I stayed at the Gran Ventana with my family for two weeks and flew back Tuesday. We all had a fantastic time and thought that the hotel and facilities were lovely, the hotel had real character, food was lovely I would recommend booking up to eat in all the restaurants especially Ocean Grill, which was located right on the beach.
We managed to get our sunbeds round the pool each day however by 7.30am they were all occupied. We found it nice to spend the morning round the pool and then spend a cooler afternoon on the breezy and refreshing beach.
Take advantage of the sister hotel, Victoria Golf which is 5 minutes down the road. It has beautiful views and we really liked the waterfall jacuzzi in the Quiet pool. We only visited twice on our last week and would definately have spent more time there if we had had more time! V.peaceful!
We bought some lovely souvenirs at the nearby shopping plaza however I would suggest if you don't want to get badgered too much from locals trying to get you into their restaurants and shops, you shop during the day and not at night! We gave up on our evening shopping spree and re-visited during the day at leisure.
This holiday was amazing, all 5 of us enjoyed every minute.... in fact we are already looking to book up again and stay at Victoria Golf next year.
Enjoy x

Stopped at the Gran 'Glasgow' Ventana first two weeks in July.
Pre requisite to be from north of the border and sport a tattoo! Agree that it is not a four star hotel but i did not pay four star prices!
Food was very good and choice varied during the stay. We enjoyed all the A la carte restaurants spending our 25th wed anniversary night at the beach restaurant . Was given a very funny rendition of 'Happy Anniversarararary to you' from the staff.
Rooms were fine. No problems encountered . Hot water constant, Beds ok . We were in Soanna block third floor overlooking pool bar. No noise concerns either.
Pool was very crowded and no breeze so we chose to use the beach. This decision allowed us the added luxury of not getting up till 7.00am to get a sunbed / umbrella!!!
The beach had a cooling breeze from lunch time onwards which we found delightful. We enjoyed early morning walks to the left toward the orange market where after 10 minutes you were on a beach to yourself with crystal clear water. We were told that timeshare touts were a nuisance during the main part of the day there.
I am still surprised that people say the beach vendors on Ventana beach were intrusive.
A smile and no thank you was all that was needed for them to pass you by.
The fish by the beach coral were great so snorkelling is a must.
We did three trips, Outback Safari (informative, great scenery and nice boogie bording at the end), Catamaran ( good snorkelling and usual boat trip fare)and we went up in the Helicopter as an anniversary treat. Cancelled twice by the helidosa people for a mechanical prob and weather but this added to the thrill! Fabulous when we got up. Just the two of us and 20 mins of fun.
Also had the added bonus of a sun halo. Evidently a phenomenom rarely seen that spooked tha hotel staff . see photos
Can't comment on the entertainment as we did not really watch or listen to it but it appeared to be as commented previously. A bit British holiday camp stuff for me. Not what i go abroad for but needed for the younger children.
Staff were always polite and took great delight in showing of the hotel to its best whenever opportunity arose.
All in all we had a great time and would recommend this hotel to the package tourist. Got the best tan i ever had and added a stone in weight!
Enjoy what represents good value for money!

Stayed at the Gran Ventana between 7th - 17 July 2009, booked a good internet deal with Thomson back in March. We usually go to Punta Cana, but this year opted for the North Coast. The resort itself is nice although small compared to other resorts we've been to in the Caribbeans. The main pool is very small and therefore looked crowded the whole time and full of screaming children. But we go to the caribeeans for the beach and therefore were not that bothered, although my partner likes to swim in the pool every now and then, but this was impossible due to the size of the pool. The beach was great, the first days we had no problems in finding shaded chairs, but after that we had to resort to sit under the trees as all the other chairs were "reserved" with towels by people who only showed their faces in the afternoon for an hour or so. Yes, there are vendors, but a polite no thank you and they will not bother you. REstaurant food was ok, not a big selection at the buffet, some evenings were better than others, but you won't starve! We tried the Grill on the beach one evening and it was very good, one of the best fillets I've ever had! Room: a few issues when we checked in (patio door wouldn't close thus disabling the A/C, toilet wouldn't stop flushing, and the bathroom door was stuck and therefore was half open). Called Reception and within 15 minutes 2 maintenance guys were in our room and fixed everything: very impressed! I also appreciated the courtesy call after maintenance had been asking if we needed anything else. Overall it was a relaxing holiday and the weather, apart from 1 day of rain, was great. However, it is not a 4 star resort as stated on the brochure, more a 3 star, but staff is very good and they do make a difference. I wouldn't recommend this resort to couples or young adults as it is clearly a family hotel and I will not return to the North Coast. The east/ south coast is so much better and more "caribbean"...

We went to the gran ventana in feb. When we arrived, we had a room right beside the bar of the other resort. The music started at 11:00 PM and not stoped before 6 AM. We've been finally moved 2 days after our arrival(we lost two days). But after that, the room was really good, clean place and good services. The only think is the show in the night is not really professionnal. The entertainment is good. No wave in this area but you can do a lot of snorkeling right in the front of the beach, really nice fish.

We stayed at the Gran Ventana from the 13/7/09-27/7/09 and had a fantastic holiday. Yes the hotel is a little dated in places, but people have to accept you are visiting a developing country. We were in the Catalina Block. Our room was clean and spacious. The bathroom was larger than expected and very clean. On arrival we had a problem with our patio door not closing, but we reported it and it was fixed within the hour. The maid service every day was excellent. One tip is to remove the drinks from the mini bar every day in order to get it restocked.

The hotel grounds were lovely. Very green with loads of trees. The beach was only a couple of hundred yards from the main pool. Yes there are sellers on the beach, but a give them a firm 'no' and they went away. From reading previous reviews there were actually less sellers than we expected there to be. There was always a strong breeze on the beach, but this gave a welcome respite to the heat. The sea was quite rough, so we tended to go at low tide, when the sea was much calmer, and it was excellent for snorkelling. Our rep did warn us of the sea urchins and so we always wore shoes in the sea.

The pool was very clean. It was cleaned thouroughly every morning, and again in the afternoon. The animation team work very hard, and very long hours. They are not professional entertainers, but did a good job considering. They organise games round the pool during the day, and although ask people to join in there is no pressure. There was a childrens disco every evening which our two (aged 10 & 7) loved. After that the animation team invited people up to dance and then there was some kind of show each evening. Again the shows weren't fantastic, but they were a good laugh. As our rep reminded us, we weren't in Las Vegas! There is a kids club, which our 7 year old went to some days and really enjoyed. The only down side was you did have to get up early in order to get sunbeds and parasols around the pool. However I think this is the same in many places. What was very annoying was people who would claim their beds and then disappear for the morning, returning about 3pm, and their sunbeds had been unoccupied all morning. You always get some selfish people though.

The food was really good. We mainly ate in the buffet, as our children didn't like the a la carte restaurants. There was always a very good selection of food, and we could always find something. The food was hot and some of it is freshly cooked to order. The drinks were fine, and the tea & coffee cart around the pool was a great idea. Yes the drinks are served in plastic glasses and mugs around the pool, but surely that is for safety? We always has glasses and proper cups in the restaurant.

We did the Ocean World trip, swimming with the dolphins and the sea lion encounter, which was amazing and we would thouroughly recommend it. We also did the Outback Safari which was also really good.

Overall we had a fantastic holiday. We would return, and recommend it, especially for the price. I think some people expect too much for the price they are paying especially when visiting developing countries. The hotel was clean, the staff were friendy and helpful, the food was good, and we had a brilliant time.
