My family and I booked this resort based on internet pictures and a travel agents recommendation. I read the reviews and thought, "You can't please everyone; enough people had a nice experience." OH BOY what a mistake. I have stayed in other all inclusives but this was the worst!

The hotel was clean and the staff could not do enough for you. We would tip modestly which helped and they were very appreciative. I was impressed with how hard the staff worked and would also smile and greet their guests.

We stayed on in an ocean front room which had only a partial view because it was blocked by the many palm trees, however it was clean, quiet and by far the nicest location in the resort.

The pictures of the pool looked lovely; Wrong!!! The pool was dirty even though we would see the staff cleaning it very eveing. Not only was it cloudy and dirty during the day but the concrete was broken in many places and paint was peeling. Management should really renovate the pool.

Drinks were watered down something aweful. The wine at dinner was just as bad. However the wine was better the meals at dinner. Buffet served the same food for lunch and dinner and there weren't any theme nights. The specialty restaurants were worse then the buuffet. Iberostar should be ashamed!! The food was the worse part of the vacation. my family and I went out to dinner 4 nights out of the week.. We ate in a great restauarant called Taste, a must if you are in Puerto Plata.

We went to Ocean World which was expensive but worth it! We also did a snorkeling trip which we spent almost 4 hours on a dirty bus and two more hours ont he boat communting to the reef. Once we were there we snorkeled for 45 minutes. NOT WORTH IT!!! Inquire about the snorkeling beore you book anything because I was not told that it would be so much traveling on a bus and so little time in the water.

The beach was okay a lot of seaweed and isnce it is on the Atlantic side you do not get the aqua blue water. I guess if you want to stay in DR look into Punt Cana on the carribean side. I hear the Club MEd there is really nice.

Stayed for 2 weeks in January with 3 year old son. Good check in lovely room nice and clean cot provided spotless, fridge stocked daily. All staff were pleasant and went out of their way including the beach attendants, the grounds were kept immaculate. Food was lovely with plenty of choice even for our son. Animation team where really friendly and made a point of greeting you daily without forcing you to join in, they worked non stop and their shows were fun to watch. We would definitely return for another holiday.

Firstly I would like to mention that we booked the holiday via First Choice (Thomson). We had no hassles or issues with them and it was well worth the extra money for the premium seats as the service was very good. Any negative comments against First Choice/Thomson as far as I was concerned are unfounded. I am one of the worst sceptics when it comes to Chartered airlines this is only the second time we have flown charter flights but I could not find fault with them. Yes we were delayed 2 hours on the outbound leg but we arrived only 1/2 hour late and on the return leg we arrived 45minutes early.

We arrived in the Dominican Republic and paid the obligatory $10 to get into the country! seems a bit of a con but this is a poor country and they have to get money from somewhere!!.

Our transfers to the hotel were smooth and did not take long circa 20 minutes on a bus and we were the first drop off. First impressions of the hotel were on how clean the place was. It was well presented and friendly. We were greeted with a welcome fruit punch drink. Check in was smooth and unproblematic and we were given a room in block 5.....the furthest from the reception. They had assigned us a room here as this was the quietest block and we had young children. When we got to the room we found we had one huge bed, and one other bed for our son, we also had a cot bed for our daughter for some strange reason. One quick chat with the porter and within 10 minutes the hotel had changed the cot bed for a normal bed. The luggage arrived in the room promptly after us on with the unpacking!!!!
The room was kept spotless and was fumigated once during the holiday and we were given plenty of warning about this but given the glorious weather it was unlikely we would be in the room other than to sleep anyway. Always there was a towel arranged on the bed with flowers and we could not fault the woman who looked after our room. The room also had a minibar this was supposed to be restocked every two days but ours was refilled daily. It only contained soft drinks and beer but was ideal for the evenings after getting the kids to sleep.

General Hotel Areas - These again were spotless and there was always cleaning of some description going on. There was never a shortage of anywhere to sit. There were tables outside where in an evening you could get served drink. There was a stage that had seating all around it for the evening entertainments. In reception there was a pond with Terrapins in it. There was also another pond by the bar with flamingos in it. All areas around the pool and the rooms were spotlessly clean.

Food - Before we went to the dominican republic we were given a lot of warnings about getting stomach upsets. We were well prepared with the usual Immodium and rehydration salts etc but we did not need them at all. We are always careful in the use of tap water in general when abroad but no more than normal. We also always had ice in our drinks the children did too! We had to as it was so hot at times.
The Buffet restaurant where we had breakfast and dinner was never mobbed with people although at certain times were busier than others. The choice for breakfast was huge, eggs of every kind, omlettes made to order, the usual continental meat selections, pancakes, waffles I could go on and on and on.....The fresh fruit was great we all loved the pineapple, how carribean of us! The Mango too was delicious. The cereal selection was limited to Museli, Coco Pops, Corn Flakes and Frosties however these were all branded, i.e. Kellogs, I saw the boxes!
For Dinner there was a different selection each night and this always included fresh fish. There was a mexican night, a Dominican night and a European night. We stayed for 2 weeks and we did not find the food selection repetitive by any means and we were never spoiled for choice. In addition to this they always had something for the kids, there was always Pizza, Pasta, chips and chicken . Also a different roast every night for the carnivores. Deserts were plentyful and always a different selection of cakes etc along with the usual mousses and ice creams.
We also ate at the sea food restaurant and the mexican restaurant. These are A la Carte restaurants and make a change from the buffet as you are served at your table. Again the food was excellent and we had the speciality Tacos in the mexican which were great and not the usual sliced steaks but two big slices of fillet and we had the Shellfish pasta in the sea food restaurant. All the A La Carte Restaurants have a policy of Long Trousers having to be worn, which was great as you werent surrounded the beach short brigade (I will come to them later....)
For Lunch we ate at the Restaurant by the pool (this doubles as El Bohio (Sea Food Restaurant) in the evenings. This was a less formal affair with things like hot dogs and burgers available with a good selection of salads etc. We just tended to have a snack here maybe a hot dog for the kids and a burger or maybe calimari for ourselves. You could use the restaurant dressed in swimwear without problem as long as you were not soaking and dripping water everywhere. The staff were seen to turn prople away who were dripping wet.

Pool - The pool is large with plenty of space around and in it. For the first couple of days we could see the concrete at the bottom of the pool as the coating had deteriorated and was coming off. A couple of days into the holiday the pool was emptied, repainted and refilled all in 24 hours. This made the appearance of the pool much much better. However you could see the paint bubbling in some areas and there was still some rouch patches on the floor of the pool. I feel that the hotel should take the time and close the pool completely and strip and re coat the pool properly. Yes the asthetics were improved but the problem still existed. Still it was impressive to see the pool out of action for only 24 hours. There were references in previous reviews to a green tinge to the edge of the pool. Yep it was there regardless of the constant cleaning by the staff. There always seemed to be someone scrubbing the edge of the pool. No idea what causes this but the combination of water, chemicals and all the sun tan lotion and oils smeared over the scarlet brits no doubt contribute to this. Our kids were never out of the pool and had a great time playing and swimming in the water. Neither them nor us suffered from ear infections mentioned in other reviews. However there was people we spoke to who did get infections in their ears. They were complimentary about the facilities in the hotel for medical treatment and the support the hotel gave them but nonetheless they still got an infection.
There were drinks machines and bar staff on had near the pool for you to either help yourself to soft drinks, juices and ice creams, or be served an alcoholic drink at the bar. The main gripe about the pool was the hotel has a policy that no loungers could be reserved with towels and left unattended. Great they had the policy but no good if it is not enforced. We travelled with young children and we were sometimes at the pool by 08:30 as they were up early. Even at this time we could not always get loungers under one of the numerous shades, in particular near the shallow end of the pool where the kids could play safely. There was one family who reserved at least 8 loungers and at one time they even had 10 or 12. They had half in the shade and half in the sun. This was excessive as during most of the day there was maybe 4 or 5 people there at any time. At other times sun loungers were covered with towels first thing in the morning and no one used the loungers until the afternoon. The hotel needs to enforce their policy, i would suggest they remove any towels etc from loungers, soak them in the pool and leave them in a heap for people to claim!!! The germans used to get bad press for reservign loungers, Carling even did a TV advert on this....Remember the Dam busters? But hardly a german in sight during our stay and it was down to us brits. Us brits have no right to complain about the germans reserving loungers!!!! I refused ot lower myself to that level.
We were given towel cards when we arrived at the hotel and we could get a towel each at the pool but we could exchange them regularly if they were soaked.

Bar - The bar was great and even sitting only a couple of yards from the bar itself we still could get served at our table with drinks. The drink selection was very good with Branded drinks available. The local beer El Presidente was good, and the cocktails were also excellent. I had pina Coladas one night and boy could you taste the alcohol in them!! You could also get most of the cocktails without alcohol which meant a strawberry Daquiri becam like a strawberry slush puppy, great for the kids and big kids!!!!

Staff - All staff were very friendly and always had a smile for us and the kids. Santos was our regular waiter in the buffet restaurant and new what we wanted to drink without having to ask and we never had to ask for refills of our glasses. The 'Star Friends' are an entertaining bunch who never stopped. They started the entertainment at around 10:30 ish. Yes it could be described as a bit Butlins like but they worked tirelessly and always smiling. I did take part in some volleyball and some water polo and my wife did some water aerobics (cheeky Monkeys routines was the hardest). The 'Star Friends' also have their own dance, tacky yes, did we get sick of the same music, yes, but you could not fault their work rate. It these guys who also did the evenings entertainments and we did take in a few of them and some were better than others. The Iberogrammys were a hoot and Cheeky Monkey did a great Michael Jackson Routine, but the highlight was the dirty dancing micky take!!!! The lion king show was also great.

The only other fault with the holiday were some of the holiday makers at the hotel. It seemed to be a CHAV haven. Cockney and Glaswegian chavs seemed to be everywhere. Is this harsh??? No. Why oh why did they lie out in the sun going ever redder drinking beer. No they did not get drunk and behave like idiots but if you got close to them their language was choice and at times they were able to use every swear word in one sentence. It was also appalling the amount of people who did not wash their hands after going to the toilet, not only unhygeinic but downright disgusting.

Rant over!! Did we have a good Holiday Yes, did we like the hotel yes, would we recommend it Yes!!!!! If you can tolerate the Chavs dont be scared to go.

After the unrelaxing flight on the extra legroom seats with Thomas Cook Airlines next to and behing the most figidity family I have ever met, it was only 20 minutes from the Airport to the Iberostar. At reception, due to the number of people it was quite chaotic, but we got served quickly and were in our room very efficiently early in the afternoon.

The room isnt a five star standard and is a little tired, but very clean and well equiped (as is the fridge if up keep tipping the maid!). The pool is great, does get yellow on the walls due to the chemicals, so dont wear expensive swimgear, unless you like it greenie/yellow! It was cleaned/painted whilst we were there, and the pool was only closed for about 24 hours in total, and we had no complaints (although others did!)

Hotel facilities are excellent, the animations team is good if you like that sort of thing, and they would keep your kids busy and amused!

Now onto the food, and this was my concern from doing an all inclusive, but it was exceptional in terms of volume and quantity! From the huge breakfasts which suit all tastes through to the BBQ on the beach and the paella party on the beach one lunchtime, it was excellent. Of the three a la carte restaurants, the brazilian was the best and the fish restaurant the worst, but that was probably due to our experience (the only time we had this) of poor staff.

The trips for megatrucks and the paradise island are expensive but there is probably too much selling of cigars, mamma juana and tourist nick nacks but they do show you some of the island and reduce the cabin fever! The snorkeling (never done before) is an absolute must, but I think you can also book it direct through Cayo Parisio or Paradise Island, which is substantially cheaper! Take pens, books, paper and toiletries on megatrucks, as you can give these to the children who you will visit.

The first negative of the actual hotel was our check-out, which took over an hour. Even though we arrived an hour early and checked out, we had to go back just prior to leaving to finalise everything and have our band cut-off by a staff member?!?!?!

The second negative point of the hotel, and they cant help this, is the holiday makers! Towels on sunbeds at 7.00 in the morning and no-one on them for most of the day (not the Germans, but us Brits), maybe the hotel should just throw them all in the pool! If they have a policy to remove, make sure this happens. Also there are a large number of 'chavs', as has been noted in prior reviews, surely it isnt hard to wear long trousers for dinner! Also, and this is the end of the rant, food and drink is inclusive, but this is a poor country so dont pile your plate high and then leave most of it. Two examples; one was in the buffet restaurant, a table of four (Americans, I think), left four full glasses of red wine, two beers were half finished, one full glass of orange juice, four glasses of water about three quarters full and four plates of food were only half eaten! Secondly, in the mexican restaurant, a table of two, had waited about ten minutes for there main course, it arrived, but they left (without eating any food) to go and meet friends for a drink in the bar (saw them after we left)! It is a poor country, it is all inclusive, but at least eat and drink what you order, you wouldnt do it at home, why when on holiday?!?!?!

Overall, great relaxing holiday and if you like all inclusive, the people we meet all raved about how much better it is than others that they have been to, it is a must hotel to visit. From our perspective, fourteen nights may have been too long in terms of cabin fever, but it was a thoroughly enjoyable holiday.

When my wife picks a new destination for our vacation, I usually wonder how it is going to be. With a 17 & 15 year old daughters and an 11 year old son, its always hard to keep everybody happy. Not here, everything was fantastic- food, fun, activities, people in the resort. The animation team made sure that everybody was having a good time. Alfonso from the animation team was crucial in making my family feel welcome. Talking with us he found out what everybody was passionate about and made sure to point us in the right direction. He was always the gentleman around my wife and daughters and Tony really got a kick out of him and his twin brother. Alfonso and the rest of the animation team were true ambassadors of the resort. The rest of the staff was also great and the place was one of the cleanest resorts I've been too.

The evening shows were great entertainment for the family and to see the same people in them that you are with all day (the animation team) makes them that much more fun. We had a GREAT time here and would go back again. Although people had complained about air conditioning or the pool. everything was in perfect order when we got there. The restaurants and the buffet always had plenty of different foods for us and it was great to try some fantastic new types of food. Definitely, 2 thumbs up!!

This was our 2nd stay at the ICD. (The first time we were there for 7 days no kids, this time we went for 14 with the kids.)

Before our arrival I had emailed the hotel for a room with an ocean view not on the ground floor. I was also expecting a room with 2 doubles considering we were there with the kids. We were very pleasantly surprised when we got to our room. We had a king size bed for ourselves and they had set up a single and the little sofa for our boys. Since we were repeat guests, we also had a nice flower arrangement, some fresh fruit and a bottle of rum awaiting us. Wonderful.

It was also my husband's birthday during our stay. On this day when we got back to our room we found a cake waiting for him. Nice touch. Room was immaculately cleaned.

Food:
Buffet was very good. None of us had trouble finding something to eat. We ate at the brazilian once, the mexican twice and the tropical once. I definitely do not recommend the tropical. Service was SLOW and food wasn't that great.

Entertainment:
Good as usual. Lots of effort put into it. My only complaint was that we were there for 14 nights and we didn't get to see the Lion King, but we saw black light light theatre twice! We were very disappointed in this fact.

Grounds:
Immaculately kept as usual.

Kids club:
Hit and miss. Kids weren't very keen to go. Facilities could use upgrading. Our oldest had a great time participating in the plays.

Can't wait to go again!

My group of three stayed at the Iberostar Costa Dorada from 7/18 to 8/3/09. It was wonderful! I emailed ahead requesting a room in building #8 on the top floor with a pool view, and for an extra bed in the room. We were given the perfect top floor room with a wonderful pool view, and within 10 minutes of our arrival the maid was setting up the extra bed! I was very impressed.

All of the staff were friendly and helpful and the grounds of the hotel though not very big, were beautiful and well maintained. Maid service was good and we left a tip and little candies for her every day. One suggestion: More bottled water in the mini fridge since it's used for both drinking and tooth brushing!!! The food in the buffet restaurant was good, though a bit repetitive. We went to the reservation restaurants a few times. The Mexican restaurant was our favorite. Make sure to tip the hardworking wait staff and bartenders!

The beach was O.K., certainly not as pretty as the one in Punta Cana, but we are generally poolside people so that was fine. You have to get up early to get a spot by the pool, at least by 7:30 a.m. We took turns getting up early to get our favorite chairs. There are lots of activities by the pool and on the beach starting at 10:00 a.m., and we participated in everything from archery to mini golf. The nightly shows put on by the Star Friends are very entertaining. I preferred these much more to the shows put on by the professional dancers. The Lion King show which included all of the Kid's Club children, the animation staff and the dancers was adorable. One person in our group participated in the Guys vs. Girls show one night...it was great fun! The hotel disco was good at times and the DJ's were very accommodating and played a nice mix of music. We enjoyed the Merengue and Bachata contests. Thank you to Mamou and Albert in the DJ booth! We ventured out to Coco Bongo a couple of times, the first time it was way too crowded, the second time was perfect. Lots of locals and tourists and a good mix of Dominican and American music.

The animation staff at the resort is excellent! Thank you to Quimo, Bossy Boots, Cheeky Monkey, Shacalaca, John Travolta, Barak Obama, Mickey Mouse, Spiderman, Grace, Mama Maria, and also Cristina in the towel booth. They were all very friendly and fun and made our stay even more enjoyable!

For those who are concerned about the condition of the swimming pool, they repaired it while we were there. It was drained, repaired, repainted and refilled in 24 hours. It wasn't really much of an inconvenience for it to be closed since they just moved all of the activities to the beach areas. We didn't do any tours, though we had planned to book some...we just never made it off the resort.

I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone that is looking for beautiful surroundings, a wonderful staff, and excellent service. We usually don't repeat visits to the same resort as we like the excitement that comes with going to new places... but we are already planning a return trip to Iberostar Costa Dorada. Same time, same place, next summer!!!
