“Fantastic Holiday!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2011

I have just returned from the Bachata with my boyfriend after 2 fantastic weeks and can only say ignore the poor reviews - i went to Cuba 2 years ago and this was miles better!

The hotel is great a fantastic location as it is a private resort so no pestering on the beach - was told the beach in Playa Dorada was a nightmare for this. The staff can not do enough for you and ok the rooms are a little dated but they are cleaned every day with clean towels and bedding - and who wants to stay in your room anyway?!

The food is really good with lots of choice recommend the buffet restaurant near the pool bar for lunch - more choice. The two theme restaurants are really good and u can go as many times as you want they dont check!

The pool does get quite lively and my boyfriend and i spent more time on the beach lots of shady areas for when its really hot! I dont know why people say the beach is poor its lovely and peaceful and if u go towards the Mambo its bigger.

Yes the invasion of the locals is not the best but we seemed to avoid the worst of it as we booked trips for the friday and saturday and also booked the seperate restaurants so avoided the hoardes at the buffet restaurant!

The trips are expensive but we loved them especially Paradise Island, Rafting, Ocean World and our surprise fav the horse riding!! DO NOT do deep sea fishing Its a con and nobody catches - my boyfriend was in a minority that did but as a keen fisherman he definately didnt get his monies worth!

So would i recommend this hotel - definately! At the end of the day its what u make of your holiday and we certainly had an amazing time:)

Im going to start with good things, rep vicki very knowledgable and friendly. Rooms nice and cleaned daily. front desk any problems they were straight on the case and phoned on an evening to make sure problems were resolved. entainterment team good bunch very freindly and funny, they work very hard and try very hard i think lack of facilities and equipment for them is a shame.
Unfortunatly there were some bad points aswell..... food was disgraceful, bird sit on the bread baskets and eat the bread flies are all over the fresh fruit and salad no covers on them what so ever. pool was dirty a grime/ grease covered the sides and complained about it. nothing done. weeknds were chaos when the locals descend on the riu complex, take over.... personel belonging are not safe around the pool area they seem to think everything is comunal and just take it. breakfast lunch and dinner were manic they are extremerly rude and arrogant have no self control. the run around and knock you all over the place there not bothered if you are carrying your dinner or anything. they get treat better than you do and round the bars the think the own the place you will struggle to get a drink. they very loud and noisey also quite intimadating at times. run up and down the corridors screaming and shouting at all hours of the night. i was electricuted by a drink machine twice, stuff should be maintained i complained they didnt take me serious and even though it got fixed that day in the time between me getting electricuted and them fixing it many people got electricuted including children, lucky enough it was 110volts and not 230volts. i have to say the majority of the people there were friendly but i went here 3 years ago to the same complex and this time standards were no were near met, hotel has gone down hill.

We have just returned from the Bachata and it was so sad to leave it. The hotel is in a great location and is situated just off a gorgeous beach. It is ideal for kids and families as there is lots of entertainment during the day for them and also a fantastic pool. It's also good for couples who just want a romantic break.

The food was delicious in the main restaurant with so much choice but I would also recommend the specialty restaurants, in particular the Italian.

The staff were very friendly, especially Fred who was a great manager and a great guy!

The only thing that let it down slightly was the entertainment at night. There wasn't enough variety and some of the shows were a bit repetitive. The Karaoke and the shows that get the audience involved were a great laugh! The Michael Jackson one is a must see!

The rooms were cleaned everyday to a very high standard as well as the areas throughout the hotel.

Overall, we had a fantastic holiday and this was down to the hotel, the weather , the location, the food and the people. Many Thanks Riu!

I have read some of the reviews for this hotel. Some are good and some are bad.

Your holiday is what you make of it. We arrived at this hotel because we had been moved from the Mambo as it was closing for refurbishment. It is just up the beach from it and if you want a quiet time, go to their beach area.

You may have a sore/upset stomach but as they cook their food different to that of the British, it will take you a few days to get used to it. Also remember that should you take Malaria tablets these can cause it too.

Our room was also spotless, the towels were changed regularly - if you want them changed every day, put them in the bath and they will know to change them. Leaving the maids a few pesos/dollars would not go a miss. The staff were always friendly - if you were nice to them, they were nice to you.

The grounds were spotless. The pool was cleaned every night. The beach was racked every day. Guarantee there was peebles on the beach, but hey, it is a natural beach not like that in Cancun which is manmade. Always enough beds when we were there - if the pool is busy, go down to the beach. It does get busy at the weekend, which has been mentioned before, but it is only a few days out of your holiday - dont bother them and they wont bother you.

Food - we done the Italian Restaurant and the Steakhouse. Good for a wee change. It can get repetitive, but I could not fault it. I always found something to eat. I went to Cancun two years ago and all this couple wanted were Roasts. Go figure!!! Though would liked to have seen more Dominican style Food. We has a waiter called Ramon, who was brillant. We tended to sit at the same table, and he ended up holding the table for us. Could not fault him.

Always tons to do at the hotel - if that is what you want to do. If you want to relax, don't do them, just chill and read a book. Entertainment staff were always working hard. Cannae fault them either.

We done excursions - Outback Safari (dont expect to see wild animals - it is not that type of safari); Dominican Fiesta night (saw a bit of Puerto Plata); Buggy Adventure (take old clothes for this); Paradise Island (does exactly what it says on the tin, but the road to it was a tad bumpy in parts) and a taxi tour to Puerto Plata (going up the cable car to Isabel Del Torres). These are not connected with the hotel, but your holiday advisor. If you dont want to do anything and stay at the hotel, do that, but it is nice to leave your hotel for a bit.

Mosquitos - yip, advise you to take Insect Repellent.

Fredrick, the manager, stopped to talk to us, and also wished us cheerio when we left. Again, if you acknowledge them they were nice to you. There was an incident when we were there when a young man hurt his foot, and one member of staff went out of their way to go and get some cream for him and advised him what to do. She paid for it out of a tip she had received from another guest. Over the next couple of days she checked up on him. The staff were never intrusive.

Would we go back - in a heartbeat. Your holiday is what you make of it. If you constantly moan about thngs, you should stay at home. Dont worry about the locals at the weekend. You are warned about this by your holiday advisor. Drink enough fluids (and I am not talking about alcohol) in order to not dehydrate. For stuff you dont want to take back, it is always received gratefully - unused or nearly done suncream, clothes (dirty or not they accept them) - these are given to locals whether at an orphanage or locals.

Our rep was Vicky as Martin had been moved to Punta Cana - she went out of her way when another holiday maker took seriously ill and visited her in hospital. Again, this is not through the hotel but your holiday company.

You are there for roughly two weeks out of 52 of the year. Your holiday is what you make of it and well - we enjoyed it.

Room Tip: Speak to your rep before you leave with your requirements for the room, e.g. upper floor etc.

Just arrived back for Riu Bachata, hotel is kept very clean and tidy the grounds are immaculate. The pool area infront of pool bar does get rather busy and loud but if you want quieter there is another pool behind it or you can use the mambo or merengie. The beach is not the best infron of the bachata full of scattered paml trees not much actuall beach area but we walked down to the mambo end which was lovely, in a sweeping bay better for building sandcastles for my 3 year old and swimming as sea rough down the bachata end. There is plenty to eat and drink and very hot.

Would recommend booking speciality restaurants for the friday sat nghts as this hotel does get rather busy and loud when the locals come at the weekend.

Overal had fab time.
We enjoyed this holiday and the service was great. well done Fred!!!

Room Tip: 316 was lovely room with sea view any in this block are good.

Great Holiday! Great Hotel!

Me and my girlfriend stayed in the bachata in early July 2011 (upgrade from Mambo due to the hotel being closed) On arrival the hotel looked very clean and friendly, after checking in (which took a whole 2 minutes) we was greeted with a very clean (slight dated room but after a couple days it was fine and fitted in was it was very Caribbean theme) The food was extremely nice (really don’t know where the negative reviews are biased from) which several nights a week are “theme” night where they have anything to local food to Mexicans to Chinese. There are 2 a la carte restaurants (a steak house and the Italian – very nice!) which we ate twice in as both experience was very nice. Although the lunch menu gets a bit repetitive, we went on a couple of excursions to break it up a bit. The Staff are extremely helpful and the barman are awesome with many of them have their “special drinks” which fantastic incl. the worlds famous Diaz green special and Edwin’s Special! (Diaz’s Etan Special was very nice too – a banana milkshake with mint and rum I think) We heard about Drinky Drinky man as well (a man which drives round on his bike around the pool offering drinks) but we only seen him on our last day (just guessed he was on holiday while we was there or something)

Although a lot of people of sad to see the mambo being closed, we took the chance to see what it was like and discovered the pool and the bar was still open with about 10 people in the complex and went their during the weekend (locals come out to play – explain later) to relax and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet – and at one point we had the top “circle” pool all to our self’s just floating on our lidos.

Negatives…

The dreaded Locals – We all know where in their country and we went their reading a few reviews about them but as we landed on the Friday, with the locals was checking in for the weekend. The locals was unbelievable rude, pushing in front of me the food queue without noticing me, bumping into us on the paths without saying sorry, nicking our lidos while we was sunbathing and the manager said that during the weekend there is a no tops policy in the pool due to the locals coming straight in from the streets and washing them self’s in the pool.

The Entertainment…

The entertainment team are great! All top people which does all they can to make sure you have a great holiday! But the entertainment at night was below par, it was mostly poor shows put on by the same entertainment staff while the hotel so splash out on some professional performers! The daily “whats on” guide was the same everyday – which isn’t a problem for me but I could imagine if you spend I lot of the time in the pool for it to be very repeatitive.

Some small point of in the second week the fly’s did be began to “bug” me if you mind the pun – hundreds on the round the tables while you are eating but if you sit outside (over looking the beach) it’s much more peaceful!

Excursions

If you’re planning any excursions this might just be the tip of the holiday for you! A few people recommend a guy at Playa Dorada plaza called James (Google Tours by James if you want his website) he is fully insured, same trips but half the price as Thomson. Dune buggy with Thomson is about $90 while with James is $55 and Paradise Island is $95 with Thomson and $50 with James! So when you booking for 2+ people the difference is amazing! I went on 6 Excursions (incl horse riding, Water Rafting, City tour + Cable car and Jeep safari) didn’t have one problem and saved loads!! You can book by phone but I would recommend traveling down in a taxi (cost about $40 return but they are 8 seats so could always find people to travel down with you and split the cost but when you’re saving about $40 per person on each excursion so it worth a trip plus his office is next to a great British bar which shows live sports!) and book them in person. He has a lot of videos for each tour if you want to see what it’s like before you book. If you go to Paradise Island make sure you take a camera! The reef is jaw-dropping and you want to take a million photos and disposable cameras are $20 for 26 pictures on the island! On his website it states on most excursions cost an extra $5 per person for booking from the Riu hotels but we only got charged for one of them don’t be worried.

On the whole Great hotel and Great Holiday! I would recommend the hotel in a flash and I would go back any in a few years probably with children

Ive just returned from the riu bachata, slightly disappointed in more than one way...
Firstly we was orginally staying at the riu mambo and 3 weeks before we was going we was informed that the mambo was closing due to reduced numbers and wed been upgraded to the bachata.... win win situation so you would think..but on arriving at the bachata i knew instantly this wasnt the "paradise" id been been dreaming off..
THE BAD POINTS....... Buffet - same food more or less everyday i ended up with pizza, chips, salad for the majority of stay, they seem to have a major problem with flys in the restaurant and they are everywhere, at first you had citronella candles lit on your table but that was only one night, had to put napkin over your drinks or they would be in your drink. me and my partner suffered very bad stomachs while we was there and we didnt go in the pool so know it wasnt from there.....
Night time entertainment-- while the entertainment team are fantastic you couldnt fault any of them it was such a shame they was expected to do the night entertainment aswell as the day, youd think a huge hotel chain like riu would employ proffesional acts for night time entertainment. the one night we saw something worth watching was the micheal jackson show- it was brilliant!
Weekends- over run with locals and people from purteo rico- have no manners and think nothing of sitting in front of you at night when your trying to watch the shows.
Cariba caribe diving- a expensive waste of time.... while i dont dive my partner is a experienced diver, he booked 6 dives best part of $292 dollars. out of the 6 dives he did 5 dives in excatly the same pace, and just one day at "the wall" on there websites they advertise lots of different places to dive, which when you go to book they do there upmost to discourage you from it and say "we will see how many people will book on" and of course they never do, cos obviously they are discouraging people.
Trips- dont do waste your money on outback safari... waste of money, more like a school trip then a safari.
Beach at the bachata.... not a nice beach and need beach shoes because of the stones, not what youd expecct.
GOOD POINTS...
All the staff at the riu bachata was lovely, very friendly and reception desk went out of there way to help.
Renova spa- lovely right on the beach, slightly expensive but was worth the treat.
Ocean world- expensive, but one of the best days of my life, we did the royal swim which was just amazing.
Paradise island..... beautiful and it really is paradise, worth a trip.

whist the mambo was closed the pool and pool bar was open, we spent alot of time around that pool, lovely and little more shaded, we had a look round the mambo and to me i feel we was down graded to the riu bachata, the rooms was over looking the beach, the beach area was lovely sand and good snorkelling. i know i cant really say i would of enjoyed my holiday more if wed of been staying at the mambo, but it certainly goes along way that it was our first choice tho and i feel slightly hard done by..
i would definately go back to the dominician again, lovely island but maybe next time purteo cana..
