“Amazing trip”
Reviewed 17 September 2012

We were a pair of travelers (early 20s) skeptical at first of the reviews on this site but decided to go for it. We went for a week and returned on September 14.

One of the most amazing aspects of the resort was the people there. The employees there were all very friendly (minus a few at the gourmet and Mexican a la carte restaurants). The ones who stood out were Cugi/Coogi (not sure of the spelling here) and Danny. They were extremely friendly and helpful. They work long hours here, and it's great to see them always cheerful and energetic. They also remembered our names and always said hi to us.

As for the food, I didn't like the buffets. After the second day, I was sick of the food, but my friend loved it all. The Mexican and Brazilian a la carte restaurants were the best, especially the Brazilian one. Make sure to get your reservations! The snack bar was alright, and I liked the fries and chicken. The dinner buffer had different cuisine for each day of the week. I only enjoyed the Italian one wholeheartedly. The drinks were okay, but the Coke seemed to taste weird to me. The water was also weird at first, but then you get used to it. The fruit drinks were really tasty, so be sure to try those!

We never really spent that much time in our rooms other than sleeping and showering, so it didn't really matter to us. We had 2 double beds, a TV on which we watched a lot of awesome American shows (The Big Bang Theory, Friends, etc), a mini fridge stocked with Coke, Sprite, and 2 cans of Presidente. It wasn't very cold, but it kept the drinks fairly cool. The washroom was alright, but we had to request extra towels. There was also a coffee maker in the washroom, which we didn't use at all, since it's in such an odd location. Washroom... really?

The grounds were smaller than we expected, but it was great nonetheless. They kept it clean and we saw people hard at work all the time. The pool is amazing, and the bar beside it kept us hydrated. The beach is great too, and be careful because if you don't watch the waves while swimming, you might just get a mouthful of saltwater.

On the beach there are locals trying to get you to get your hair braided, or to go to the marketplace, etc. Don't entertain them and say you'll come later, because they'll remember you and approach you again if they see you. A firm "No" will suffice and they will go away.

We went on one excursion called "Runners". We paid $75USD for it and looked at a school, homes, how they made tobacco, and had some fresh fruits and coconut. We also rode on horses to a nice beach area and napped in hammocks!

In general, we had an amazing time! Will be back in the Dominican, but we want to go to Punta Cana next.

Remember to leave tip here and there, they work so hard! Bring USD!!!

Travelled August 2012, with a group of 6 (Mum, Dad (50s), myself + boyfriend, my sister + boyfriend (20s) ).

Have been to 8 other hotels in the Dominican Republic, so plenty to compare it to, and it does compare well.

Transfer great as less than half an hour from the airport (many hotels are over an hour), so great positioning.

Beach: the best bit of beach along that section of waterfront (much less sea weed, and I'm fussy about the sea!!), as we walked along past Gran Ventana/Casa Colonial/etc and definitely liked ours best! Had a nose inside those hotels too, and still liked ours best! Sandy, no rocks.

Pool: one big pool, with 3 sections. Thought this would be strange, as used to having one quiet one, one activities pool, one kids one, etc... but this worked well.

Food: probably the best choice we've had in the Dom Rep. LOADS to choose from, every meal. Pancake and Egg men in the morning (making them fresh), plus smoothie ladies (same), loads of fruit every meal, meat great especially in the evening, with 2 fresh carvery/hot plates with chefs serving. Chocolate brownies were amazing!! Snack bar always open, with pasta, burgers, hot dogs, chips, bit of veg & salad, rice. Overall, not one complaint.

Entertainment: not many entertainers compared to other places we've been to over the last 10 years, BUT I think that's due to recession and probably happening everywhere. Usually around 3 entertainers running daytime activities - usually 10am table tennis/darts, 11am beach volleyball / pool game, water aerobics, afternoon - water polo, poolside game, beach volleyball again (everyone wanted to play so was played a lot), and more. Denzel Washington does a great job, and Hector & CoochieCoochie were both good fun too. Thanks for all the games.
Evening - same sort of shows at all other Dom Rep hotels, so if you've not been before, you're in for a treat - comedy shows and dancing shows, the usual.

Trips: done most Dom Rep trips by now, but did go to Sosua Bay for snorkeling, with Martinez's company, he was Beach Seller No. 4. Good price, but do make sure you haggle everyone down ($30 each, we got it for).

Basically, if you're not a massive snob and are with friends/family, you'll have a lovely time as it's a nice place. Do borrow the board games available from the towel hut for the evenings, as entertainment is finished by 10.30pm - good to sit down the snack bar with them.

Don't worry about it if you're booked in and looking at the bad reviews. You'll have a lovely time.

Room Tip: Block 4 was perfect if you like to be near both the pool and the beach, and the buffet too (not faci...

Travelled Jan 8-15, 2012 as couple, early 20s. The weather was great for the duration, even though forecast said might rain. Was beautiful, sunny whole 7 days. Transfer and check in was fast. Our agent requested a head of time ocean view room on second floor like we love. We got it with a smile and no extra charge :D which made our trip more special and welcoming.

Service was good for most part everywhere, slow sometimes at bars as there are longer waits, but we were never in rush. Bring insulated mugs.

The resort is situated on beautiful grounds that are well taken care of. Cleaned even from puddles near buffet area.

Room was great clean, big enough, everything worked. Ocean view is epic. Fridge restocked daily. Maid did great job cleaning it.

I was very disappointed in mixed drinks as they were using some pre-mixed stuff which didn't taste remotely of pina colada or mojito. (-* for that).

The three a la cartes were good. Gormet one had a more high class decorated feel to it, but air felt a bit dusty (probably, laundry of curtains done rarely). Mexican I enjoyed most as it was in fresh air, open feel and only there I got the best mixed drink brought to me too. Least favourite was the Brazilian as it was 1/2 buffet style where you get your own sides (not what I expect going to a la carte). The only thing that was brought around were shish kabobs of different meats (chicken, veal, pork and beef) you get to choose or try all. Veal was good but long wait. The sides lacked flavour compared to buffet.

Buffet always had great selection with themed nights. Always found flavourful, I don't know what people are complaining about. Just because it might look unappetizing, doesn't mean it tasted bad. Try as you are in a different country. Better food then Cuba for sure. Dress code in effect. We only chose white wine for our dinners as the red house wine tasted bad.

Snack bar near beach had small selection but everything it had was amazing for a quick grab (which we had most days for lunch as you need to be dressed to enter buffet).

Trip of a life time: The waterfalls!!!! book it, so worth every dollar (~$75). But bring waterproof camera and water shoes. You get to farm from which you take a hike up a mountain with beautiful scenery (takes about 1.5 hours). The guides stop and explain some of the of local fauna to make trip more interesting. Then you go down a mountain by river and jumping off around 6 waterfalls ranging 3 - 14 meter! Very exciting and challenging as I'm afraid of hight. You also get a delicious Dominican home made lunch and drinks at the farm afterwards. If you don't have waterproof camera, you can buy the DVD for $25 (which we did) that they bring in evening to your hotel lobby.

Room Tip: See if you or your agent can request ocean view on 2nd or 3rd floor.

just returned back from the be live grand marien hotel. we arrived on the 25th of August for 2 weeks all inclusive. we had a nice flight with thomas cook and the transfer from airport to hotel was only 20 minutes. booking in at reception was quick and easy and we were greated with a nice cool cocktail. four of us travelled, me my wife, my son and his girlfriend. we stayed in block 4 middle floor room number 4210, the room was clean spacious and you could see the beach from our room. the room was quiet and sleep quality was good apart from the first weekend when the locals arrived. i did complain about this as they were very noisy on the friday with them shouting, slamming doors and running up and down the corridor, however after complaining at reception this was sorted very quickly and the following weekend was more quiet. the beach was very nice and the sea nice and warm but a lot of seaweed around and the sea not as clear as some other parts of dr. you do get vendors trying to sell you stuff on the beach but a no thank you and in general they leave you alone. the 2 pools were very clean and spacious, you could get sunbeds any time of the day but they could do with more parasols. the food was good, no tummy upsets and they had 3 special restaurants all good apart from the brazillion, the gourmet restaurent was our fav because the steaks were excellent. the beer was ok and the cocktail list and taste very good. never went to the entertainment so can't comment but my son bradley played mr and mrs one evening and gary and his family from norwich said it was very funny. i can't fault any of the staff as they were all friendly and work very hard. also thanks to helen the thomas cook rep who was helpful and who we have met for the second time. did get a few bites from insects during the day but not to bad. going to cuba next year but would return to this hotel again no probs.

Room Tip: complex 4 is by the beach we had room 4210 but next time we will request top floor so this would be...

We stayed at the Be Live for 2 weeks at the end of Aug & were a party of 7. Check in was quick & efficient & we were given 3 rooms next door to each other in block 4. All the rooms were adequate, they are in the older blocks so the décor was a bit dated, but not mouldy or musky at all. Block 4 is in a perfect location, from our balcony you can see the beach & it’s a 1 min walk to both the beach, snack bar & 2 of the restaurants (Mexican and Brazilian). The pool is also really close, just a 2 min walk.
Upon checking into the room we realised that the balcony door was broken and called reception straight away. It did take a couple of hours and a few calls to get someone to fix it but when they came they fixed it quickly & also went to our family’s rooms next door to fix theirs as well & the maintenance guy was very friendly and welcoming! We had to call them a couple more times throughout our stay and they were much quicker to respond.
The room has a fridge that was re-stocked every day with beer & sodas, a TV with satalite channels, & an alarm clock (so we never missed breakfast)! The housekeeping was exemplary! Our rooms were cleaned every day & towels changed every day. Our housekeeper even figured our routine & only cleaned the room when we were by the pool as to not disturb us in the mornings!
The pool area is amazing! It’s so big, 3 pools in one. So there is always somewhere to relax & have some peace if you don’t want to join in animation activities. You have to be up early to get the beds under the shades! Only downside is there is only 1 bar so can get quite busy especially at weekends when the locals arrive, but the barmen are excellent! The activities were standard AI. Pool games – water polo, volleyball, & aerobics in the morning. Then darts, strong man, Mr sexy etc. All fun if you wanna take part & the animation team are not pushy if you don’t. I judged Mr Sexy twice and had great fun!!! The team work really hard & are so friendly. Special shout out to Cuchi & Denzel who deserve big applause applause!!!! They have life guards at the weekend when the pools are a lot busier & they ensure drinks, smoking, diving from bridges etc. are kept under control. There is a rec area next to the pool hut where you get beach towels with pool tables, table football and table tennis. The water sports guys are not pushy but do hunt out new faces by the pool. We did the scuba taster with Xabian and planned to book a dive but due to illness we had to give it a miss & he was very understanding. They also play music by the pool but its not blaring or techno so no complaints here!
The beach is clean and there is lots of shade with the bed canopies & loads of sunbeds. It’s much cooler down there but there are a lot of vendors. A gentle ‘no gracias’ will see most of them away & we certainly didn’t feel harassed.
The food was excellent, by far the best I have had in the DR and this is my 4th trip! The buffet had lots of choice & none of us ever went hungry. The staff in the buffet were amazing, we didn’t even tip and they remembered us every night and always had a large table ready for our party. The maître d' girls (front of house) were superb and always stopped for a chat and to ask how the holiday was going. The breakfast was amazing with eggs and pancakes stations, a fruit bar and smoothies to die for! The a la carte restaurants were top class!!!! The gourmet was a little slow in terms of service, but the food was good. The Mexican and Brazilian were fabulous!!! The waiting staff in the Mexican and Brazilian were rotated and deserve a HUGE gold star! Special shout out to Ronald , Dany, Froiland, Frank & Tatiaana who are the funniest guys ever and work very hard. Thanks for all the shots guys! The snack bar is excellent for grabbing a quick bite. It serves burgers, pizza, chips, hotdogs and a selection of other hot foods, as well as salads and fruit. It is also opened through the night which is great when you want some food after a night out.
The evening entertainment was ok & the animation team work really hard. It’s the standard dance shows, magicians, comedians and audience participation - Mr & Mrs; karaoke; Mr be live. It lasts about an hour and then the hotel disco opens till 1am & later on the weekend. The disco plays majority Dominican music along with some dance-pop. It’s packed at the weekends and has a great atmosphere but is quiet during the week. You can drink after the show at the beach bar, pool bar and lobby if you just wanna relax.
There is also a nightclub (pure) and casino (Dreams) next to the hotel which I highly recommend. It’s free in and you can crawl back to the hotel after a few Cuba libres! The staff at Pure are really nice and the music is a mix of rnb, hip hop, pop and Dominican. Thursday night is stripper night… think magic mike lol! We also went out of the resort to party. Coco bongos in playa dorada is very quiet now apart from at the weekend. But Tuesdays is ladies night with free rum and coke all night for ladies. A taxi from Be live to coco bongos is around 300 peso or 550 return. One night our taxi driver waited there for us until we wanted to leave. We also went to Cabaret (oonoos) & Sosua (classico) the later is not for the faint hearted, lots of working ladies, but the music is awesome!
The onsite Spa is a nice addition and is very plush. We used the hairdresser multiple times during our stay as a blow-dry was only $10! The women were very friendly and always welcoming, fitting us in at any time & service was very good. There is also a gym right at the front of the hotel as you enter through the gate. It has limited equipment but it serves its purpose if you want to work out a little and it always has an instructor to help with the machines.
The photographers on site were quite annoying. They should just walk around & if people want photos they go to them. Not shove animals in your face everyday and accost you on your way to dinner every evening insisting you take ‘just one picture’. Also the sellers outside the buffet are annoying too. They all sell the same things and beg/accost you to go to their table! It’s annoying & uncomfortable & they shouldn’t be so pushy.
Also the security around the hotel was tight, very tight! I guess it’s a good thing, but some took their job way too seriously and wouldn’t let us play a simple prank on our brother even though they had seen us all together for 2 weeks and we explained the joke to them.
Playa dorada was like a ghost town which was shocking as we have been there a few times. Hemmingways & Roadways are both closed. We booked some trips with James Tours & he was telling us how much businesses have been affected.
James tours was by far the cheapest for trips. The catamaran trip was $83 with Thomas cook, $70-65 with vendors on the beach & $50 with James Tours! He’s in the plaza next to Phil’s Bar.
FINNALY… All this moaning about locals is well out of order! They deserve a holiday too people! The hotel was definitely livelier with them there. I think people are intimidated more by the increase in volume and lively nature of the people more than anything, but embrace the Latin spirit and just carry on enjoying your holiday and I’m sure you will have fun!

Room Tip: block 4 is right by the beach and pool and snack bar

We returned from this hotel on Sunday 09th September. I was a little bit dubious about coming to this hotel after reading some of the reviews on here.
I will write as honestly as i can, i will start with the bad points, not that there were many.
1. The biggest problem we had with this hotel and generally everywhere we went outside the hotel, were the "vendors". They are on the beach and everywhere you go someone wants to "take you to my shop". I'll explain a bit more about the "vendors" and then i will explain why it was a problem at the hotel.
When you are spotted, more so when you first arrive, they will approach you and try to sell you almost anything, it is generally excursions and local goods. The "vendors" are quite forceful with their selling techniques and won't take no for an answer unless you are very rude to them. They also try to charge ridiculous prices, for example, my 14 year old son was on the hotels part of the beach when he was approached by a "vendor", they forced the sale of a smoking pipe, for which he neither had any use for or wanted and also a tacky silver coloured necklace, that at a local fashion retailer would cost no more than £5, my son told him he didn't have any money and didn't want the things, but he insisted that he take the stuff and bring him $55, when we found out what had happened, my husband took the stuff back to the "vendor". Whilst it was bad enough for us to avoid the beach, the "vendors" were given spots outside the hotels main dining hall making it impossible to avoid them, they would be very persistant and again try to force the sale of cheap items for stupid amounts of money. Another unpleasant experience happened to my 10 year old son. We had decided to have an evening without the children and left my 16 year old to take my youngest son to dinner, the "vendors approached my 10 year old, tried to sell him a necklace for $45, when my 10 year old told him that he had no money, the "vendor" patted my sons pockets to check and told him to return to us to get some money. As you can imagine this infuriated us and we had no choice but to complain to the hotel as this was now starting to ruin our holiday. The hotel were horrified by what had happened and spoke with the "vendors" and we had no more problems with them within the hotel grounds.
2. Whilst the food was of an ok standard, there wasn't much for the children to eat and they never served jacket potatoes or chips in the main dining hall of an evening so trying to make a decent meal and trying to please the kids was almost impossible, they would often wait until the snack bar opened at 10.30pm to eat, i would have preferred to have eat with them.
3. The locals.....what can i say about the locals, the hotel allows locals to book into the hotel at weekends, usually friday afternoon to sunday afternoon and they literally take over, while i found a few to be friendly, most were quite rude and would never move out of the way. They would push in at the bar, but the barstaff are awesome and would send them to the back of the que. Once they are gone peace is restored.

They are really the only problems we had and by the 2nd week we had learnt to deal with them so didn't let it affect the holiday.

Now for the good points
The hotel on arrival was very welcoming, we were served a cold refreshing drink whilst waiting to check in. The reception staff were very friendly and efficient and would deal with any problems or queries straight away.
We were given our room in block 4, which was clean although a little dated. The room was cleaned daily and the mini fridge was re stocked most days with beer, water , coke and sprite. There was a coffee machine and a hairdryer, as well as an iron and small ironing board. All rooms had t.v.
We were overlooking the snack bar with the beach to our left so amenities were all close by.
The pool area was kept very clean and had security staff patrolling the whole site.
There are 3 speciality eating establishments, the mexican, the gourmet and the rodizian ( the brazillian). We tried all 3 and without a doubt the brazillian was the best for us. We do find that they like most of their meat cooked and served very rare so you do have to ask them to cook the meat for longer if you don't like blood.
The staff throughout the hotel were exceptional, from the maids and waiting staff to management all were so helpful and nice.
Our maid was always happy to say hello and would leave flowers in out room.
The bar staff especially " Carlos" who was by far our favourite bar man would make great cocktails and would work very hard.
The waiting staff would always make sure you had your water glass filled at the table and would whisk plates from they table as soon as you were finshed.
The entertainment staff especially "Denzil" were great at trying to keep you entertained throughout the day and night, with water polo and competitions around the pool.
Overall we had a nice holiday but felt a little bored in the evenings.
I wouldn't go back as i feel the locals are putting off the tourists, its sad to see as when we visited the same place back in 2003, there were none of these problems, but the people have become greedy and it is very off putting. Even when we went on an excursion to the waterfalls we were taken to 4 different places to try to sell us stuff, all they want to do is sell and it drives you mad.
This may have been a bit long winded but wanted to be as honest as possible.,

Room Tip: Block 4 was quite a nice block as it overlooked thew beach, was opposite the snack bar, and apart fr...

I came here with my family of six in early September. We only have good things to say about the resort. We all had a wonderful experience.
Rooms- We had standard rooms, those were gorgeous. The beds were spacious, there was a flat screen TV, a mini fridge, coffee maker and many other nice amenities. Not to mention the bathroom had a jacuzzi tub and great AC.
Food- The food was good, I personally preferred the Dominican buffet on saturdays. We only ate at the Buffet Restaurant and Snack Bar, we were definitely left satisfied! There are bars everywhere on the resort, and we all enjoyed the drinks they had to offer.
Entertainment- Our family really enjoyed the entertainment. The shows at night were fun to watch and the games by the pool made us laugh. The entertainment staff was very charismatic and friendly!
Pool- The pool is amazing. We all couldn't have enough.
Beach- The beach was beautiful, although there was seaweed and some washed up on the sand, its still a beach, it belongs there. But that will definitely not deter you from enjoying the beach. DR offers the best beaches ever.
Overall, the resort was relaxing, enjoyable and very pleasing. One tip is that it's emptier on weekdays because locals come in on weekends. They also have a casino, disco, spa, and gym on site if you're interested. It's also a great resort for couples.
