“Lovely”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 March 2012

This hotel was lovely, it was extremely clean and the staff were lovely.
The rooms were basic but clean and the bathrooms were kept spotless by the maids who visted every day.
There was alot of choice on the food menu and the stsff in the restaurant were lovely and couldn't do enough to help including their famous floating coffees (do not go near these if you do not really drink alcohol as they will lead you to be drunk on one cup)
We had fresh fruit and wine delivered to our room for the last 4 days of our 14 day holiday which added a lovely touch to what had already been a fantastic holiday. The beach is also just over a bridge and is breathtaking at sunrise and sunset. We did overhear one person complaining the sand was yellow and apparantly they had been told it was white and were going to complain when they got home - really??????????

Minor Grumble
The gentlemen in yellow t-shirts who are looking to sell time share can sometimes get a little pushy but once you have told them no they do tend to leave you alone
We walked into the shopping centre and some of the men in the shops can be a little touchy-feely which I didn't appreciate so we were only there for 5 mins before I wanted to leave.

I would definitely go back!!

The hotel rooms were average, but the staff were wonderful, the food was good. Its a small resort but it's easy to meet other people there. If you take a horse and buggy ride ask for Tony and his horse poncho. very nice guy. If you want a manicure ( at the beach) ask for Ruth # 80 she does a excellent job! The only down side for me was that the ask you to become a member (Timeshares) I would not do it, It's not for everyone. It was also quite clean there. Also if you want to relax , the rooms in the 1000 , 2000 . are not the greatest place because the nightly entertanment (stage) is right there. you would be better of in the 5000 and up.

This is my first time staying in the Dominican Republick in Puerto Plata, Playa Doradas.
I found the staff at the check-in desk to be very cold to the point of being rude. We had arrived a day later than we had initially planned due to a death in the family and the funeral was scheduled the day we were supposed to check into the hotel. I wasn't sure why were being questioned for arriving late since we had already paid for our vacation in full.

Other than the check-in desk the staff was amazing! Wait staff, bar staff and crew were incredibly friendly and had a great sense of humor.

Warning for all beach lovers, the beach is a public beach and merchants will pester you constantly to purchase something on the beach. I found that it ruined being on the beach. I found if I lifted my head to look at the ocean one of the merchants found that it was and invitation to come and sell us something. We had to wake up at 6:30 to reserve a palapa on the beach. If you wished to reserve a pool umbrella you need to be up earlier.

Please aslo beward that this is a timeshare resort and they will try to sell you a timeshare on the way to the beach. It is very difficult to ignore the timeshare as you have to walk across two bridges to get to the beach. In between the bridges is where the timeshare sales reps are.

Room Tip: We had a garden view room. It was nice and quiet at night. We faced the east and most of the noise f...

This was my first time at this resort, I have stayed at much higher class places and not had as a good a time. Of all the places I have been Blue Bay had the best food. DONT MISS MEXICAN NIGHT!!!!
Ya the rooms were plain and simple but why are you in the room that much anyway? The beach was nice, the staff AMAZING, the pools were nice just everything was positive. If something isnt working, just tell them at the front desk they will fix it. Like nothing ever breaks at home? lets be real.

We did 3 excursions, dune buggies, zip line at monkey jungle, and white water rafting. They are all top notch. I mean, ya take some pics yourself of the dune buggies, video not worth it, but they are awesome people and treat you right and no pressure anyway. BUT PLEASE, do yourself the favour, the rafting, BEST TRIP IN MY LIFE. Gorgeous day, fun, adrenaline pumping, and by far the funniest and nicest guides I have ever seen. This was my gfs first ever trip and I will say the staff and people of the dominican made it hard to top going anywhere else.

I can understand some of the complaints but lets be real, some of the people complaining I do feel just expect a hilton or just wont be pleased no matter what. But really break it down, great food, great beach, great weather, great people that never stop doing all they can to make you happy and enjoy your stay. You can not go wrong, you can spend much more and not be treated as well, and be left with just more money spent. This is the place to go.

Room Tip: by the quiert pool is best, we were next to the stage and still didnt mind it though

Hi:

Positives: like others said pretty clean, nice pools and friendly staff. The rest you have read in the other reviews so I won't bother repeating.

Negatives : THE NOISE, The resort has nightly entertainment that goes on until 11pm which I think for a resort should end at 10. After the show and up to 1-2am you have many drunk people who run around and yell at the top of their lungs so sleep would be impossible. The hotel staff knows this but haven't done anything about it.
Make sure you know what is included in your package, we had the emerald package and on the last day we were told we can get free wifi, couple of free spa sessions and daily fridge restocking.

I enjoyed my stay thier but wouldn't go back because of the noise and the fact that if you are looking for a complete relaxing time you have to look elsewhere.

We had first booked the Grand Amber but after an ownership change and many very poor reviews we switched to the Bluebay because it was ranked #5 of the 48 resorts in Puerto Plata and after all the horror stories we wanted a nice place to relax. The staff were all very nice, the sun was warm, the drinks were cold and the food was good which was great !! We did enjoy the 3 a la cartes ...the grill was our favorite ! However there are some areas lacking and there have been some recent changes that are kind of dissappointing . We arrived at 10 am so our room wasn't ready.. and we expected that ..but it wasn't ready until 5 pm. Then upon leaving our pick up time was 8:50 am so they wanted us to check out at 7:50 am ...which seemed kind of strange to us.. they did extend check out until noon though when our flight was delayed by 4 hours twice...but at 11:30 am our cards were deactivated so they strictly enforce the said check-out time. The advertised 24 hour beach bar and room service... now both end at 1 am. The second bar by the pools is no longer open during the day which made for longer lines. Maid service as many reported is hit and miss... towels taken early morning and not returned until late evening is quite common. The beds were hard and the pillows extremely lumpy. A few new towels, new pillows and some luggage racks and the rooms would be much better. We were in room 2206 and neither our fridge or AC worked. We got a second card key to see if the AC would actually cool our room somewhat when out at the beach however when we returned the maid had turned the AC off and turned our thermostat up to 90* ..not sure what that was all about but it happened 3 days. The venders could certainly be persistant ..I know it's their livelyhood but I paid for a vacation to relax. The timeshare guys didn't really bother us at all but maybe that was because we didn't upgrade our room ..as those with the upgraded bracelets were sought after more with "You are our special guests ...etc ".

We stayed at BlueBay from February 21 till March 6, 2012; this was our 9th visit to the resort since 2006. As usual we had an excellent time because of the hard working and dedicated staff who provided super service and also the guests whom we met, both newcomers and faithful returnees. For us, a retired couple, being able to swim, catch some sun, read as long as we like, listen to podcasts while going for walks on the beach, visit with friends, not shop, have no housework to do, have meals prepared for us equals a good time.

During our holiday we noticed certain austerity measures were put in place, as it happened, the day we arrived. None effected the quality of our holiday. During the day only the swim up bar which has another access at the back, is open for business. The line ups were longer than usual. The stage bar is open in the evenings. Servers do walk around the pool area taking drink requests. The spa bar has only self serve "soft drink" options and an amazing coffee machine which offers regular coffee, espresso, mochachino, cappuccino, caramel coffee, and hot chocolate. The beach bar is still open 24/7 but alcoholic beverages are not available after 1 AM.

Our usual room, 5112, was cleaned beautifully at a reasonable hour each morning. Towels were returned a little later on. As soon as our water bottle was down by 2/3 another was brought to the room. All toiletries were replaced as they were used.

The deck and pools were well cleaned each morning. Cleaners, painters, gardeners and maintenance staff keep the property beautiful. Every year more rooms are upgraded and redecorated.

The buffet restaurant had the usual choices. At breakfast, missing were things like raisins, dates and prunes. However, there were more choices of delicious breads and sweet rolls. Be sure to try the garlic bread available midday. At lunch and dinner there were many new items on the menu thanks to the visiting chef from Spain who has introduced new recipes to the kitchen staff. There were still theme nights featuring menus of various cuisines.

We enjoyed dining at each of the specialty restaurants and were warmly welcomed by the staff who remembered us. The menus have not changed very much. The beef at the grill was hit and miss but the chicken and fish choices were very fine.

The house wine has not improved but there were decent wines available upon request for under $20 US a bottle.

BlueBay is still one of the successes in the Playa Dorada which has been very badly hit by the economic downturn. It was running at capacity during our stay and was fully booked for several weeks in March. We hope that the Playa Dorada Complex can be revitalized. The Plaza has fewer shops open for business. Hemmingways, Roadway and Pizza Hut are still serving. Free wifi can be picked up in the centre of the mall.

Room Tip: The quietest rooms are near the spa in buildings 5, 6, 7 & 8 .
