This was out first time in the Dominican Republic and it was a lot of fun. There were many activities planned for the day and the shows were absolutely fantastic. The staff were so nice and they always had smiles on their faces. (Danawry Soto/ Danny Boy) The food was amazing and the service was excellent as well. I would most definitely recommend this hotel for families, couples and even friends. It was truly an amazing week. They even had day trips where you could go snorkeling, horseback riding, zip lining and so much more! This resort also has an amazing view of a mountain. It was great to escape the snow in Canada for a week to the nice hot sunny pool side of Be Live Grand Marien hotel in Puerto Plata Dominican Republic.

Room Tip: Pick a room where you feel is best for you. If you don't like walking up and down stairs then c...

Dear God. Where does one even start.

I'm sure over the years I've traveled to worse places. But right now none of them come to mind. The management (other staff was mostly pleasant) were largely unhelpful (and when they believe you don't speak Spanish talk badly of you or are outright dishonest. I perhaps don't look like a Spanish speaker- but I am.) , Several rooms (yes I had to change) had leaks or stained bedcovers so this resort is run down a bit. If the rooms have been redone in the last five years, it's the best kept secret around.

The food was probably some of the worst I have ever eaten. I mean bad, I had better meals when eating food out of a package in the army. Not one meal at any of the restaurants was worthy of a complement. The drinks had a funky taste and the wine was also terrible. Good if you want to diet. Terrible for an "all inclusive" vacation.

Security was competent and that is important in the DR. But you need to be cautious as there seemed to be some access to the resort/beach,

The pool was nice and probably the best part of the "resort". The beach was OK.

Personally, I would never go back. Ever. If you must go and ignore the bad reviews, you do so at your peril. Make sure you check out the room fully when checking in. Also plan on losing some weight due to the horrendous food.

Overall, nice break from the cold? Sure. But I could get that most places in the Caribbean with better food, accommodations and service. My advice is- stay away.

We flew out of Montreal with Air Transat on March 8 for 1 week. The flights and transfers were all smooth with no long delays or issues.

I've been at several resorts, but have never (with the exception of a Sandals) enjoyed the meat at the buffet. Here, the fish, pork, chicken, and beef were all quite tasty.

I loved the beach and enjoyed several walks down the long stretch of beach. The locals do approach regularly to tempt to you to their market, but are polite and not pushy if you say no.

The pool set up was great, and the entertainment staff really made it a fun atmosphere. Although we were travelling March Break, the line ups for drinks were not at all long, and the bartenders poured generous drinks with a smile.

The a la cartes were great too. Our room had an ocean view and sitting on the balcony was lovely.

I found all the staff to provide great service and would happily return to this resort.

We fled the cold and snow in Mississauga and found a slice of paradise in Puerto Plata. We stayed from March 9-16 during March break so the resort was full. We flew with Sunwing and on the return trip they were 4 hours late, this was better than the six hours Sunwing was late when we flew from Orlando in November, but we will have to seriously consider this before using them again.

The resort is located only about 20 min from the airport, the transfer and check in were fast and problem free. The resort is fairly small, we liked the feel and the convenience of everything being so close. We had a standard room in Block 1 behind the large theatre. The furnishings need updating, but the room was kept spotlessly clean and we always had hot water, that is mostly what we need as we spend limited time there. The theatre noise was not a problem once our door was closed.

We loved the pool, we got up at 7 am everyday to reserve chairs as there is limited shade. The animation staff were great, there are pool, ping pong and foozball tables at the pool. I strongly suggest you bring or buy a larger cup for the pool bar as the lines can get long. The buffet restaurant was good, particularly the roast meat and the salads. There was enough variety that we never ate the same thing twice unless we wanted to. If you have kids who won't eat anything but pizza and burgers I suggest you take them to the Snack bar at the beach at 5 as these are not available at dinner.

The beach was lovely and pristine, there is a watersports facility, quite a few kitesurfers. Market with local crafts is about a 10 min walk to the right. We did not try the disco, casino or spa.

Overall a lovely resort in a great location. Not 5 star luxury but a nice intimate feeling. I would recommend it to families with children of any age.

This was our first time travelling to an all inclusive resort with our children (3.5 and 1.5). They had a blast! Sophie and Veronika at the kids club were outstanding! So full of energy, welcoming and made it very fun for the kids! The mini disco was a blast at night!

Our room had a beautiful view of the ocean. The room was dated but very clean and had an amazing view. The mattress was VERY HARD but we eventually got used to it and couldn't give up the view we had to get a different room! The A/C works great!

The food was delicious and my kids ate the most they've ever eaten there. Lots of delicious, healthy and comfort food! The brazilian a la carte was delicious and very unique! The people are all very nice! The drinks delicious! It is what you make it, lots of programs and activities going on if you choose to do that or just relax at the pool or beach. We were there during March Break and it was full but not crowded in any way.

I was very nervous about travelling here with young children but had an amazing time! We felt welcomed, safe and accomodated. The staff were wonderful, positive and fun. Many speaking English which was helpful! If you are nervous about going on a trip with your family, rest assured this place is great! It's big enough to keep you busy but not so big that you don't feel safe!

Room Tip: The premium rooms are beautiful, new, modern and very nice! We stayed in an older building it was da...

We booked The Be Live Grand Marien Resort through RedTag.ca at the very last moment and flew out of Montreal on March 8th and returned on March 15th.

Airport Transport and Taxes: We flew with Transat Holidays, our third time flying with Transat. On this trip airport taxes were a part of our package both on arrival and departure. Bus transportation to and from the airport was also included and well organized. Tax rates are $10 on arrival and $20 on departure per person.

Rooms: We booked a Superior Deluxe Room, which means that our room was located in one of the three newer blocks (9,8,6) built in 2008. We stayed in block 8, which is central to the beach, pool and restaurants and is located on the north border of the property. All of the buildings have three floors, with stair access only. The newer buildings are somewhat more elegant with marble floors, and a central atrium.

The Superior Deluxe Rooms are air conditioned, spacious, well appointed, with hair dryers, assorted toiletries, small ironing board and iron as well as a fridge stocked with water, soft drinks and light beer. Also provided is a coffee maker, with an assortment of coffee and tea.

The mattress on our bed was firm but comfortable, there were enough pillows. The pillows were a little small for a king size bed, but did not effect our sleep.

We were quite happy with our room in building 8 but I did ask about ocean view upgrades, which the hotel encourages. We arrived on a Sat and were told that we could have ocean view on Monday if we wanted for an extra $20 per night.

Service: The staff in general is well trained, most often smiling and most seem to enjoy the work they do. We came to know several of the staff personally. Each of these people was lovely, hard working and offered us exceptional service. In particular we would like to mention, Yaniris Amaro (photo) who looked after our room daily. She is energetic, upbeat and always pleased to be of assistance. In the buffet dining room, Vicenta (photo) is also exceptional, smiling, helpful with a wonderful sense of humour and particularly supportive in assisting us with our Spanish. Both women are incredible assets to the resort and wonderful ambassadors for the Dominican.

Beach: The beach is public which provides the opportunity to meet a few people from the area and vendors if you wish. The vendors are friendly and not pushy. We were advised by the Transat Rep and by others to stay on the beach in front of the hotel. Walking down in front of the Iberostar (next hotel to the east) was also OK but going further afield was actively discouraged. This was a disappointment as we usually wander off the beaten path to try and experience the people and the place but clearly this was not advisable.* (see security note below)

The sand is a golden brown and the water is green blue. We experienced light breezes most of the week so most days the water had gentle waves with a sand shelf near the beach and deeper water beyond. There is a buoy line about 100 feet out. Water temperature was lovely and warm and refreshing on hot days of 30 C or more. Chairs: There are enough chairs to accommodate everyone, although about 20-25% are in a state of disrepair. The sand is comfortable to lie on when chairs are not available. True of so many resorts, many guests have not learned the art of sharing. They go to the pool or beach at 6am to get a chair and often these chairs would sit for hours unused with towels and other items as markers. They could easily be used by others as the chaired turned over with regularity, it is unnecessary and means that the number of chairs required to meet demand are much greater than is really needed, this is silly and selfish.

Pool: The pool is beautiful, quite large with three separate access points, each with a zero entry, ideal for young children. The temperature is warm yet refreshing with a central waterfall. There are lots a daily activities including but not limited to: aqua fit, basketball and water polo. There was Children’s Club down by the beach as well with a small pool and fenced play area.

Towels: At registration, you are given a plastic card to exchange for a towel. The towel area is centrally located near the pool. At the end of the day, you hand in your towel and are given back a card. The next morning you receive fresh laundered towels. If you lose your ticket or towel there is a $20 fee associated with the loss.

Food: The buffet was superb. providing an incredible selection at each meal. The baked breads were heavenly – light and fresh. Hot entrees always include fish/seafood, pork, chicken and beef. The salad bar offered five or six prepared salads as well as individual items to make your own salad. There are fresh fruits, smoothies and juices in abundance. There is also a grill, which offered daily hot specials. There are platters of cheeses and cold meats and a sandwich press. Beverages offered included coffee (many varieties), tea, milk, juice, white and red wine, as well as beer and Mamajuana. Mamajuana is a alcoholic beverage steeped in the history and traditions of the Island. Is offered occasionally at dinner in the buffet and more frequently in the Brazilian or Gourmet restaurants. If it is not offered, ask, quite tasty and pleasantly unusual.

There was one type of beer-Presidente, which was uninteresting but fine. There was both red and white house wines, Both drinkable, the red was better than the white in my opinion.

A La Cartes: There are three a la carte restaurants: Brazilian, Mexican and Gourmet. Each one is good and provides a change from the buffet however we enjoyed the diversity of the buffet over the a la carte. These restaurants did offer the opportunity to try some different wine at a $$, otherwise you can stick with the house offerings. The restaurants are booked in the front foyer at the reservation desk on the opposite side of the building from the front desk. It would seem that you are allowed one visit to each during your stay.

Spa: We relaxing e enjoyed a 55-minute message on our second day. The staff were all quite friendly and courteous. The quality of the message was excellent.

Property: The grounds are well manicured and immaculate. There is staff out constantly pruning, trimming palm trees, pressure spraying walkways, painting and keeping the resort looking great. Flowering plants are abundant and are used by the room cleaning staff to add a nice touch to the rooms on a daily basis. The walkways are in very good condition and provide great access to various parts of the resort and a circle route for strolling.

Shopping: There is a limited amount (4 shops) on site, providing tourist mementos, bathing suits, hats, jewelry and some Dominican and Haitian art. There is a market further down the beach as well which we did not go to. A few times a week, local vendors are brought into the hotel, they offer more art, jewelry, carvings and assorted other items. Most will haggle on price, for example in one of the shops a piece of local art approx. 36” x 24” was $100 and with very little discussion became $80. For the same art the local vendors started at $65 and finished at $50, this with only a limited amount of effort.

Guests: This resort caters to people of all ages. It also accommodates a great number of Canadians, primarily from Ontario and Quebec. There is a mix of guests from Europe and some local families particularly on the weekend.

Security: Ever present, if you are concerned about safety this may come as a comfort, if safety is not something that is an issue it may feel a little over the top. There are foot patrols around the perimeter, the beach and by the pool. They do try to be somewhat inconspicuous but they are there, something that we have never experienced before.

Room Tip: Want a Room near the beach? request block 9,4,3,2,1, Ocean front rooms are #25 thru #30 on each floo...
