I want to thank Vilma C. Beard the Guest Service Manager/Wedding Coordinator for arranging a special surprise of petals and an amazing towel display for my girlfriend. It's little surprises like these that are priceless! Thank you so much!!!

Just returned form a week with my wife and 16 year old son. I have travelled extensively and have never wrote a review on any resort but felt this experience had to be shared. I am from south western Ontario, Canada and have paid considerably more for one week all inclusive vacations that have also been very good. But... the value of the VH Gran Ventana Resort is unparalleled. The rooms are very clean and have all the amenities you need. The resort is also very clean and well laid out. The staff is friendly and always eager to make sure you are having a good time. There are bars located at every common area so you never have to go to far to find a drink. The pools are extraordinary - one for people looking to have fun featuring daily activities and one in a quiet area where you could relax and read a book. The nightly entertainment was typical of what you find at resorts in the Caribbean, which is generally loud and not my style. But, they had a good mix of comedy related themes and a magic show that we enjoyed. They brought in a rhythm and blues band from Wisconsin called "The Jimmy's", that played 2 of the nights during our stay. They were unbelievable! So much so that we bought 2 of their CD's. My wife, son and I literally danced the night away and the crowd (including the staff) loved every minute of their performance.

The food was 5 star! The buffet had all everything you could ask for and never too much so anything sat out for more than a few minutes.. A good selection of every meat dish, great salad bar, fruit and smoothie station, breads, desserts. and always fresh pasta. Plus, they are very conscience of their guests - mainly Canadians and Americans. The buffet always had a mix of comfort foods we all enjoy at home such as shepherds pie, southern fried chicken, stews, lasagna, hamburgs and hotdogs, etc. There were three ala carts and they were all amazing.

The beach was well kept and very clean. There were always enough lounge chairs and a bar only steps away. Puerto Plata is a bit on the windy side but when it`s 35 degrees in the middle of the day, it`s a welcome breeze.

The Playa Dorada Golf Course is a walk across the street from the front entrance of the resort and is world class. It`s a bit pricey but worth it if you like to golf! their is also a shopping plaza adjacent to the resort that had everything in the way of souvenirs and the vendors are not overly aggressive so you can browse without being berated.

There is absolutely nothing negative I can say about the VH Gran Vantana. We have stayed at the Iberostar in Pueti Plata and it was also very good but not I can honestly say this place is better, for less money. We would go back in a heartbeat! If you are from Canada and want good value for around a thousand dollars per person, you will never find a resort better than this! Five stars all the way!!!

Room Tip: Pool view rooms on the 3rd floor are great.

We spent 14 wonderful days. Loved the resort and the staff. We had rooms by the quiet pool
It was a family vacation 10 the of us 1st wk & 12 2nd wk.
The Bartenders working by the quiet pool are great and make the vacation. Jackie was a lot of fun and made the VH Gran Ventana Beach resort a great place to spend with friends and family
Ramirez came on at night he to made the bar @ Ventana Beach a great place
I found that most of the staff went out of thier way to make the stay great
Loved the holiday and looking forward to returning for another vacation for more fun and relaxation.
Would like to see the gym equipment updated & more weights

Great time! Just got home yesterday (Mar 22, 2014) We were concerned after reading some negative reviews....but now that we have been we realize the saying "you can't please them all" is true. The staff is great, the resort is very clean, and the food was FANTASTIC!!! They have a 24 hour self serve HOT coffee/tea/hot chocolate station (if you are of the lazy generation you won't enjoy this...but we loved it).
The beach is well maintained (very noticeable if you walk along beach to other resorts).
Staff are helpful and don't hang around looking for tips....though you should really tip they work HARD and get paid very little.
If you are hoping to eat at the a la carte restaurants book early as they fill up quickly and you may miss your opportunity to try some great food. We heard many say the a la carte were serving the same food as the buffet but this was not true. They had great menu options (steak, lobster, pasta) and the quality was top notch.
Played volleyball daily, drinks a little strong at times but adjusted upon request :) .
Plenty of pool chairs, no waiting at restaurants for seating, small resort which meant limited walking and more time for relaxing!!!
Don't waste your money on catamaran excursion...3 hour bus ride one way...so 6 hours wasted on a bus with no bathroom!!!!
Recommendations to resort staff/management:
1. safe should be included with cost of room....we all need it, we have return tickets and passports to keep safe!!
2. Iron/ironing board should be included with room....damp climate leads to wrinkled clothes.
3. There is a lot of un used wall space in rooms....throw some hooks up on the walls to allow guests to hang more things since there is no dresser and limited hanging space in closet.
Had a blast would recommend to anyone who asked. For those who bash this place....your expectations are unrealistic and I wish you luck in your search of a good holiday destination.

My wife and I stayed at Gran Ventana 3/13-3/20 along with another couple. We were very impressed with the check in process to start off. We arrived around 2pm and we're immediately given cool towels and a welcome frozen drink. After a few minutes the resort representative came back with our all-inclusive wrist bands and room keys as well as a pre-made reservation on our behalf for one of the 3 ala carte restaurants. We were in a junior suite which was spacious, clean and had a large balcony with a partial ocean view. The stocked mini bar was a nice touch with a Pepsi, 7-up, bottled water and 2 beers which they re-stocked each day. The buffets were pretty good, didn't change much but hit the spot. I would recommend the egg station where they will make you and omelet with whatever you want In it ( they have stuff there but you can bring pretty much anything from the buffet and they will add it in). They also have a fresh smoothie station that was a great morning treat. The a-la carte restaurants were above
Average, with the Italian and Octopus being the better of the 3. The pool can get pretty crowded but for the most part if you want a chair you can find one, possibly with the exception of Saturdays which is a big day for check ins. The beach itself was great, there are very limited amounts of huts for use but you have to get there very early to claim them. The other thing that can become a bit annoying are the vendors. They are all licensed to be there by the beach association so it's not really a knock on the resort. They don't bother you when you're in the water and most of them will go away with a polite no thank you. We actually purchased a couple of things while there, most are easy going enough but it's something that some people may want to avoid by just taking a dip in the ocean then retreating to the poolside at the resort. The entertainment was on par with a lot of places I've been to. I'd keep the kids away from the ideal couple challenge, but if your an adult I would definitely take the time to watch it. Overall the staff was excellent and friendly, bartenders were friendly and eager to please. We did book 2 excursions through expedia partner blue travel services, a city tour of puerto plata and the mega extreme which included zip line, horseback riding and sliding and jumping through the 27 waterfalls (12 of them). I'd recommend both as the city tour highlights the Brugal rum factory ( very cheap bottles), an amber and laromite museum/factory, as well as a driving tour through puerto plata and a cable car to the top of mt Isabel. The mega extreme is a can't miss and includes lunch. Overall the resort is a place I'd return to. The biggest con that I saw was the lack of variety in the buffets day to day and the lack of a few more a-la carte restaurants.
