“Wonderful Adult Vacation”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 April 2014

Have been here 5 times now, staying for 2 weeks in late March. It is a beautiful, clean, well maintained property. Love all-inclusive, adult only. We like that it is smaller, more intimate, quick and easy to navigate anywhere on the property.
Staff is very friendly and always happy to accomodate. Can't say enough about the bar, housekeeping staff. Animation crew is always fun, especially Jaja. She is warm and friendly, organizing games and entertaining guests. We join the daily activities when the mood strikes us and the crew cheerfully accepts a "no" when we don't.
With 3 ala Carte restaurants (Steak, Seafood, Asian), a huge 3x daily buffet, and a beach lunch grill, you will eat too much! A swim up bar pool, a larger 4' deep pool, a smaller, quiet spa pool and an adult beach with huts and beds and an outdoor shower to wash off the salt water gives plenty off water time. Daily beach and pool Volleyball games and free kayaking is available along with pay-per-use parasailing, banana boats, jet skis, and excursions.
A short walk to small mall with pharmacy, bank (not too friendly), stores, bar, $ exchange kiosk.
Blue Bay is a great place to relax, have fun from the moment you enter the lovely open air lobby.

First of all, let it be known that I work for a 4 star hotel that is Forbes inspected. This place will fail this inspection. This is NOT a 4 star hotel, 2 stars...maybe.

Pros:
1) Close to the beach: the beach is very nice
2) Pools are nice and warm
3) Rooms have good A/C
4) Staff is sweet, friendly and engaging. If they had more tools at their disposal, this place has a lot of potential.

Cons:

1) The animation team was not necessary nor essential, just bunch of people making lots of noise, unnecessarily so.

2) THE FOOD IS AWFUL. And I mean, like prison bad, except maybe for breakfast, but how badly could you mess up eggs? And their restaurants suck just as badly. Instead, hail a taxi, go to town, find a shack near the water and you'll be blown away by simple and well-cooked Dominican food

3) They will try to convince that Puerto Plata a dangerous place. It really isn't. We went to the center of the town, people just glanced at you and kept going. Just go to the main road, hail a taxi and it won't be more than 300 pesos to get to the center. Also, don't ask the front desk to get a taxi for you, they'll rip you off. They got us a taxi, told us it won't be more than $35, it ended up costing us $50.

4) Unless you have a deluxe suite or something, the rooms are pretty crummy. My boyfriend and I have traveled to some bad places and stayed in some bad hostels, the rooms look like an average private hostel room.

5) If this place was a 4 star place, as it claims to be, there should be bottled water given at the arrival or at least waiting in the room. You have fetch the water yourself, in these tiny little plastic cups. Since you can't drink their tap water, you need to go out of your room to get it. Its quite inconvenient.

At the end, it is what you make of it. We're not fussy people, so we were fine with most things, but don't expect luxury. Since we also bought this deal on Groupon, we were satisfied. Also, bring a bug spray, TONS OF MOSQUITOS

Had a great time at BlueBay. I was there for a week, and it was my first visit to the Dominican Republic. The service was great and the food was too. The entertainment crew did a marvellous job specially Peki who made our visit more plesent.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 April 2014

Hi just got back from 5 days and 4 nights at the All Inclusive Blue Bay Villas Doradas in Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic Arrived March 30th Departed April 3rd. Let me start off by saying this was my 1st trip to the North part of the Dominican. I have been several time to the South end Punta Cana and loved it does not compare to Puerto Plata they are polar opposites. Now the resort is small and Adults Only however 18 years old = Adult !!!!!! So if you want a quiet relaxing vacation stay away from school break weeks !!!! Over all we had a very nice relaxing stay which was the point of the vacation. The Beach is nice well kept, hotel staff are out there every morning between 6am to 7am cleaning up anything that may have washed ashore overnight, They bring up the lounge chairs every night so if you want a Hut I would suggest getting up at 6am to enjoy the sunrise and get a Hut close to the water if you don’t care about the 1st row of huts arriving at the beach between 7am and 8am would suffice. The hotel also has 4 poster bed like loungers on the beach they are not as protective of the suns rays so if you are fair skinned its worth getting up early for the more protective huts. The Ocean is warm and not rough at all. Complex is small so easy to find everything. Our room was 8112 which is right near the Towel hut (which always had towels) and the Spa & Quiet Pool, and the Bridge to get to the beach (there are no beach front rooms) our room was as close to the beach as you could get and very quiet. The food was good the Steak Place was just ok and you need to pay extra if you want USA steaks they range in price from $18 to $25 extra and the Black & White bar in the lobby is also extra charge which is very confusing for an all-inclusive resort. We ate at all 3 restaurant’s during our stay I would say the best one was the seafood then the oriental then the Buffet and lastly the steak one I have a very sensitive stomach and was fine the whole week so I would say the food is good and not to worry about that. I also drank the water from the restaurant's but not the sink or shower. The staff at the resort is amazing they were always cleaning or doing something always very pleasant. The room was on the small side 2 Chairs a small table king size bed and the bathroom was super small with no shower door so flooding it every time we took a shower got old quick we ended up just putting a bath mat towel down and then putting it out on the small patio chairs to dry out.
Over all we had a nice time the resort is not what we are used to and I would not give it a 4 star rating but I would say 3 stars and the staff really makes the stay enjoyable. We got a good deal on Applevacations.com so we are not going to complain we just had to lower our expectations a little. There are vendors on the beach but once you say not interested they leave you alone. We were not approached by anyone trying to sell us a timeshare so that was nice. Over all for the price it was worth it. We didn't do any excursions since I was just happy being on the beach under my hut reading. There was a small shopping center about a 3 minute walk there was a nice jewelry store there with good prices so if you want something to bring home you will easily find it there .....Also the resort had vendors come in on Wednesday night prices were a bit high but you can negotiate down to what you are willing to pay.

Room Tip: Room 8112 as close to the beach as possible and quiet !!!!

Just back from a 2 week stay and we had a great trip. Victoria and Nelson on the front desk worked very hard to find us a change of rooms when they realized we had some special needs. The room they provided was lovely and seemed to have been recently renovated.
The animation crew was great. trying to include you in everything but not being overly pushy if you chose not to participate. George do la Rosa and Yayi were particularly friendly, worked hard with my attempts at Spanish and very talented during the entertainment. I actually liked their show even more than one of the two groups that were brought in from Puerto Plata to entertain although these shows were also very good
In the dining room Rafael was always very attentive and seems to have made it his business to be able to greet everyone with a few words in their native tongue. Nicaury, a trainee had the most beautiful smile as she worked and nothing was too much trouble to do for you. She will be an asset for sure. Unfortunately I dont recall the hostesses names and they deserve a mantion as they were very attentive.
The bartenders, well there were so many very competent and friendly ones, Diego the trainee with the big smile and genuine interest in everyone. Elizabeth, and Franklin, Rocky and Lorelei, not too bad for someone who drinks very little! But they also made a La Bomba without alcohol which will cure a queasy stomach!!
I found the buffet food to be very good and the a la carte restaurants were a nice change.
The strength of this location is definitely its staff, from Ines the manager and right on down the line. Everywhere you are greeted by big smiles and a willingness to help you with whatever you might need.
My only suggestion would be to have more shade, umbrellas beach huts etc.

Room Tip: For quiet rooms try for something around the spa pool

When myself and 3 other decided on Villas Doradas, we scoured through the trip advisor reviews at the time and were slightly worried. claims of rocky beaches, bad service, terrible food, etc. After returning, I am glad to say that those reviews are dead wrong.

The Bad:
==============
1) the bar in the lobby is cash only. it seems odd to me that they wouldn't at least have it as a regular bar with premium at a price on top. The entire time we were there, we saw 1 person at that bar.

2) the steakhouse could have benefited from a sign as we all thought it was the seafood restaurant (what with the fishes painted on the wall) and waited 15 mins by the seafood side (which was closed that day) before anyone asked us if we needed a hand.

once we got in, I was rather disappointed by the beef, but that could merely be from being spoiled by Alberta beef.

3) the "DJ" seemed to have many technical difficulties and a poor understanding of audio design as the sound at the stage was often overly distorted. there were also long periods during the karaoke night where he was unable to bring up the right song, and got it wrong on several occasions.

4) with that being said... I love that the animation crew has a theme song, but by the end of the week, I was so sick of it as it was also being used for filler during technical difficulties and what not. in fact for the first day there, I could have sworn the DJ only had 2 songs as I only heard the animation crew song and the vengaboys... ALL DAY.

these 4 things are the only things in my mind that brought it down to a 4/5 (though it is more of a 4.5)

The good
===============
1) the food at the buffet was always good, and there was something different every day. and as an added bonus, everything tasted the way it should have.

2) the food at the asian restaurant was incredible. our group of 4 ended up going there a few times

3) the local beer is quite tasty, but the drinks they were mixing were much better, never tasted watered down, and often ended up more on the side of too strong...

4) the house white was very crisp and refreshing. a simple wine to pair with most anything you want to eat. I found the red to be a little to fruity, and did not pair as well with the meats as the white did.

The AMAZING
==================

Special mention HAS to be given to Modesa, Miguel, and Rodolfo in the Asian restaurant. they truly treated us like family there from the moment we sat down.

after they found out that all 4 of us were celebrating birthdays, and that we were going to be dining at the asian place again, they put up baloons at our table, and opened a bottle of champagne for us, and gave the 4 of us a whole cake.... with chocolate drizzle on our individual plates, and an extra plate with a happy birthday message in chocolate and strawberry drizzle.

I hope the bluebay management reads all of this because those three are the kinds of people that will make a great vacation into an unforgettable one.

Room Tip: Ask for a Room near the Spa for quieter room, Building 5 is the best.

Some of the reviews we read, we were starting to wonder if we made the right decision. WE DID! The resort was exactly what we wanted. Adult only, a little quieter and smaller. The rooms were ready when we got there, and were larger than I expected. The food was very good at the buffet, and the a la carte's were all good (the Asian Fusion was above all the rest). The staff did everything they could for us. The beach was windy (you can't control the weather), but the pools were perfect.

Stand out service from Rafiel (buffet room), Modesta and Migeal (Asian Fusion), Toby (cab driver for the day), Johnny (front desk).

Only down side was the animation team. They tried, but there was always technical issues. And some of the activities that were scheduled never happened.

We are already talking about going back next year. We had so much fun!!

Room Tip: Building 3 is right beside the night activities. Louder, but it wraps up around 11 pm. We were fine...
