot water. Bugs in bathroom and on counter tops. Must use room key to activate a/c.....only one key per room. The food was terrible, 75% same stuff everyday. Exterior buildings in need of major repairs, especially around the pool area. Surprised to see staff socializing with female guests, ie. horseplay in the pool. We all had diarrhea for more than 2 days. Beach not groomed on a regular basis. Resort heavily polulated by the locals on weekends. Fitness, archery and casino closed. More like a older 3 star resort.

Bad service, no respect from the staff. All they want is guests’ money. The beach isn’t clean and the sea is dirty. Something or somebody is living in the sea that bites tourists. I was bitten by something in there twice and stated to develop allergy or something. Emergency service did not know what it was but they charged my insurance company $100 for a 7 minute consultation + medications. They couldn’t even understand English. Food is terrible. The variety is very limited to potatoes, rice, beef and chicken and some cheese. There are also some cookies but if you eat them you will develop stomach disease. Most of guests in the hotel are the local people. There is no respect from them at all. It seems like the hotel’s overall service, entertainment (everything in Spanish) and food is created for the locals only. It is very cheap for them to stay in the hotel, about $15 a night. so foreigners just overpay huge $$$ for cheap service. Basically foreigners have no right of voice there. If you are disagree with something police will be involved and you will face even more troubles. So don’t take chances. Decision is yours. Have a nice vacation.

Room Tip: no good rooms available, bees will be your regular guests. Sprays don't help.

Maid helped herself to my cash which was left in my suitcase, stupidly i left it unlocked whilst going for breakfast, hotel manager, very rude and un accomadating, casino was a complete rip off and would rather cut of my own leg than go back there, this holiday has put me off the Dominican republic completely and will never visit the island again, once was enough!!

Room Tip: Go top a different hotel !!

We stayed at Grand Paradise when we went to Playa Dorada this summer.

Overall it wasn't a bad experience, but I would not classify the resort as a 4 star.
Rooms were average, I'd equate them to a motel anywhere in the US or Canada. Basic Bed, LCD TV but poor tv reception. We had higher expectations given its a 4 star resort.

Food was bland at the buffet - If you are going, take your own spices and ask the grill to mix them in to your specification for breakfast/lunch/dinner.

There were 2 a la carte restaurants - one was a 'steak house'. The food here was okay. For lunch you could go in and get pizza, chicken or burgers. THey were average, but better than the buffet. For dinner I'd recommend going here frequently.

There was also an Italian restaurant, the food was okay - better than buffet, but equivalent of Italian food from your grocers freezer aisle. I ended up with food poisoning and spent a day in the room after eating at the Italian restuarant, and discovered that during that week everyone who went ended up with food poisoning of some sort.

Hot Tub/Jacuzzi was just a Jacuzzi and not Hot. Pool was okay, kiddie pool was okay - its a pool, its cleaned every morning - so they met basic requirements. Beach was nice and long, spend a lot of your time here. However, be ready for rough waters as it sits on the Atlantic, not Caribbean.

Cleaning staff was great, some of the restaurant staff were good, lots of 'time share' types around this venue, so be ready to get trapped. The beaches are public property, so you will be met with a lot of local vendors and excursion staff. If you plan on doing excursions, buy from the staff on the beach, you'll pay 1/3 of the regular price for the same excursion. The rest of the staff left us with a 'we're better than you' attitude. We have similar skin tone to the locals, and they were generally upset that we didn't speak spanish, despite us being Canadians with no Spanish experience.

Make sure to go into the city - you can pay $60 for a cabbie/tour guide for the day and see the actual city and experience it. They'll show you all the sites and show you how the locals live. And - $60 is the sticker price, they can be talked down to $20-30.

If you're going with friends, or as a couple (unmarried) looking for fun - its not a bad resort at all and worth visiting. As a young couple, or as a family - I don't recommend it. I won't be returning to this resort.

Room Tip: Our room was "garden view" but was actually pool side. Every night there is something goi...

This was the best holiday I've ever had.. Just to start off with..

Holiday break down:

1. Rooms and cleanliness= very good maids come everyday.

2. Beach and views= amazing, we had a pool view and could also see beach.

3. Staff and entertainment= hard working and always polite.. If you get to know the entertainment team they are fantastic and so funny!

4. Food= very nice 2 Resturants and a main buffet. Large variety and they have different country themed nights.
Remember if you do get ill your on holiday not in England!

5. Locals and beach sellers= locals are a bit annoying trying to steal the lime light however they are friendly and it is their country too. Beach sellers are trying to make a living as they are not rich.. Don't be rude because there not rude to you.

6. Music= yes music can be quite loud however music is stopped at 11pm also the entertainment is very good always something going on.

7. Kids= one little pool for kids, Jaccuzi, and the big pool has a shallow end. Kids club is very good, the ladies go out of there way to be friendly and helpfull. My nephew loved the kids club and everybody loved him.

8. Day trips= Do not book with Thomas cook they are double priced! Go to Sandra on the beach she will give you a good price and you are guranteed to have a good day out.

9. Shopping= take a 2 min walk down to the plaza they have a good variety of shops (considering as its a small town) shop in the hotel is ok aswel.

10. Have an amazing holiday if you have booked here, remember the names pepe, chikky and big joe! They made my holiday so much fun.

it's a terrible place, bad food, no respect from staff to tourists, bad service, staff don't speak English, not a safe place at all, our friends had criminal situation in downtown. On weekends local people come to hotel and it becomes a disaster on the beach and in pool. Huge lines up in canteen. Emergency service $100 for 7 minute consultation. This hotel is for locals mostly, 90% of local residents. People complain and leave disappointed. It will be waste of your time and money. Gym has equipment from back 70-80s, no fan there, small room only. There is something more we noticed. The sea bites! We had huge red spots on bodies after the bites. Emergency service that charged $100 don't know what it was.
