“costa del carribean”
Reviewed 11 August 2009

Probably the worst hotel in the carribean, no family rooms available when we arrived so the family was not together as booked for the first night. Dirty cups that smelt of last quests drinks , some drinks still had beach sand left in , most of hotel ill , pools filthy , shoes stolen from balcony , noise! noise ! noise!, no room by pool by 6a.m every day.
If you've booked looking for peace and quite try to transfer to the sister hotel the victoria ( its not quite by the sea , but at least its quite ), if you haven't booked here yet then try somewhere else

I have just returned from Puerto Plata where I had booked to stay at the Gran Ventana with my Husband, an 8yr old and a 15yr old. I expected 4*+ accommodation as promised in the brochure. This was not my experience of 4*+ accommodation. The room was dirty, damp, the curtains were ripped and the air conditioning did not work. When we complained to the staff about the room they fobbed us off. The 'minibar' consisted of a warm fridge with 1 beer, 1 pepsi and a bottle of water. You have to be up at 5am to get a sunbed otherwise when you go to the pool EVERY sunbed had a towel on. The staff are brusk and unfriendly and the restaurants had no air conditioning working either. It was so bad that we refused to stay and were transferred to the sister hotel 'Victoria' which was amazing. The evening entertainment was THE SAME THING EVERY NIGHT and it was dire. IF YOU THINK THIS IS GOING TO BE LUXURY YOU WILL BE DISSAPOINTED. It may have been a good hotel in the past but it certainly isn't now!! I have stayed in better 3* accommodation! and paid alot less for it!!

When we arrived it reminded us of a holiday camp we were expecting something very special my husband took me for my 50th birthday we were very disapointed, We both had tummy upsets and cramps going to the toilet we felt ill,my husband is only just feeling better and we have been back a weekThe pool looked so inviting and seemed ok at first but it was getting warmer and warmer and did not seem right being that warm so we decided not to go in any more [it was a haven for germs] and when you sat at the swim up bar water was getting splashed into your drinks with the volleyball net not being far from the bar and other ball games being played around the bar.I agree about the plastic cups they were never washed only rinsed and the ice was served out of a sink they just kept filling the sink up with ice also a haven for germs. There was a good choice of food but the a la carte restaurants well i was not impressed. We would have gone to the plaza a lot more if we had not been hassled by the people there as soon as you walked out the hotel complex you were hassled which made you feel very uncomfortable, they just need to leave people alone and we would spend more.At nights the entertainment was just for children nothing for adults we were so bored even the cocktails were not appertising they never looked nice served in plastic glasses and the beer and wine was undrinkable. We were too uncomfortable to walk to plaza at night bad lighting and offered anything you wanted and i mean anything! Oh and the gym well 1 bike 1 treadmill and a workbench it smelled awful! We would recommend you do 2 trips while in Dominican and one is the Monster safari we really enjoyed it well worth doing and the snorkeling was fantastic on the catamaran trip.

my family and i stayed at the gran ventana for two weeks in july, i think this is one of the very few times that i could not find one single fault with a holiday hotel, the hotel was kept so clean you could have eaten your meals off the paths in the hotel, the staff washed all the paths in the complex at least every day if not twice a day, the staff were always smiling and ever helpful, when it comes to meal times again the staff could not do enough to assist you, and in 14 days i never eat the same meal twice, the choice on offer was incredible, if there is to be one complaint then it has to be the guests themselves, if you are not prepared to get out of bed at five thirty in the morning, then you can kiss goodbye to a sunbed wether poolside or on the beach. with regards to the beach this likewise is kept equally as clean as the hotel complex, there are staff out sweeping and clening the beach from six in the morning, before leaving i read on trip advisor thatbeach sellers were a nusiance, but we found them to be friendly and amiable and if you said no thank you then they would be on their way, we done several trips while on holiday, a swim with the dolphins is a definite must, as is the jungle safari, a fantastic day out, a great chance to see the country and how the locals live a highlight of the holiday, if you are going to go on trips i would seriously advise you book with one of the vender on the beach (louis in particular), we booked three excursions with him and saved nearly £400 in comparison to the thompson rep prices, a mighty saving. All in all a absolutely fantastic vacation at a truly fantastic hotel

My husband & I spent a weekend at the Grand Ventana, we celebrated our 21st anniversary. the place is relaxing when you want to sleep and very festive when you want to have fun. We really had a good time here. My husband & I are planning to go back next year with the whole family.

As a veteran of many Dominican campaigns I feel I can rate this hotel against others in the area.

If you want GREAT food, even the main restuarant is 4.5 star, the A La Cartes only slightly if any better, then this is a perfect hotel for you.

All rooms and public areas are spotless, and all staff are the friendliest we have come across ( except entertainment staff).

Beach location is ideal, although better to swin 50yards left or right of hotel due to an offshore reef directly outside. Buy ALL your tours from Luis on the beach, I have used him for 6 years now, he is 100% reliable and half the price of the reps tours, tell him you are a friend of 3 lions.

Close to shopping plaza ( 100yards), I think you will need it ( see later)

Now the bad news... If you actually want entertainment then this is NOT the place for you!! On a good night it is DIRE on a bad night it is PATHETIC!!. The entertainment staff are either lazy, drunk or molesting teenage girls!, but have no idea how to actually entertain, most shows are " home made" with a couple of outside shows brought in each week. ( they are the dire nights!). If I were to say that the best nights were the Karaoke nights then that sums it up, and I loathe and detest Karaoke!!!. Best advice is to take a good book, some knitting or crossword puzzles if you intend to stay in at nights, you can go to the plaza ( after 11.00pm as it is quiet before) and have a drink in some of the bars down there, but be warned it isn't exactly bouncing down there either. Also where the local bottled beers have been approx £1.20-£1.50 in the past , you are now looking at £2.50 ish this year, given that the $ and the peso are not as valuable this year I suggest you take a bit more spare cash.

I would also suggest a small tip to the waiters in the restuarants, both water boys and wine waiters appear much more readily if you have given them a couple of $ every few days or so

All in all 7 out of 10, but could so easily be a 9 with better entertainment
