“Fantastic hotel, will definitely return and would recommend”
Reviewed 9 March 2010

I travelled with my husband and brother to the Gran Ventana on the 19th September 2009 for two weeks. After reading loads of reviews which were less than complimentary we were looking forward to the holiday as much as we would look forward to a bout of toothache. However, our worries were soon put aside after our first 24 hours in the hotel.

We found the choice of food at the buffet restaurant was far superior to other places we have visited on an all inclusive basis, including a previous trip to a 5* resort in the Maldives. The a la carte restaurants were the best we have come across anywhere on our travels and the staff went the extra mile allowing us to order as much as we wanted on each of our visits. My husband can be a little fussy where food is concerned and he thoroughly enjoyed meals in all of the restaurants. Alcoholic and soft drinks flowed freely in all restaurants.

The bar staff were great, in particular the main man at the swim up pool bar, he would always deliver me my ‘usual’ as soon as I perched myself on a bar stool. We had no great issues concerning people hogging sun beds and then not using them. The management seemed to handle this very well.

There is plenty to do in the hotel if you want to do anything, however my preference is just to read a book and take in the action happening around me. There was always some game or other happening around the pool and whist not being a participant myself, it was still fun to watch. The entertainment staff were great and I particularly enjoyed the dance routine at the pool each day. These guys have so much energy and are very friendly, in particular, Jhonny, Sexy Face, Mini Me, Gleny and Ratata.

The evening entertainment was ok, some nights were great others were not, but there is something for everyone. In particular, the show that has all of the entertainment team taking part had us all in fits of laughter and the Michael Jackson impersonator is excellent too. The mini disco is fun for youngsters and they also seemed to enjoy the twice weekly movie night too which was on before the main entertainment.

We didn’t use the quiet pool and I did not use the beach, however my husband and brother both enjoyed the beach. My husband hates the sellers on the beach, however he said these guys did not pester him.

The rooms were clean, however people have complained on this site of a damp smell. This is the 3rd hotel we have stayed in at in the Dom Rep and all of them have musty smelling rooms caused by the humidity in the country, nothing else untoward. Rooms cleaned daily, towels changed daily, fridge restocked daily and beds changed every other day. The beach towel system was a great help and saved us space in our luggage, definitely worth using.

My husband and brother went on the dune buggy trip and had a fabulously time, although they did return in a filthy state. We all went to the Ocean World where we all had a great day, it just wasn’t long enough. My husband did the dolphin encounter and my brother and I did the sea lion encounter, a great experience all round. On our previous visits we did the Jeep Safari and Catamaran trips, both were excellent.

All of the staff were a great help. I had an ear infection, something I am prone to getting, and had to visit the medical centre. The bell boy made sure I had the correct documents and took me along and returned from me after see the doctor, definitely above and beyond the call of duty.

We had such a fantastic time that we are returning in May this year, a year earlier than we anticipated. If you decide to go you will have a great time. We did not meet anyone in the resort who didn’t, we even met a few people who were on their 3rd or 4th visits.

we travel frequently with our young children so we always look for a kids club. this resort had a kids club that was pretty useless. the staff did not organize any activities for the children. they sat and watched while the children colored pictures or played games on their own.
the beach was beautiful and the water was calm for swimming.
the buffet restaurant was very clean but the food set up was very disorganized. often, the food was inconsistently cooked.
it was very difficult to make a la carte reservations.
the ground floor rooms were very moldy but all the guests on higher floors said the rooms were very clean.
for what we paid, we would have been better off at a higher priced hotel with better services.

we have just come back from the gran ventana what a lovley holiday we went for 2 weeks we went with tomson and everything was on time. The hotel is right on the beach and the beaches were very clean they are not white like many people think they are dark in colour but the sea was blue and very clean you are on the atlantic side so it sometimes gets a bit rough but its not for long. the hotel staff are so nice the room was very good we had a queens size bed which we loved and we were on the ground floor and not a problem it has lots of security around there is a plaza down the road but it is very expensive and there is only tat in them anyway but its nice to go and look for yourself . we went on a trip with the reps and it was called the dominican night and it was a great nightit cost us 45 dollars each and it was worth going. There are plenty of beds round the pool and plenty on the beach and they provide the towels wich is good one thing they dont have is an iron so just be aware. The night time entertainment was very good there are i think 5 young lads and there is something on every night and they are so funny there is plenty going on round the pool in the day as well if you want to take part but all in all i would recomend it to anyone that likes a beach holiday and there is plenty to do for kids they even have a room for the kids to play in . The food was very good there are 3 other resterants where you can eat a grill bar just about on the beach a fish one and an italian we didnt go in them so i carnt comment on those so i hope this has helped you

My husband and I, along with our 4 children just returned from a week at the Gran Ventana. The kids had a great time, my husband and I are looking forward to our next vacation sans the little ones :)
The staff are super friendly and helpful when asked. The rooms are average. We checked into a dirty room, dirty towels on the bathroom floor, coffee cups, etc... but this was fixed soon.... though the maid didn't leave soap until the 3rd day, until then we used shampoo! The towels were not replaced each day and the mini bar was often not restocked as well. This got a bit frustrating as tipping the maid didn't make much difference.
The food was generally good, better than many other allinclusives that we stayed at. The desserts were really really good! Because of our 2 and 3 year old boys, we didn't have the nerve to try out the ala cartes. This resort is not 24 hour all inclusive, The restaurant is only open for certain time periods which can be tough when the kids appetites are not corresponding to the schedule.
The pools were great. Watch out for towel thieves, it is incredible how many towels get stolen and it is a $20 charge for each lost towel... crazy.
The beach is beautiful and the water is calm. It seems to be the best for kids as the waves are not too big as it is a bit protected by a reef. A walk down the beach will confirm that it is the best beach within the area of hotels!
The kids club is really basic but the girls are super nice. My 8 and 10 year old easily found friends, many from Montreal, and had a super time hanging out at the pool, the pool tables and the beach. Snorkelling was pretty good too!
Lots of families, and out of the four couples we connected with, 2 had been there before and would return again!
Overall, we had a great time. The staff and locals were all so friendly, really wonderful people. We didn't encounter any pushiness at all.

I really do not know why there were some bad reviews. We were a group of thirteen and were all placed in the same building as requested. The front staff were excellent and the Bellboys and Maids worked very hard. All of the staff at this resort went out of their way to help with any request. The food at the buffet was the best we ever ate in DR/Cuba. One of our party had a serious nut allergy and was walked around the buffet by staff in charge to show her what was safe and the foods not to eat. Same at the a la carte restaurants, she showed her paper that our Signature Rep ( Guy) wrote for her and they ensured her food was safe. Ingrid was our maid and was excellent and loves chocolate!
Take candy and gum they all love it. The waiters love Hot Wheels cars for their kids also.
There is a nice bar outside the resort called Road Way that we went to and watched the Canada mens hockey team win Gold, the street was blocked off by Canadians and the Policia were there. The beach is nice except when there is low tide, apparently happens three days a week ( a vender told us). You can still swim but need to be careful (coral).

I will be honest and try to cover all aspects of this resort. So please read through it. This resort is a perfect 3 to 4 start resort for All Inclusive Package. Please dont go with idea of this resort being a full fledged luxury resort. My wife and I had a great time. This resort is on the beach and has access to all sorts of water sports - included in your package is ocean-kayak rentals, wind-surfing boards, snorkeling gear and a basis lesson for the above. If you Tip the guys who train you they will be happy to stay with you and make sure you do learn things the right way. If you just want to relax on the beach, they have plenty of cabanas all over, so you will never feel like you will miss out on them if you dont get there early enough. They have 1 buffet dinning area and 3 À la carte restaurants. Apart from the Buffet we did make reservations at the Octopus Resturant, a must for one night. Their Sea Bass Entree was phenomenal. Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner at the Buffet is again 3-4 star quality, some days we enjoyed it and some days it was ok. Everything was good. We tried their beach restaurant which has burgers, grilled chicken, fish....we did enjoy the fish but not the chicken out there. The drinks are good but not that great, not top shelf liquor. But its all inclusive, i personally enjoyed their local rum Brugal - with Coke.

Staff is very friendly and are always doing their best to entertain you, they have activities for all ages, from 9 am to 9 pm. Early morning they start with Yoga and Pool Aerobics and other activities. In the afternoon they have games like bingo, table-tennis (ping-pong), pineapple bowling, pool, darts etc. In the evening they have entertainment shows that some times involves the hotel guests. For we enjoyed the beach and the pool 2 days and 1 day we participated in one of their evening entertainment dance performance. They also give you salsa dancing lessons before you perform.

FYI, this is more of a family type resort, you will see kids and family members all over the resort. Over all we had a great time and would recommend this hotel to all those who expect a good time at a 3-4 star all inclusive resort.

Resort-All Inclusive - 4 Star
Food - 3.5 Star
Pool/Beach Area - 5 Star
Staff - 5 Star
Activities - 4 Star

The only problems wwe had while staying here was the lack of towels. We would go to get our towels exchanged for clean ones and they never had any, we ended up having to use the same towels for days in a row. Also, they lack of towels in the bathroom was disapointing, so we also were forced to use our beach towels as shower towels. The food there was great, the people were friendly, the shows could have been better, but they still had them. Oh ya, the stray cats in the dining area.... i don't even know what to say about that.... i wouldn't go back to this hotel, but i also wouldn't say its terrible... ive just been to better ones.
AND the drinks at the disco aren't included in the "all inclusive" so you have to pay for your drinks, with we thought was rediculous, and we didn't go back
