“Just back!!! 9/23-27”
Reviewed 29 September 2012

I just returned from the Be Live Gran Marien and would like to share my experience.

Check-in-Horrible!!! It was a local holiday and there were lots of people trying to check in. I will give the staff credit for trying to keep it orderly, but the local people kept pushing and yelling for attention. This is not the hotel's fault, but there was no organization and they were not well staffed.

The food-average. I am not picky and neither are the others I traveled with (my husband, sister 50, and mother 70). The buffet variety was limited, but we always found something to fill us up. The burgers at the snack bar were good. We ate at all three speciality restaurants and they were all good. Danny with the waitstaff was always right there and made sure we were well taken care of!!!

The room-average. We were in block 1. I had requested a king bed, we got doubles so my husband and I had to sleep in separate beds our whole vacation. The room as a whole needs to be updated. The refrigerator looked like something from 1970. The finish on our bathtub was flaking, the lamp on the nightstand had to be jiggled before it would come on, the light bulb on our patio was out and we had no clock radio in our room. These things were no big deal and I did not report them to management, but the room as a whole was a disappointment.

The beach-there was some seaweed, but hey...it's the beach and any beach is better than working!! It was beautiful, there were plenty of chairs. The vendors came by but if you told them no, they left you alone.

The excursions-we did not do this through the hotel, but I have to mention! We booked both of our excursion through James at Tours by James. He was so easy to work with and his suggestions were awesome! We chartered a boat and ent deep sea fishing. The captain was Mateo and he and his crew were GREAT. Sandwiches, chips and drinks were included. It was a new boat and we even hooked a 300+lb blue marlin that broke the line right as we got it to the boat!! Amazing experience even though we lost the fish!! Our 2nd excursion was the city tour and cable car ride with Diaz as our tour guide. He was so informative and answered all of our questions. A truly, educational and wonderful experience. We had taken some school supplies for the children at a school that was not part of the usual tours and Jame arranged for us to visit the school and see the children. Seeing their faces and playing with them was such a rewarding experience!

The nightly entertainment was great.

Puerto Plata is beautiful and I don't think you could have a bad vacation. Would I recommend to a friend? Yes and no. Yes, if they want an economical vacation. Ours was about $1400USD for 5 days and four nights. No, if they want 5 star facilities and a luxury vacation. Would I go back? Yes. I know what to expect and would not be disappointed.

The staff was extremely kind and the food was excellent. The hotel was extremely close to the private beach, it had two large and not at all crowded pools, a lot of fun activities. In the evening there were funny shows with the entertainment crew of the hotel.

The hotel is nice enough, and you cant beat the weather in the Dom Rep for a beach holiday. I dont think its really 4 stars all round though, things are getting a little worn out around the edges. The wooden furniture in the rooms was a bit tatty for example, drawers sticking or coming off rails, etc but the bed is large and comfy and the bathroom large and everything is clean. To be honest nothing last too long in the Caribbean before it starts to wear out due to the heat, humidity, sea air and weapons grade insects. The antique furniture sort of fitted the charm of the place.

The main buffet restaurant and theme restaurants are fine, the little snack bar area at the beach which takes the strain while the others are closed is a bit limited though. There tends to be queues at the bars as well, as people try to keep hydrated/drunk in the 35 degree heat. It has a huge pool area, really 3 pools in one, but I preferred to swim in the sea as the beach gets a cooling breeze and the water is 30 degrees anyway. The pool area on the other hand is like a furnace as the stone tiles reflect the heat.

The beach is fine for swimming, warm water and lots of shade under the trees if you want. Dont expect snorkelling or lots of water sports though, there's too much sand kicked up by the waves. The beach is reasonably quiet, not many hawkers and souvenier sales folks compared to the larger complex a couple of miles nearer the airport. The hotel shares grounds and the beach with the Iberostar hotel, which is a bit newer and posher, but doesn't have anywhere near as large a pool complex and the beach at that side is not as nice for swimming due to weeds & coral.

All the Caribbean locations are suffering in the current global economic downturn, the hotels were not even half full so there was plenty of sun loungers and tables to go round. It also means you get an all-inclusive Caribbean holiday for the price of a half board holiday in the Med countries. For a relaxing beach holiday on a budget you cant beat the Dominican Republic. Take an extra few hundred in US dollars though, as you will want to go on excursions to get out the hotel complex. Trips to the mountain areas, rafting, swimming with dolphins, etc are all available, usually between $50-120 a head depending on what you're doing. Take the cash with you, as exchanging when there is not easy and expensive.

Room Tip: Rooms are in 8 separate buildings, and building 4 has rooms that directly overlook the beach and are...

This was our first time in Puerto Plata, we decided to book this trip because it was cheap and we just needed a vacation! We were glad that we didn't pay alot for this resort...otherwise we would have been pretty diasppointed. However, it is a decent resort if you get a really good deal.

HOTEL

-This resort claims to be a 4.5-star resort...however I think it's closer to a 3-star.
-Main lobby is well-kept, except there is no lobby bar.
-Check-in/Check-out is very busy on the weekends as they let the locals in.

ROOM

-Typical resort room...we were in 4108 on the ground floor.
-A/C worked very well.
-TV was very old and kept shutting off every 10 minutes...remote did not have batteries in it.
-Bathroom was very well lit (not common in resorts) this was really nice! Tub train clogs easily esp. for females with long hair. Toilet flush system is very weak...they have signs to throw your toilet paper in the garbage instead of flushing it, which I find is super gross!
-Coffee maker is in the bathroom as well (a little strange, but whatever!) Make sure that you clean it well, along with the mugs as ours still had lipstick on it and the coffee maker had bugs in it.
-Make sure to bring your own toiletries, as they do not supply shampoo or conditioner. They have body wash in the showers, but it smells like bugspray/Lysol...so bring your own!

FOOD/DRINKS

-We thought the food was ok...there was always something to eat, but was it good? Not really.
-Drinks are good but very strong...we mostly stuck with the beer.
-Buffets are outdoors, so in the hot/humid months the food is stale and the cheese is sweaty.
-We did not like the gourmet restaurant, however we really enjoyed the mexican and brazilian. The margaritas at the mexican restaurant were great! :)

-The locals take over the resort on the weekends. We found this highly annoying because they were very rude. They cut in line for everything. For example, we were in line at the buffet and my friend went to go grab the spoon to serve herself and a local jumped right in and grabbed the spoon away from her. That was just plain disrespect. You can say whatever you want to them, but they just act like you don't exist, so I wouldn't bother.
Try to go on an excursion on the weekend to get away.

-Make sure to go to the meeting with your rep. the following morning. They will tell you about the clubs, drinks, food, bartering etc.

-We did not go to the club Pure, as we were advised by our rep. not to. He said that if you want to go, just go for one drink then leave. This club/disco is NOT resort property. It is open to all locals and is at prime for both male & female prostitution.

-All in all, this was an average vacation...thankfully the weather was great.
-Would I recommend this resort? No.

Four of my friends and I spent 5 days here (9/19-9/24) and had a really good time. We were in rooms 8120 and 8128, both with two full sized beds, and when we asked for an extra cot for the 5th guy, they brought us a whole twin sized mattress and box spring set which fit nicely. Our rooms were ground floor, with sliding glass door access to a mini-porch with a few chairs and a table, and we were never more than a 20 second walk to the pool or a bar to grab drinks. The staff was great, speaking enough english to make things smooth if we needed help, and they were super energetic and professional. We didn't go to any of the shows, but they did a good job of keeping things exciting by the pool and the beach with games like water polo (which we dominated in, just ask them about Jenni and Mr. Sexy-Head) strongest man and beach volleyball. The mosquitos were bad for two of us, but with or without Off spray, they left the rest of us alone. I think they may have gotten into the ventilation systems in the hotel because we kept seeing them by the vents in the bathroom. Other than that, no pest problem (except some of the vendors). The buffets for breakfast and throughout the day are pretty good, but some stuff was hit or miss. They make surprisingly good french fries and fried chicken, but the chicken is apparently only late night. Anything else american tended to be subpar, like the hot dogs and hamburgers, which they just didn't understand how to serve, but if you need a quick bite, the lines are either short or non-existant so it kinda balances out. I'd just make reservations for dinner at one of the three restaurants, especially the brazilian and the mexican spots. The mexican spot has a menu you actually order from, and I recommend the shrimp seviche, the quesadillas, the tacos and the fajitas. The brazilian restaurant is basically buffet style for sides and skewered meats brought to your table every few minutes. They ran through steak, roasted pork, chicken, turkey etc. and shaved you as much as you want right at your table. The weather was great, the beach was beautiful, no complaints there. I didn't go to the casino, but we did go to the club above it, Pure. Super packed, high energy place, good mix of Dominican/Spanish music and American hip-hop/pop, kept everybody happy. Just watch out for the girls (and guys in some cases) looking to proposition you for a night at a cabaña. We didn't have any safety/security issues during our stay, nobody breaking into our rooms , and we even left some clothing, cigarrettes and cuban cigars out on our porch, which anyone can walk right up to, and nobody ever touched any of it. Vendors here are like they are anywhere else in the world, and like homeless people in most major cities, they try to push with sympathy, but a strong NO gets rid of them. Some are really nice though, and you can haggle for a nice deal here and there. As a side note, while I was in the pool one day, two guys came up to me with a monkey and had him sit on my head and my arm and took pictures that they'd sell me later. That was kind of awesome. On the down side, some of the guests there were really disrespectful, jumping lines and being generally rude. We found out that the last few days we were there the resort played host to a swell of Dominican guests from other towns and cities due to a holiday there, and the pool, buffets and bar lines were ridiculous. But apart from that, there was never the feeling that there were too many people or too few on the resort, it had a good balance. We're all single, but this resort is nice for couples and families too.

Hi me and my family and four friends stayed at the hotel from the 6th september we found the hotel really good the food was amazing couldn't fault it at all the staff were very friendly always game for a laugh .Would definately recommend the alacarte .The room's were very basic but clean and tidy, the beach was litterally on our doorstep very nice indeed ,we were told by our rep not to venture left on the beach apast the sign's as it wasn't safe ,stick to the right and you will be fine ,one day we did walk along the beach for about 45 min's to the shopping mall ,yes we were approached by local trader's trying to get us to go to there shop's but once we said we will visit on the way back they did'nt bother us ,we spent a couple of hours there before returning ,a very enjoyable experience.I must say we did hear about the breakin of some of the rooms but heared different stories ? The man who had his necklase pinched had traveled past the signs wich do warn you that the security do not patrol that end ,so that tell's me it's proberly best to stay away from there,we all found the rep helen really helpfull never had one like her.The locals came in on both weekends but wasn't bothered as it did'nt spoil the holiday and as for the Prostitutes ?where were they As i have said really loved it the location ,the resort and mostly the staff ,thanks for a great holiday an great memories we enjoyed every bit . A big thanks to all would definately be visiting the Dominican again :)

We booked this hotel as a late deal on quite a tight budget so knew that there was a chance the hotels we had to choose from could all have their faults. We picked this one as it had a better selection of al a carte restaurants, slightly better reviews and was closer to the airport than the others we were looking at but there wasn't a lot in it going by the information your given online.

When we arrived we were so pleased with our choice! We were 20mins from the airport, the first drop-off, which is wonderful after a 9 hour flight! The building and gardens appeared very well kept and check-in was quick and painless so a great start, however we found out the room safes were about $30 a week, extortionate! The room was probably the worst thing about the hotel but only because of how dated it was. We never really consider this a problem though, as long as the furniture isn't falling apart with age and its still functional then whats the issue? The bed was very comfortable and seemed to be the most modern thing in the room which is the main thing i suppose as we didn't spend much time in the room apart from sleepy. The tv only had one english channel, sport, but we didn't watch much tv anyway. The worst thing of the whole holiday was the mosquitos so make sure you take lots of repellent! We would have taken a plug in repellant for the room had we known how bad it would be. We only opened the doors of our room to rush out into the hall but they still got in some how. We must have killed at least 20 a day in our room. The room was fumigated mid holiday but 2 days later the numbers were right back up again. Not really a problem with the hotel, just the Dominican Republic in general i suppose. The maid kept the room really clean and restocked the fridge fairly well but didn't renew the coffee cream after we'd used them up within 3 days which was frustrating.

The food was fantastic! Plenty of variety and choice for breakfast, both lunch eaterys, the evening buffet and the a la cartes! We were stunned at the quality! You can visit each a la carte once a week too which is more than some places have to offer.

We did lots of excursions and because of the location of the hotel we were mostly picked up last and dropped back first which saved us loads of time. We went with a lot of other thomson/firstchoice people staying at rui merengue/bachata who seemed to always be the first pick up and last drop off as they are far out to the opposite side of puerta plata so if you can't decide between these 3 hotels (like we couldnt) i would recommend be live just because of the time you save when doing excursions.

The hotel gym and tennis courts are free and of a reasonable quality plus the hotel itself was fairly quite while we were there so plenty of availabity for everyting including sunbeds. This changed at the weekend around the pool when the locals arrive but the beach still remains really quiet so theres always somewhere to lounge about quietly.

We went into Puerta Plata on the bus as its about 20 mins from the hotel but there is nothing there because all hotels are all inclusive. No main shopping, tourist area like i had expected. You just have to buy stuff at hotel shops or on excursions. Only go to Puerta Plata centre on a city tour as there are no other tourists around so your quite vulnerably out on your own plus theres nothing much to see anyway.

We highly recommend this hotel but if you change money at reception you must be so careful with getting given the right amount of money. My boyfriend got shortchanged 1000 pesos but when we went back for it they said the tills tally up ok and so thay must of given it to him. Sounds a bit suspicious to me but we'll never know if it was just an honest mistake or not. In the end our rep sorted it and got our money back only for us, on paying a final checking out bill in pounds, to be shortchanged again by them giving us £2.50 worth of pesos instead of £12.50. Again it could be an honest mistake but just be careful and make sure you know what you should be getting. Thankfully we caught the 2nd mistake at the time so it was easily sorted.

Anyway, wonderful hotel, food, convenient location, would recommend to anyone.

I hope this review has helped and have a good holiday wherever you choose!!!!
