“Fantastic holiday”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 23 August 2009

I stayed at this hotel from 8th August until the 22nd August.
when we arrived we were greeted with a fruit cocktail slush, appreciated due to the heat. the check in was smooth, we were told one of our rooms wasnt ready but would be in about 20 minutes.
we went to our room and it was lovely, 9011. our second room was 9012 which was interconnecting. ours a double had a bed which a family of 6 could have slept in and our daughters was two singles. They were clean, tidy and big enough for our bed a table and chair, sofa, dressing table, drawers and a built in wardrobe. there was a fully stocked fridge, hairdryer, iron and ironing board and all the usual toiletries.
a towel swan with flowers was on the bed, this was replaced each day with elephants, snakes and numerous other animals.
The mercado buffet restaurant had a wide range of food, breakast had cereals, breads, cheese, fruit, salad, bacon, sausage, waffles, pancakes, etc. also the banana smoothie was delicious.
Lunch at both the mercado and pool bar was good, pizzas, pasta, chips, burgers, chicken, salad.
Dinner again at the mercado a full buffet, with a roast everyday, fish, soup, pizza etc again and also a dominican section. who knew bananas wrapped in bacon would be delicious?
There are 3 speciality restaurants. the pool one we didnt eat in as we are not keen on fish, but the menu did look nice. the mexican we ate at once, which to be honest was more than enough. Mexican food is a family favourite and we all were disappointed. we would have liked it more if it was a bit more spicy, it was a bit bland, but maybe that is what traditional mexican is like. the service was also the worst we received in the entire fortnight. the brazilian was amazing, 7 different meats are brought around each on a huge skewer, these are placed on your plate which already has on a jacket potato, corn on the cob and vegetables. One word of advice, do not have too much for a starter as you will need to be rolled out of the restaurant. The service both times we were there was excellent. men do have to smarten up for these 3 restaurants, either long trousers or long smart shorts need to be worn. my husband forgot and was turned away, very funny.
The pool is huge with sections for volleyball, basketball and water polo. There is the jacuzzi in the centre, which does feel cooler than the rest of the pool. There was a man cleaning the pool constantly when we were there. There was the usual reserving of the sunbeds but there were plenty, especially if like us you didnt mind where you sat.
the beach was lovely, yes there was seaweed, but guess what its the sea. the sand is blistering hot and the breeze fools you into thinking you arent getting burned. The kids loved the kayaking, you can use the catamarans but need to have an hours training before you do. this costs $40 each.
The entertainment, erm!!!, ok its not broadway or the west end but if you observe it with an attitude of im on holiday and i dont really care, its fine.
the stargang work their little socks off, from first thing in the morning to the entertainment at night, they even give themselves nicknames to try and make themselves sound more interesting, hollywood, mickey mouse and shakalaka to name a few.
we did two excursions, 1, the dunebuggies which was fantastic and mucky. then the first choice dominican night which was also good with a tour of puerta plata and a meal in a restaurant.
As this is there low season, they seemed to be updating the decor. there were painters in and landscape gardeners all over, but they didnt get in your way.
overall this is a great hotel and i would recommend this to anyone, whether you want an active holiday or a chill out holiday.

I have been in many all inclusives, this one is not one of my favorites. The food was great, the beach beautiful, but the hotel itself needed to be updated (pool, grounds, rooms). I guess if you don't mind an older hotel structure, then it would be fine. However, I have to say that the entertainment at night was really poor and of bad taste.

Have just returned from Iberostar Costa Dorada, after a two week stay with family and family friends, the group included both young children and teenagers and was enjoyed by all.
Ichecked trip advisor before we left and though the majority of the reviews recommended the hotel there were a few that suggested it wasnt as good as they had hoped, however any worries I did have were unfounded and the resort really did live up to its 5* standard.
The hotel is right on the beach with plenty of sun loungers and shade, the hotel pool is reasonably sized and very nice, we just preferred the beach as there was more of a breeze which definatly helped as it was so hot!

I read a couple of reviews saying that the dress code was ignored, however I did not see this at all, men are required to wear long shorts and smart shoes in the evening to the main restraunt and long trousers and shirts to the speciality restaurants and everyone followed this.
The food is brilliant, there is plenty of choice and the buffet restraunt does themed sections every night, so plenty of variety. The speciality restraunts are also very good, we werent that bothered by the brazillian one but the mexican and seafood ones were good.
The service is also really good, all the waiters and waitresses are polite and very friendly constantly refilling your glasses and made us all feel very welcome during our stay.

The hotel entertainment team offer lots of activities during the day including pool games, volley ball, aerobics etc and encourage you to get involved but you are not forced to! In the evening there is a kids show before the main show, and the main shows are really good, would definalty recommend seeing the Lion King, the team work really hard there and although not all the shows are amazing a lot of effort goes into each one and they try to cater for everyone. They also have bands playing in the evening which is really nice when you are sitting outisde having drinks.
There is a kids club at the hotel and one of the children we were with went to that and made lots of friends, there were lots of activities for the children and they were involved in their own show before the main evening entertainment.

Whilts we were there we went on two trips; Mega Trucks and Paradise Island. Mega Trucks was a briliant day out, the horseridng made it and you dont need to be experienced to do it. Paradise island was also really good the only annoying thing about it is the hour and a half drive there, but the snorkelling and speed boat were brilliant and worth it!

I would recommend this to everyone, really enjoyed it the only thing I would say is LOCK YOUR SUITCASE, when unpacking our luggage on our return we have found that it has been tampered with and perfume and aftershave which we had bought on our way out in dutyfree is missing(we had to put this is our main luggage as NO liquids can be put in hand luggage on the way home), obviously this is nothing to do with hotel but the airport.

All in all we had a brilliant hoilday, we have been to a 5* resort in Cuba a couple of years ago and this is on the same level, the food and entertainment in Costa Dorada were better though.

hi - just got back - myself - and my wife for 5 nights --- ill keep it short an sweet -- ibeostar PUERTA PLATA is an older resort but well kept with an older ambience - i have been to many all inclusive resorts - the food was excellant and varied nightly - the speciality restaurants were very good - DONT BELIEVE ALL THESE REVIEWS SAYINGS DRINKS WERE WATERED DOWN - most of the liquor are not top brands - i wanted to be particlar and i ordered the better brands - they had them - and they were the real stuff - yes if you order the pina coladas and milks shake drinks its hard to get a buzz - drink an real drink a - get buzzzed
the pool was fine - clean - well kept - the beach top rate- yes some seaweed - but its the ocean water otherwise was prestine - bring a fishing rod - i caught a 10lb snook on the beach - - staff treated us very well
i do suggest if you dont go with a family or have kids - you may want to select a couples resort - as there were a lot of kids - but if your a family the people i spoke to were very happy
no complanit on the rooms
entertaiment was typical for an island resort
TOO THE RESORT - GET A WET BAR IN THE POOL - this was my only complaint - they did not have one !

ALL IN ALL A GREAT VALUE FOR $140 A NIGHT FOR 2 PEOPLE
YES IF YOU WANT BETTER FOOD AN ENTERTAIMENT GO THE CLUB MEDS AND COUPLES - BUT PAY 5 TIMES MORE - FOR A $1600 VACATION FOR 5 NIGHTS with air - I HIGHLY RECCOMEND THIS RESORT
those who doe not like this place - are veryyy particular - they should pay the extra $4,500 ?!

My family and I booked this resort based on internet pictures and a travel agents recommendation. I read the reviews and thought, "You can't please everyone; enough people had a nice experience." OH BOY what a mistake. I have stayed in other all inclusives but this was the worst!

The hotel was clean and the staff could not do enough for you. We would tip modestly which helped and they were very appreciative. I was impressed with how hard the staff worked and would also smile and greet their guests.

We stayed on in an ocean front room which had only a partial view because it was blocked by the many palm trees, however it was clean, quiet and by far the nicest location in the resort.

The pictures of the pool looked lovely; Wrong!!! The pool was dirty even though we would see the staff cleaning it very eveing. Not only was it cloudy and dirty during the day but the concrete was broken in many places and paint was peeling. Management should really renovate the pool.

Drinks were watered down something aweful. The wine at dinner was just as bad. However the wine was better the meals at dinner. Buffet served the same food for lunch and dinner and there weren't any theme nights. The specialty restaurants were worse then the buuffet. Iberostar should be ashamed!! The food was the worse part of the vacation. my family and I went out to dinner 4 nights out of the week.. We ate in a great restauarant called Taste, a must if you are in Puerto Plata.

We went to Ocean World which was expensive but worth it! We also did a snorkeling trip which we spent almost 4 hours on a dirty bus and two more hours ont he boat communting to the reef. Once we were there we snorkeled for 45 minutes. NOT WORTH IT!!! Inquire about the snorkeling beore you book anything because I was not told that it would be so much traveling on a bus and so little time in the water.

The beach was okay a lot of seaweed and isnce it is on the Atlantic side you do not get the aqua blue water. I guess if you want to stay in DR look into Punt Cana on the carribean side. I hear the Club MEd there is really nice.

Stayed for 2 weeks in January with 3 year old son. Good check in lovely room nice and clean cot provided spotless, fridge stocked daily. All staff were pleasant and went out of their way including the beach attendants, the grounds were kept immaculate. Food was lovely with plenty of choice even for our son. Animation team where really friendly and made a point of greeting you daily without forcing you to join in, they worked non stop and their shows were fun to watch. We would definitely return for another holiday.

Firstly I would like to mention that we booked the holiday via First Choice (Thomson). We had no hassles or issues with them and it was well worth the extra money for the premium seats as the service was very good. Any negative comments against First Choice/Thomson as far as I was concerned are unfounded. I am one of the worst sceptics when it comes to Chartered airlines this is only the second time we have flown charter flights but I could not find fault with them. Yes we were delayed 2 hours on the outbound leg but we arrived only 1/2 hour late and on the return leg we arrived 45minutes early.

We arrived in the Dominican Republic and paid the obligatory $10 to get into the country! seems a bit of a con but this is a poor country and they have to get money from somewhere!!.

Our transfers to the hotel were smooth and did not take long circa 20 minutes on a bus and we were the first drop off. First impressions of the hotel were on how clean the place was. It was well presented and friendly. We were greeted with a welcome fruit punch drink. Check in was smooth and unproblematic and we were given a room in block 5.....the furthest from the reception. They had assigned us a room here as this was the quietest block and we had young children. When we got to the room we found we had one huge bed, and one other bed for our son, we also had a cot bed for our daughter for some strange reason. One quick chat with the porter and within 10 minutes the hotel had changed the cot bed for a normal bed. The luggage arrived in the room promptly after us on with the unpacking!!!!
The room was kept spotless and was fumigated once during the holiday and we were given plenty of warning about this but given the glorious weather it was unlikely we would be in the room other than to sleep anyway. Always there was a towel arranged on the bed with flowers and we could not fault the woman who looked after our room. The room also had a minibar this was supposed to be restocked every two days but ours was refilled daily. It only contained soft drinks and beer but was ideal for the evenings after getting the kids to sleep.

General Hotel Areas - These again were spotless and there was always cleaning of some description going on. There was never a shortage of anywhere to sit. There were tables outside where in an evening you could get served drink. There was a stage that had seating all around it for the evening entertainments. In reception there was a pond with Terrapins in it. There was also another pond by the bar with flamingos in it. All areas around the pool and the rooms were spotlessly clean.

Food - Before we went to the dominican republic we were given a lot of warnings about getting stomach upsets. We were well prepared with the usual Immodium and rehydration salts etc but we did not need them at all. We are always careful in the use of tap water in general when abroad but no more than normal. We also always had ice in our drinks the children did too! We had to as it was so hot at times.
The Buffet restaurant where we had breakfast and dinner was never mobbed with people although at certain times were busier than others. The choice for breakfast was huge, eggs of every kind, omlettes made to order, the usual continental meat selections, pancakes, waffles I could go on and on and on.....The fresh fruit was great we all loved the pineapple, how carribean of us! The Mango too was delicious. The cereal selection was limited to Museli, Coco Pops, Corn Flakes and Frosties however these were all branded, i.e. Kellogs, I saw the boxes!
For Dinner there was a different selection each night and this always included fresh fish. There was a mexican night, a Dominican night and a European night. We stayed for 2 weeks and we did not find the food selection repetitive by any means and we were never spoiled for choice. In addition to this they always had something for the kids, there was always Pizza, Pasta, chips and chicken . Also a different roast every night for the carnivores. Deserts were plentyful and always a different selection of cakes etc along with the usual mousses and ice creams.
We also ate at the sea food restaurant and the mexican restaurant. These are A la Carte restaurants and make a change from the buffet as you are served at your table. Again the food was excellent and we had the speciality Tacos in the mexican which were great and not the usual sliced steaks but two big slices of fillet and we had the Shellfish pasta in the sea food restaurant. All the A La Carte Restaurants have a policy of Long Trousers having to be worn, which was great as you werent surrounded the beach short brigade (I will come to them later....)
For Lunch we ate at the Restaurant by the pool (this doubles as El Bohio (Sea Food Restaurant) in the evenings. This was a less formal affair with things like hot dogs and burgers available with a good selection of salads etc. We just tended to have a snack here maybe a hot dog for the kids and a burger or maybe calimari for ourselves. You could use the restaurant dressed in swimwear without problem as long as you were not soaking and dripping water everywhere. The staff were seen to turn prople away who were dripping wet.

Pool - The pool is large with plenty of space around and in it. For the first couple of days we could see the concrete at the bottom of the pool as the coating had deteriorated and was coming off. A couple of days into the holiday the pool was emptied, repainted and refilled all in 24 hours. This made the appearance of the pool much much better. However you could see the paint bubbling in some areas and there was still some rouch patches on the floor of the pool. I feel that the hotel should take the time and close the pool completely and strip and re coat the pool properly. Yes the asthetics were improved but the problem still existed. Still it was impressive to see the pool out of action for only 24 hours. There were references in previous reviews to a green tinge to the edge of the pool. Yep it was there regardless of the constant cleaning by the staff. There always seemed to be someone scrubbing the edge of the pool. No idea what causes this but the combination of water, chemicals and all the sun tan lotion and oils smeared over the scarlet brits no doubt contribute to this. Our kids were never out of the pool and had a great time playing and swimming in the water. Neither them nor us suffered from ear infections mentioned in other reviews. However there was people we spoke to who did get infections in their ears. They were complimentary about the facilities in the hotel for medical treatment and the support the hotel gave them but nonetheless they still got an infection.
There were drinks machines and bar staff on had near the pool for you to either help yourself to soft drinks, juices and ice creams, or be served an alcoholic drink at the bar. The main gripe about the pool was the hotel has a policy that no loungers could be reserved with towels and left unattended. Great they had the policy but no good if it is not enforced. We travelled with young children and we were sometimes at the pool by 08:30 as they were up early. Even at this time we could not always get loungers under one of the numerous shades, in particular near the shallow end of the pool where the kids could play safely. There was one family who reserved at least 8 loungers and at one time they even had 10 or 12. They had half in the shade and half in the sun. This was excessive as during most of the day there was maybe 4 or 5 people there at any time. At other times sun loungers were covered with towels first thing in the morning and no one used the loungers until the afternoon. The hotel needs to enforce their policy, i would suggest they remove any towels etc from loungers, soak them in the pool and leave them in a heap for people to claim!!! The germans used to get bad press for reservign loungers, Carling even did a TV advert on this....Remember the Dam busters? But hardly a german in sight during our stay and it was down to us brits. Us brits have no right to complain about the germans reserving loungers!!!! I refused ot lower myself to that level.
We were given towel cards when we arrived at the hotel and we could get a towel each at the pool but we could exchange them regularly if they were soaked.

Bar - The bar was great and even sitting only a couple of yards from the bar itself we still could get served at our table with drinks. The drink selection was very good with Branded drinks available. The local beer El Presidente was good, and the cocktails were also excellent. I had pina Coladas one night and boy could you taste the alcohol in them!! You could also get most of the cocktails without alcohol which meant a strawberry Daquiri becam like a strawberry slush puppy, great for the kids and big kids!!!!

Staff - All staff were very friendly and always had a smile for us and the kids. Santos was our regular waiter in the buffet restaurant and new what we wanted to drink without having to ask and we never had to ask for refills of our glasses. The 'Star Friends' are an entertaining bunch who never stopped. They started the entertainment at around 10:30 ish. Yes it could be described as a bit Butlins like but they worked tirelessly and always smiling. I did take part in some volleyball and some water polo and my wife did some water aerobics (cheeky Monkeys routines was the hardest). The 'Star Friends' also have their own dance, tacky yes, did we get sick of the same music, yes, but you could not fault their work rate. It these guys who also did the evenings entertainments and we did take in a few of them and some were better than others. The Iberogrammys were a hoot and Cheeky Monkey did a great Michael Jackson Routine, but the highlight was the dirty dancing micky take!!!! The lion king show was also great.

The only other fault with the holiday were some of the holiday makers at the hotel. It seemed to be a CHAV haven. Cockney and Glaswegian chavs seemed to be everywhere. Is this harsh??? No. Why oh why did they lie out in the sun going ever redder drinking beer. No they did not get drunk and behave like idiots but if you got close to them their language was choice and at times they were able to use every swear word in one sentence. It was also appalling the amount of people who did not wash their hands after going to the toilet, not only unhygeinic but downright disgusting.

Rant over!! Did we have a good Holiday Yes, did we like the hotel yes, would we recommend it Yes!!!!! If you can tolerate the Chavs dont be scared to go.
