“heaven you are in for a treat!!!!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2009

got back this morning already wanting to rebook. wonderful hotel, staff are the best so friendly will do anything to please. entertainment is really good for all ages. bar in bedroom that they will restock for free everyday if required. a lot of choice regarding food, but if you want the steakhouse / italien have to book really early!!! so clean everywhere, if someone drops a cigerette butt a cleaner is behind them to clean up straightaway. complex has its own private beach, with a great bar. they do dance, fitness classes and games i was given a big fresh coconut full of rum punch delicous!!! ! we did a day out at ocean world with the dolphins, it was magical. nice big rooms with great beds, loved how the cleaner makes an elephant or snake out of the towels. i know its sad but got excited about this most days!!! we found beer good, some spirits not as strong as we are used 2, but you can have plenty. visited the other 2 hotels at complex which have a great pool bar and serve smirnoff vodka. if you get chance to see magic show great fun. weather was wonderful bit too hot at times (cant moan) all in all the best holiday of our life, cant wait to go back, who ever goes here is in for a treat-thought i was in heaven!!!!

came to this hotel on the 18th april for 2 weeks! lovely hotel and the entire holiday was spot on and fantastic! the weather was really nice and hot. a little cloudy the 2nd week, but still tanning weather! the staff were very friendly and they couldnt do enough for you! food fantastic! good selection!" grill house is also top class-very hard to get booked in though, you literally have to be down at the restaurant at 6.30am inorder to get a table for that nite. but well worth it!! we went also on the mega trucks trip, it was well good and worth the money. to cut a long story short, ignore the rubbish reviews and get your selfs booked-its amazing and youll defenatilly want to go back, becouse i do already!

My husband and I stayed at Riu Merengue from May 2 to May 5, 2009. Despite all the favorable reviews we found online, it was by far the worst vacation we have ever taken.

It started when we were greeted by one of the front desk staff, who began with a ridiculous monologue consisting of one liners and bad jokes. He boasted about the superior level of service we could expect and then ended his speech by informing us that our room was not ready. He suggested we return in approximately twenty minutes, even though the front desk was filled with hundreds envelopes containing keys to clean and available rooms. Upon our return thirty minutes later, we were told the staff was busy with other guests and that we should come back in an hour. This was totally unacceptable and I refused to wait any longer. Each staff member I spoke to directed me to someone else. Finally, we found someone able to help us and learned that our room had been ready all along.

The website boasts of luxury, five star accommodations, which is why I was extremely disappointed when we were escorted to a tiny, dated guestroom. The bed was two doubles pushed together, there was not a blanket to be found and the toiletries were in paper packets. The mini bar contained a total of two beers and two sodas. In fact, it took an entire day, three phone calls and speaking to a manager before our request to fill the mini bar was addressed.

Obtaining a reservation at one of the “a la carte” restaurants turned out to be impossible. Dinner reservations were taken between the hours of 7:00 and 10:00 am each day. Twice we arrived prior to 8:00 am, only to find out that all the reservations had been taken. I can not understand why a resort with 544 guestrooms, has forty dining tables and only two seatings per night. Basically, a very small percentage of the guests are able to enjoy a sit down meal, while the majority are left to a cafeteria style dinner of repetitive, mediocre food. The dining situation may have not been so bad, if the drinks had not been so watered down and served child size plastic cups.

Perhaps worst of all was the discovery that we happened to choose a weekend that was also a Dominican holiday. Not long after our arrival, hundreds of locals flooded the resort and took it over. The sheer volume of people coupled with the rude and rowdy behavior made getting food or drinks into somewhat of a battle. The locals were catered to by the staff, leaving vacationers feeling like unwanted guests.

We would never return to this hotel and will avoid all Riu properties in the future.

Having read some reviews I was slightly in two minds before going but I have to say it was brilliant.
So much to do, mini bar in room is part of the all inclusive and is re stocked daily. Everywhere is very clean and the food was plentyfull, very tasty as freshly cooked in front of you. The staff are also very good, especially with the kids.
I would advise anyone who goes though to try the Riu Bachatta pool as this is nicer and a bit quieter than the merengue but both are good.
Finally, the fact that there are three hotels to explore meant that even though we didn't go off site we didn't get bored in the two weeks so I would strogly advise this hotel if you get easily bored on your holiday.

The facilities were good, you can use the facilities at all three linked hotels. This was good value for money with all drinks included and the food excellent. There is a main restaurant and you can also book into another restaurant (once) for a special meal. There are free alcohol drinks in the rooms - lager, spirits and also drinking water which are replaced each day. Tip the maid if you want extra special service. The spa is very nice and relaxing with a wide variety of treatments for men and women. The massage I booked was in a private area on the beach with the waves of the sea in the background - very nice. Watersports and snorkling are also available. Puerta Plata can be seen by booking through reception with a recommended cab driver who will drive you around the area for about £25. He will stop in the main square to see the Elizabethan Houses. He will also make stop offs at shops and we felt we were obliged to buy something so be careful of this. Overall this was an excellent hotel and the staff were very friendly and the quality is 5 star. The only reason I rated the location as 4 star is because although the beach is excellent you will need to stay south of the island if you want the clear blue / green sea with lovely fish. I did not realise this before I went.

Just got back from two weeks stay at Riu Merengue.
Read all the reviews before traveling so was a bit unsure of what to expect.
Overall the Hotel is very clean, everybody is really friendly and dont worry about the food as there really is somthing for everybody.
The layout of the hotel is very nice and our room was spotless and cleaned everyday.
The beach is very clean and there is a cooling breeze most of te time, however you can only walk out about six foot before you come to the reef and the water is only up to your waiste so not ideal for swimming but fine if you just want to sit in the shallows to cool down.
Overall the weather was good but we did have three or four days of intermitent heavy rain and there is not much to do when this happens.
The pool area can get very crowded and although you are not officially allowed people do get upo very early to reserve their beds. However we were always able to get beds even if we had to move them.
As I have said the food is ok ! The breakfast is really good with a great selection. Lunch in the snack bar is very repetitive with Hot Dogs, Burgers, Pizza's etc and dinner in the main restaurant was ok although again the menu could be a little repetative.
Tried both the A La Carte restaurants and wouldn't reccoment either !
The animation team work very hard and dont really hassle you although it can be very cheesy and you will have had enough of the same songs and catchphrases after two weeks !
I had read comments that the drinks were not very strong and can confirm that they are definately watered down. Even if you ask for extra Rum or Vodka you will still notice very little change.
Did two trips :
Outback Safari was great and the couple of hours at the remote beach to end the day boogy boarding was fantastic.
Paradise island was also really good but involves an hour by coach to get to the boat then forty five minutes by speed boat out to the Island which can be very bumpy if the sea is a little rough and several people jarred their backs. once you get there the snorkeling is great and on the way back you are treted to a high speed boat ride through the mangrove swamps before lunch on the beach. Unfotunately you then have a two hour coach ride back to your hotel.
The staff at the hotel are lovely and always smiling however, our visit happened to coincide with a Dominican bank holiday and the hotel changed beyond all recognition.
Hundreds of the wealthier local dominicans descended on the hotel and literally took over everything. The restaurant became a free for all long ques ( which the Dominicans ignored) and very rude behaviour which culminated with several arguments between Europeans, Canadians etc and the locals.
The management were seen to side with the locals !!
It took for ever to get a drink at the bar with the locals being served first and we were unable to get a seat to watch the evening show.
The pool is not very big and it was literally full of local children which forced most of holiday makers to opt for the beach.
The hotel is advetised as a five star and I would say at it best it is only a four and over this weekend it was probably only a one !!!
Lots of people were complaining to their respective reps or the hotel management but with little satisfaction.

My boyfriend and I went to the Riu Mambo April 20-27, 2009. It was beyond what was expected. You pay for one but get to "play" at all 3. There is a gazebo up on a hill that you can walk to and the view from there is breathtaking! Also included are many water-sports and snorkeling. The staff is A+++ all the way. Hi Diaz, Aslandro, Perez, Barista~ So very friendly and will go out of their way to make you happy and comfortable. Anyone who stated that the drinks were weak were wrong. If you want it stronger all you have to do is ask and they will gladly oblige. It also seemed as if each bartender had their own "special" and look forward to serving you one or more of them. The food was good and lots of it, as with any all-inclusive it gets a bit boring after a week but they try very hard to 'change it up" a bit every day! Our luggage was lost by NW Airlines and we didn't get it for 2 1/2 days, the staff were very helpful regarding this and despite not having any luggage for the first 2 days we still have a wonderful time. They whole resort is very clean and even at all bathrooms and restaurant entrances are women with hand sanitizer. The expansive private beach is beautiful and very clean. You can always find a lounger and there is also a little drink hut where you can get a cold drink. Also, the night entertainment is very good and on the last night of our stay we ventured in to the disco which was just too much fun! I would recommend this resort to anyone and we are already planning on going back!
