“Iberostar Made our Vacation Great!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 March 2006

We have been on a couple of Cruises, but this was our first time at an All-Inclusive Resort and we were not sure what to expect. However, we were very pleased with the Hotel, Staff and Great Service we received! The room was always comfortable & clean, the Buffet was surprisingly very good - lots of variety every day, the Pool was clean and very beautiful with enough Shade for us, the Staff were always smiling and giving a friendly Hola! when you met them. The grounds were pleasant with the fountains and Orchids and the Open Courtyard was a lovely place to sit in the evening and listen to the Entertainment. We did not spend a lot of time on the Beach - only one day - but it was groomed every day and was pleasant enough. The a la Carte restaurants were so-so and the service not all that good, we found we enjoyed the Buffet more. The Beach BBQ was good and the Paella was to die for!! The Bar Service was good as well. We went on a couple of Tours: The Whale Watching is very far away and was a marathon day: 6am - 9 pm. It is a long Bus Ride, the food was not that good then they put you in Small Boats which can be very rough for anyone who has back problems when the ocean has swells. (and it usually does) The Tour Guide was not much fun either - no joking etc. and did not provide much in the way of Rum and no Beer or Pop at all! - so be warned if you chose this Tour. (we suggest find a way to rent your own boat - or book a fishing tour & combine with Whale Watching) We highly recommend the Outback Safari as it was a Blast - FUN Tour Guides, Lots of Rum, Beer & Pop, Good Back Country Tour, Very Good Lunch then Boogie Boarding and all! We laughed a lot that day. Our Day Trip into Puerto Plata was interesting but we felt shuffled like cattle at times. We recommend that you simply hire a Cab & Tour Guide (you can book one just outside your Hotel Gate - the group of people gathered across from your Gate are the Tour Guides for Hire)to take you around - you will see a lot more and have more personalized service - for about the same price. We did enjoy the Market at Sosua - enjoyed the Ambience a lot and had a nice Lobster for Lunch that day. It was an experience being on the Roads in the DR as the main driving rule seems to be simple: if you are smaller than the other vehicle you better get out of the way! The Buses simply honk their horns and the small trucks and scooters just move out of the way! A little unruly for what we are used to, but there does not seem to be a lot of accidents. We just took it in stride and did not let it bother us. All in all - a great vacation - thank you Iberostar Costa Dorada & all Dominicans who made our vacation so special - we will be back!

We arrived at the hotel on February 19th/2006 and right from the beginning the service was excellent. The pool area is very hot..... be careful, or you may get burnt. Use lots of suntan lotion. If you save lounges prior to 9AM and are not present, security will take your towels...so beware and be there. The only slightly irritating issue was the shortage of lounges around the pool area. The resort is fabulous, the staff are wonderful and I have never visited a cleaner resort. You can eat anything that your heart desires. The variety of well prepared and presented food was outstanding. We found the breakfasts to be absolutely wonderful!! The guests at this resort are very well taken care of from the moment you arrive to the time that you leave. The evening shows are fun and very entertaining. The beach is large and can get quite breezy. If the pool area becomes too warm for you, you have the option of visiting the beach area that you will find to be substantially, cooler. You can walk for miles. I recommend this resort to anyone that wants a fun-filled vacation in a friendly and warm atmosphere. We loved it!!!

Visited the Costa Dorado week of 2/17/06. Had great weather, rained often at night. Pool was beautiful, the buffet was good but got to be monotonous after a few days. The specialty restaurants were good. We liked the Mexican the best. We arrived after a week of stormy weather so I understand the sea was alittle more churned up than usual. So there was alot of seaweed that they tried to clean up, but it was an endless effort. If you walked 5 minutes down the beach in either direction the beach was much nicer but no chairs. Rooms were clean and yes a small tip does get you more. Very friendly staff. Didn't put my child in kids club so no comment. We went on Monster truck safari, fun but a long day. Ocean world was fun but alittle too long. Not really much there to do.

We stayed at the Iberostar Costa Dorada from Jan 28, 2006 to Feb 11, 2006. There was 5 of us, myself, my girlfried, my brother and my parents.

While we were there my parents renewed their wedding vows. The Renewal of the Vows service was excellent. It was a quaint little ceremony held in the courtyard beside the Flamingo Pool. There was a photographer who took pictures during the ceremony and afterwards there was cake and champagne. Also, there was a 3 piece band that played songs and sang as the ceremony progressed. After the ceremony we had dinner at the Tropical Restaurant, which was excellent. The whole ceremony was put together by the Wedding Coordinator Santo Valdez. He did an excellent job, and everyone was very pleased with the ceremony.

The Service at this resort is what stands out as the best thing about it. Every employee we dealt with or talked to was very polite and knowledgable. From the front desk staff, Santo, the Wedding Coordinator, Ysidro, Henry & Domingo at the buffet, Oswaldo, Wilson, and Jose at the Lobby bar they all did everything in their power to make our stay as pleseant as possible.

Everyone who has complained about this hotel has complained about the food. That I don't understand because the food everywhere was excellent. The buffet always had something good to eat and we never had a problem finding something that was different from the day before.

All of the three al a carte restaurants were excellent. It is a different atmosphere from the buffet and you have many choices from their menus. The Tropical restaurant was our favorite. I don't eat seafood but my family really loved the Lobster Spaghetti and they really recommend it.

There were three of us in our room and we had lots of space to move around. The maid service did an excellent job keeping the room clean, new towels stocked and most importantly, the beer fridge full of beer, pop and water. We did tip everyday and did receive some towel sculptures but on most days we did not, not a big deal. The airconditioning worked and we also had a ceiling fan.

The pool water was cool, but very refreshing on the real hot days. The whirlpool in the centre of the pool is very nice and although it also had cool water in it as well, it was nice on hot days. They do mention that you are not allowed to reserve the pool lounge chairs but everyone does, so sometimes it is hard to get a chair by the pool.

The beach was very nice. As everyone else has mentioned there was some seaweed, but it was cleaned up every morning and during the day as well. We never found it a very big problem and went swimming many of the days we were there. There is also many beach lounge chairs around so there is always a place to lay down and get a good tan, sleep or find shade.

The Star Friends entertainment crew work tirelessly to provide something for people to do all day long and are part of the evening entertainment as well. There are pool/beach activities and games all day long so there is always something for everybody to do if you so desire. The night shows are themed and are on a 2 week schedule so you more than likely won't see the same thing twice. They put a lot of effort into the shows and are very entertaining.

We did visit each of the bars daily and were always suprised at how cheerful the bartenders were. After a couple of days they did seem to recognize us and they shook our hands and seemed to serve us promptly and ahead of other people. We did tip them well and it did seem that others didn't tip at all, so maybe that's the reason they treated us so well. I'm not much of a rum drinker but did indulge in many Cuba Libres(Rum & coke). The beer is not too bad either. There was Presidente on tap and Bohemian in bottles in our room beer fridge. My girlfried loved the Caipirinhas, it's a lime drink with rum.

If you happen to be at the resort around Superbowl time make sure to talk to the 2 Canadian Kevins about the Superbowl Party they put on every year. They hold it in a conference room that can fit 200 people. The game is shown on a bis screen. The room has it's own bar and bartender and it is catered. We went with some people from England(their first NFL game) and everyone had quite a good time. The Kevins put alot of work into it and it's worth checking out even if you don't watch football.

All in all, we all had a marvellous time at this resort and we would definately go back again. Hell I wish we never left.

If anyone has any questions feel free to e-mail me at vang@kmts.ca.

We are great fans of Iberostar chain and even got married at Iberostar Cozumel in 2004. My husband and I stayed in Iberostar Costa Dorada from Feb 8 till Feb 15, 2006. The hotel is extremely clean, service very good, and my overall rating is EXCELLENT. It is in our opinion the best hotel around Puerto Plata area. We arrived around noon and got a room with two separate beds. We went back to the reception to let them know that we hoped for a romantic week to celebrate our anniversary on Feb 14 (Valentine’s Day) and were immediately moved to a room with a great view and a king size bed. On Valentine’s Day, we were sent a bottle of champagne and a fruit basket to our room, which was a very nice touch.

Puerto Plata is on the north coast (Atlantic), so please do your homework and check the long-term weather forecast, and read about Puerto Plata to know what to expect. It gets rainy and cloudy there much more than in Punta Cana. On cloudy and rainy days, we scheduled trips to Puerto Plata, Isabella de Torres (mountain) and Outback Safari, and stayed on the beach when it was sunny, so we were not disappointed. It was cloudy or rained half of the time during our 1 week there, but it had nothing to do with the quality of the hotel. So if you do want to come to Puerto Plata, we would highly recommend this hotel.
The advantage of Puerto Plata location (versus Punta Cana) is the ability to venture outside of the resort and do some good sightseeing. The trips are excellent.
OUTBACK SAFARI – we enjoyed it the most. We saw real Dominican Republic, how people live, the countryside, local school, fruit plantation, we took a boat down a river, did boogie boarding at Cabarete beach and we even held a small crocodile!
PUERTO PLATA – we found the Amber museum and Brugal rum factory very interesting. We bought some larimar jewellery, some local crafts and 4 bottles of rum for just $5 US dollars a bottle. We also got a short tour of nicer homes of Puerto Plata and liked it a lot.
ISABELLA DE TORRES – we took a cab to the cable car on our own (we negotiated $30 US dollars for a round trip by cab). A cable car ticket (round trip) cost $7 dollars US.
The views from the top are breathtaking. But, go there in the morning before the fog forms at the top of the mountain in the afternoon. Otherwise, you may not be able to see anything through the clouds. The statue of Jesus the Redeemer on top is a smaller replica of the one on Corcovado in Rio.

The hotel lobby is all marble floors and nice mahogany furniture designed to resemble the native Taino Indian art. It’s very tasteful. The hotel gardens are beautiful with palm trees, luscious greenery, flowers, orchids, fountains, and red flamingos walking around. There is a turtle pond in the main lobby and you may see peacocks wandering around the pool and garden areas. We liked the internal courtyard, which was like an outdoor café, that got lively in the evenings. During night shows, we chose to sit there to avoid cigarette smoke in the theatre and could still listen to the music and see some of the performance from there.
The main buffet restaurant is quite spacious and the selection of food is very good. Lots of fresh fruit (passion fruit, papaya and pineapple were our favourites), many local dishes, but also salads, pasta, stews, fish, pizza, veggies and deserts, so that everyone could be satisfied. We tried all three a la carte restaurants: Mexican, Brazilian and Tropical. All very good, but we enjoyed the Brazilian rodizio style skewers and the flank steak with farmers cheese at the Tropical restaurant the most. Food is fresh and we never had any stomach problems. We felt great all the time! Drinks were fantastic, but the lobby bar offered the best pina colada and caipirinha and was very generous with rum! My husband preferred freshly made coffee from the lobby bar rather than buffet, and we often headed straight to the bar after breakfast to start a day with a cup of strong coffee and a glass of delicious pina colada before going to the beach. But, keep it in mind that coconut milk acts as a mild laxative, so if you have more than 5 pina coladas or coco locos a day, you may find yourself running to a bathroom a bit too often.

We spent time at the beach rather than around the pool, and discovered that the best place to swim, free of patches of reef, is on the left side and in the middle. We didn’t use water shoes at all. The sand is not white, but brownish, which is normal on the northern coast and seaweed gets cleaned all the time, so we didn’t mind it at all. The pool is large and very nice, and since we moved to the pool later in the afternoon when it got a bit windy at the beach, we never had a problem finding empty lounge chairs.

It was a wonderful vacation, even though we did not have sun all the time. We would highly recommend this resort and Iberostar company. The standard is very high. Definitely 5 stars.

My husband and I were married at the Iberostar Costa Dorada in January 2006. We had 36 people join us and everyone had a fantastic time. The resort, gardens, rooms, food and service were all excellent. We had no complaints or problems during our stay nor did anyone else in our group. As most of the other reviews cover the above details we though we would give more detail about weddings as we had trouble finding information on this aspect of the resort.

We would highly recommend this resort to anyone considering a destination wedding. We booked approx. 6 months ahead and corresponded with the wedding coordionator, Santo, via email. His responses were always timely and answered all of our quesitons. The resort has a set wedding package and there are many extras available such as video, extra flowers etc.

When we arrived we met with the wedding coordinator to finalize details like choosing flowers, a cake and hiring the videographer. The ceremony took place in the gazebo off the lobby and was decorated beautifully. At the ceremony we said our vows (translated by one of the resort staff), had champagne, cut the cake and had our first dance. Bring a cd with your music on it and they will play it for you.

We had our reception at the Mexican restaurant and due to our large group and the time of year we were able to have it to ourselve for the evening. The food and service were excellent. They allowed us to make all of our speeches and even played our cds that we had brought along for us.

Santo and the wedding team did a wonderful job and were very accomodating of any requests that we had. The entire day was fun and stress free. If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact us.

If you like potaotes, forget this resort. The food was good for the first couple of days but after that forget it. They serve the same food for lunch and dinner every day, no varity. When it rains the tiles are very slippery! I saw four people fall after I fell myself. Other than that, the resort was clean and the staff very friendly. I've been to five all inclusive resorts and would rate this one second to last.
