“Good Food and breathtaking scenery”
Reviewed 8 January 2013

Strong points of the hotel: tasty food with themed evening buffets: china night-great sushi; Mexico night-good tacos. Incredible scenery especially from the tower at the tip of the small peninsula: the western side has a calm bay with beautiful hills and mountains stretching out into the ocean, north you have sizable waves crashing on the rocks below, east a long beach with intriguing cliffs rising from the ground at the end and south the largest mountain to be seen. Only downfall to me was the beach: narrow and quickly getting deep. I strongly suggest a long walk along the peninsula path, Cuba libre dos ron and cigar at hand.

We were a group of friends and family who travelled to this place for New Year 2012. We had to pay a steep premium for 7 nights which included the New Year celebration. I have been to 2 previous Caribbean locations and am very happy with the experience. I read the positive and negative reviews for the resort but this was the only resort available for the price we were ready to pay which was still close to twice for what we paid for last year early December. So we decided to risk it and spend the New Year together for the extra cost. How bad can an all inclusive be when you are spending time with friends and family.

The resort is a combination of 3 resorts who share the beach, amenities and anyone can eat lunch at any other resorts buffet. The dinner is restricted to each individual resort. You can drink anywhere except the disco where even water is $2. The best buffet is at the Bachata with a lot of selections available. The best drinks are at the Merengue bar.

Here are some of my observations. Hopefully it would be useful to future travelers. Mind you this review is by someone who has been to deluxe plus resorts for half the price. For a first timer or someone who has not experienced deluxe treatment things may appear differently.

The Good
People were friendly and courteous. The RIU manager would personally talk to guest to make sure everything was fine. Lot of staff on site which was making sure the place is sparkling clean. Even during rains they kept cleaning the place so the guest would not get a wet and slippery floor.
Snorkeling was great - not many people knew that there was such a great snorkeling right on the beach. But beware the sea urchins - they were everywhere. And it would cost you $100 to get treated on site and they do not accept major insurance carriers from US.
We had a family room which was very spacious. It came with a balcony which unfortunately faced some construction and had stench coming from some waste treatment plant.
Each room came with a fridge which had beer, Pepsi, sparkling water and 2 bottles of water. There was a 4 bottle alcohol dispensing machine which had some local cheap brand called "Royal" with gin, brandy, vodka and some other. The good news was it was always full.
The entertainment team was dedicated and energetic. They did a good job with the day time entertainment. Night time was another story.
The canoe and pedal boat rental was easy and fun though rowing was tough in strong currents.
There was no time share pressure like Punta Cana which was a relief.

The Bad
The beach is not really what you would expect from an all inclusive in Caribbean. Move 10 feet from the sand and you will be hit with rocks so walk with water shoes. The currents are strong and not swimmable at time.
Two restaurants on site and you could book them only once during your stay. So for 7 nights you have to eat 5 nights in the buffet (and also all the breakfast and lunches are buffet) and could potentially have other 2 nights in the Italian or the steakhouse. If you are a couple or small group you can get the reservation even at 9-10 a.m but for bigger group you may want to wake up at 7 a.m to get the reservation. The Italian has a choice of 3-4 entrees with no pasta (yup Italian with no pasta). The food was bad. Steak house was not all that bad - the steak and lamb chops were fine. But do not expect Outback Steakhouse quality. The food is monotonous and after 2-3 days you start missing McDonalds (seriously). They can’t even make burgers and pizza well. The only thing worth eating was the fish and curry chicken but you can’t survive 7 days on it.
No consistency with the beverage delivery people. They are supposed to refill your fridge every 2 days and if you are lucky they would show up and refill. We had to actually chase after them to get bottle of water and Pepsi and beer to the room. One of the people in our group never had any beverage for the whole stay till they complained to the manager last day. Service could definitely use some toning up. It looks the staff was over worked and under paid - so not much enthusiasm.
The entertainment was average. Not many guest wanted to be part of it - absolutely no activity on the beach, everything was on pool side which was so much crowded. Late night activities really was average, a few shows were good like the magic show and some local dances with the attractive dresses. Rest everything was hardly bearable. They spend 1 hour giving prizes to the day participant winner so they spend less time on actual entertainment. The same staff every day except for a few nights when outsiders came in. The same music and the same moves.
No English channels on TV which made life difficult for kids as they were bored. No good kid’s entertainment on site - luckily the internet connection was excellent for $10 per day or $20 for 3 days which made the Netflix subscription completely worth the monthly price. The free internet in lobby was a joke.

The Ugly
The New Year program was a huge disappointment. Watched a Broadway copycat show of Chicago. No guest involvement and no dancing for the New Year. It was boring watching Dominicans doing Broadway show on New Year's eve. Not worth the extra month we paid for New Year.
The drinks were horrible. Very cheap liquor. Period. The drinks were watered down but they would make it stronger on request - no issues. The only issue was the quality - WOW never thought I would be avoiding drinks in an all inclusive. I had to actually do outside the resort and get my own rum.
Chair hunting was an interesting game. Like mentioned in some earlier reviews if you don't claim them at 7 a.m you would get none. The same case with the beach chairs. We had one person assigned everyday to wake up to get chairs.
The staff at the disco stole our umbrella and acted as if they did not understand English. The disco was usually empty with a lot of smoke and loud music.

Overall an average experience and would NOT return.

Room Tip: There was stench near buildings 14 where we were staying. Choose the water facing rooms. The A/C was...

We traveled to the RIU Bachata as a couple and had great relaxing trip. The hotel had many activities throughout the day so there was always something to do. The food was good, lots of options and nightly themes. The grounds were well kept. The staff was great...everyone was very friendly! We went on two excursions the Outback Safari and the Paradise Island..both were amazing...but they were long days. Check in was simple and organized. We spent most of our time at the pool because the beach wasn't great. However, we walked to the other RIU's where the beach was better. Overall it was a great trip and I would visit this RIU again.

This is one of the best holidays I have been on everybody is so friendly and the setting is beautiful .I have read over reviews saying how awful the food was and how everyday the same food was served however, every 3 days there's a themed night e.g-Chinese, Dominican, italian and if you don't like the themed food then there is also other foods available . There was 3 big pools and lots of little pools and jaquooses which are lovely and are cleaned every night and morning so an excellent condition there's also many sunbeds you can lounge on and big umbrellas if you don't want to be exposed to the heat . There are many bars where you can get drinks from including the swim up bar but the best bar is the red bar a couple of minutes away from the pool because the same man that pulls the drinks there always knew the certain drink i love (merengue) and if he saw me walking up my drink would be sitting there for me before i even had a chance to order a really good service. Local people don't pesters you unless you go down the caribbean street but this is optional personally i don't like going there as i find the people annoying and forceful, people also sell a little bit off the beach but are not aloud to come any further as they are watched by a policeman that makes sure of that. We went on the tour and our tour guides name was good

firstly booking in and out was the best ive ever seen got to the hotel on a coach full of families.told them our names and were given an envelope with wrist bands room keys safe keys and stickers for cases put stickers on cases and then went to our room with hand luggage to freshen up cases followed with a porter shortley after.
rooms were all you needed big bed enogh wardrobe space and drawers for two easily ,fridge and drinks dispenser, fridge had beers and mixers and water replaced regularly.
food in the normal restaurant was quite good for an a/i,the al a carte restaurants were italian and steak-house the italian was o/k but wasnt really italian the steak-house was really good.
used the beach more than the pool because of the cooling breeze on the beech it would have been to hot round the pool for me unless id have been under a brolly.the beach was very good because you have got quite a long beach to use because it stretches along to were the mambo used to be
the entertainment team work very hard to keep everyone entertained all day with various games and allin all do a really good job.entertainment on a night is quite good but gets a bit samey after a few days, but that usually happens.might have been better if they hadnt played merangey dance music all the time.
the staff were incredible while we wre there we had a lot of rain for a week and the staff worked harder than normal just to keep the tiled floors safe to walk on,they were constantly mopping them.
all in all we had a really good time and we would go back, but theres always somewhere else to go,but anyone who goes here should enjoy it

Room Tip: any rooms are good but some rooms are near to the sea.

Stayed at the Riu Bachata Nov 22 -Dec7.Tis was my second time at Bachata and found it just as good as the first time yeswe had quite a lot of rain but was still very hot and very enjoyable.if your expecting 5* steak and caviar then this is not for you.I read reports of people complaining about the food, why !!! we found the food very good,so much to choose from.evening meal - 2 diff types of fish and meat, also a chef carving a diff meat every night- the suckling pig melts in your mouth.A chef making fresh curry/pasta,you pick your own ingredients.veg, salad and lots more.Breakfast - apart from the normal cooked stuff and chef makin you fresh omlettes of your choice, theres many diff cereals and yogurts, fresh friut, cold meats n cheeses, cakes and fresh made smoothies,so whats to complain about !!!. - The drinks were good,we were given Smirnoff vodka,if you want it just ask.loved the cocktails, these are made as slushies so very refreshing.ROOMS - these are quite spacious,my bed and pillows were so comfy, better than at home.you also get a mini bar -vodka,gin etc, also fridge with beers pepsi andwater,a couple of dollars left in the fridge got us extra beers and water.we left our maid a tip every couple of days, she used to make us some lovely swans etc from the towels.was on the balcony one morn and the gardener asked would I like him to cut me down a fresh coconut ! - the pool is lovely, always plenty of sunbeds, and yes the locals do book in at weekends but are no trouble at all.if you want a bit of peace and relaxation,go to the beach, not lovely white sand no,but shaded by palm trees, very relaxing. The animation team work very hard, okay the shows are not first class but are enjoyable.my only negative is the pushy people in shops, but then a simple no thanks is usually good enough. The staff at Bachata cant do enough for you,all so helpfull.if you havnt got what you want, just ask.Would I return for a 3rd time.YES I WOULD.

Room Tip: I asked for ground floor, and got what I asked for.

We got such a great deal here, we couldn't pass on it for December 1st for 4 nights.
Our check-in was fast and easy booked through GOGO. The location is spectacular, we thought the beach was great on the beautiful Bay. It is not the bright white sand beaches at Punta Cana, but still very nice with the mountains in the background, we loved it. Be prepared to see some topless sunbathers..We were fortunate enough to have good weather most of the time.
The Resort itself is very lush and tropical, lovely landscape and architecture. We especially enjoyed going up to the tholos at night and watching the stars, it is magical!

The rooms were nice, however, my one complaint was the very HARD bed and the bed sheets did not fit the bed at all. Not great for an all-inclusive even though this is only a 3 star resort.
I hope that can be fixed in the future.
The Buffets were excellent and always fresh and hot. The desserts were wonderful, and I was always curious to see what would be created! The servers were very pleasant. We did try to get reservations at the other restaurants but could not, but I dont feel we missed out at all.
We ventured out to the Fort at Puerta Plata and that was very cool, the oldest fort in the Ameicas and very well preserved.
Our only recommendation is to NOT rent a car and drive if you can avoid it, let the Dominicans do
the driving. We were pulled over and told we ran a red light in Santiago on our way from Santo Domingo. He told us finally that we had to pay him $100.00 if we wanted to keep going.
Oh well, we paid it and got out of there. Lesson learned. It was an adventure in the DR that we will always remember!
