“Great Family Vacation”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 April 2014

I really followed the reviews before arriving myself. Yes it's a 4 star resort not L.A. or the Ritz Carlton but definitely fantastic and you get what you pay for! Loved all 3 restaurants, the grouper at the Italian was excellent! Snorkeling off the beach is great (bring your own snorkels and borrow the fins from the resort). We never made it to Paradise Island which I hear is a 2 hour drive but beachside snorkeling definitely made me happy. I would say my biggest complaint is all the old people who wake up at 5 am to "mark their umbrella" on the beach. Those same people are rude and short with the beach vendors who are trying to make a living. Amanda gave me and my husband lovely massages on the beach, Lily gave me a pedicure and Neury booked us a fun excursion to the waterfalls and horseback riding for my daughters on the beach. The staff are friendly, exceptional and constantly working to keep the place looking pristine! The rooms are so clean (Jr Suite facing the beach). Fun entertainment every night. I would like less American style food at the buffet but there is something for every one. The grounds are excellent but please get some medicine for those cats eyes. The drinks are pre-made syrup like mixes so I would have loved more fresh juice drinks. But definitely, it was worth it, family LOVED it!

Room Tip: Bring your own snorkels and borrow fins from resort. Get a room facing the beach and not the pool. I...

Came here twice...2012 and 2013. The place is clean which is very important to me. The staff is friendly. The food and drinks are average. The beach is nice; clear and calm. It is one of the better one along that strip.

First trip to Puerta Plata have been going to Punta Cana every year and had no complaints there either. We were very fortunate to get a second trip south in a month so decided on VH Ventenna to celebrate ours friends 35 wedding anniversary. The over all write ups on the resort we not disappointing. Rooms, staff were top notch and I have stayed at a few 5 star in my travels. It is a small resort with everything centrally located and easy to get from one place to another. Must get up early to claim and beach hut or pool chairs but there is not a resort that I have been at that this does not happen and it doesn't bother me because im an early riser anyway and didn't go away to spend most of the morning in bed. So over all I would certainly go back. The only down fall is the amount of vendors on the beach worse I ever seen at one resort and yes I know that's how they make a living. But one gets tired of saving no thank-you after a while.

Good place, not too big a hotel, lots of animation. This hotel is a 4 star, not a 4-1/2 that some sites will mention
Food is good and up to par to a 4 star. The buffet has lots of variety but repetitious at times. Snack bar by the beach is good, with chicken, pizza, hamburgers, and fries. Food is well cooked, and hot
We tried only the italian restaurant as all other were booked. Bummer, You need to book your restaurants from day one in the older building, unless you don't mind eating at 22h00. Italian was good, not great. Only place we could have shrimp, and they were all out!!!!.
Rooms are clean, although they could use some freshening up. And we were in the newer section where there was all the animation. If you want quiet, you may want to reserve in the older building, which has no animation, and has a quiet pool.
Animation staff is wonderful... Every night is different theme night, so different shows, if you like to party, you will certainly have fun.
Beach is ok, but is not like Riv Maya, although still quite clean.
Would go back.

Great weather, excellent staff, good food and lots of happy guests. This is a very nice resort, not too big, not too small. It is a perfect place to relax. We talked with many people that have been coming back to this resort many times ( one gentleman was on his 17th).
The resort is a little older but well maintained. The staff all seemed genuinely friendly and made the effort to make sure we had a good vacation. The food was, for the most part, very good. There was a good assortment and selection. The buffet is smaller is smaller than we are used to, but well run. Items were not sitting too long and it all seemed well prepared. Octopus was our favorite a la carte (the mofungo was fantastic.
Although we stayed mainly at the pool, which you needed to get up early to secure a shaded spot, there were always available loungers in the sunny spots. We walked the beach daily, which is very nice. There are lots of loungers, but they fill quickly. I would strongly recommend water shoes when going in the water as we spoke to a number of people that walked too close to the coral and stepped on an urchin (very painful and should have medical attention).
The entertainment team was good and tried hard to get people up. Coca Cola is hilarious. The shows were what one would expect. A lot of effort went into them, but don't expect Vegas. We went to most and enjoyed them. I was never one for magicians, but the one that was here was really good,
Go with an open mind and have a good time.

First off this was a very good vacation. Of course there are pros and cons for this resort. Lets start with the pros. The resort is SO clean. I am a stickler for the rooms looking like they do online and these one did. The maids come everyday and put roses on the bed and are very accommodating. The food buffet was just average. This is like a cruise but on land. They have 3 hour times for each meals with snacks in between. Some of the food is exotic but you have to be brave to try new food in a different country. I wasn't. DO NOT drink the water except the ones they say you can. E beach is very nice and clean unlike some of the other beaches as you walk down a ways. The entertainers try very hard to get everyone involved and are quite funny but can sometimes be a little inappropriate especially in the night time skits. The Italian restaurant they have on the resort was delicious! We would have gone every night if you are allowed but can only go once during the week. The cons are that if you even want to get any shade at the pool you legit have to wake up at 4am to go out and put towels on chairs that have an umbrella. And don't even dare to move people's because there will be a fight. Same with the cabanas down in the beach. Have to get up super early to get one and chairs. The beach is good and the free snorkeling over the reef was so cool. Ere are vendors that come up to you every 5 minutes but if you just say no they go away. The food buffet can become repetitive. You have to make reservations for e separate restaurants on the resort and they fill up very fast. We had to have a 9 o'clock seating but its vacation so we didn't might. They also do not have wifi except by the pool and they is not even consistent. You can buy a wifi password which is a little better and worth it if you don't stay off social media. Overall the trip was good but some tips if you are going. BRING your own thermos or mug to have the drinks put in. They only hand wash the cups and it is very quickly...gross. Also make sure you bring your own sun tan lotion they will charge like $23.00 for one there. Lastly bring $1.00 for tips. The maids like there tips upfront and ask which day they have off so you can give it to your own personal maids for your room. Would maybe come again but need to stay longer then 5 days.

We just returned home from the Gran Ventana in Puerto Plata.(March 30-April 6 2014) We went with our two grown children and our two best friends. Upon arrival we requested to have rooms close together. The staff at check-in were very accommodating. We were all in the same building and on the same floor. We were in the quiet section which was great for sleeping but the resort is not too big to get around so we spent our days at the busy pool and the beach. The busy pool has ongoing activities all day. The activities staff are sooo much fun. Blondie was definitely one of our favourites. She was always smiling and making sure we were happy. My family, she called us. Zumba in the pool daily was a blast. We rented a taxi at the front desk for one day. It was great and highly recommended. Our driver, James Bond, was very informative and patient. He took us to Puerto Plata to see some of the main sights. Brugal Rum factory, cigar making, church tour, fort tour, shopping. We agreed on a price before we left and he stuck to it. One of the days we wanted to go on the Catamaran, but didn't want to pay a huge price so we booked it with Hector on the beach. You give them a down payment and don't pay the rest until you are getting on the boat. The day we were booked to go it was very windy and we weren't feeling good about going, but were a little afraid we would lose the money we put down. Hector was very professional and cancelled the boat that day and we went the next day instead. It was a great day at Sosua Beach. I highly recommend that you don't go if you are even a little hung over. We watched a few people get very ill, even though Hector recommended that they wait and go another day. Just saying the guys on the beach can be trusted...The beach vendors are persistent but very polite. If you tell them you don't want to buy anything, they are good with that.. This was our fifth time to the Dominican Republic and each time we have found the people to be so very nice and full of fun. You wont go hungry at this resort either. The ala carte restaurants are great and the buffets have a big variety. The beach grill has great pizza and wings. Anyone who complains about this resort would likely complain anywhere. For the value this place is wonderful. It is extremely clean and the grounds are well kept. We had trouble with the ceiling fan in our room and were going to the front desk to tell them after breakfast one morning. When we returned to our room the maintenance man was there installing a new one. We didn't get a chance to tell them about it, the maid cleaning our room beat us to it...Great service. if a great view is important to you, I would recommend that you request that upon booking. Some of the balconies face the road coming in. We don't spend a lot of time in the rooms so we didn't care about that. In my opinion this is a great place to visit. Also as experienced travellers we believe a holiday is what you make of it...Some people expect the sky and others are just constant complainers. We go to relax and have fun with our family and friends. We had a blast!!!!!!

Room Tip: if you want quiet, request near the quiet pool or if you want to party request near the busy pool...
