“Terrible vacation”
Reviewed 26 June 2014

I went with my friends to Puerto Plata, POP RIU Bachata Hotel in Dominician Republic last week. I never have this terrible vacation. The hotel location is one of the best in there. I have few friends are vegetarian, we had two fine dinners for the difference rest. Both of the chef didn't know how to made the foods for my friends, they are boiled the one or two kind of foods until yellow colour (no fresh at all), they just took off the main course actually, no matter you told them what kind of the food they need, it seems they didn't catch what you mean. Everyday need to line up at the front of main restaurant for get a seat at the dining room at 7 am, that means you can get a relax if need to book the table. I order the Shampoo at reception area or cleaners, but they gave me the bath gel every time, I don't think the cleaners understand what I said. Tower from the swimming pool never enough to travellers everyday.

I went to the different destination at D.C., but I never have this terrible experience, you are unbelieveable how they are come to 5 stars hotel.

I won't be in there any more, I expense my time and money.

Room Tip: Pls read the review before you go. This is very important to plan your trip, even the location is go...

We stayed at the Riu Bachata from the 9th June to the 11th June for 1 week. All I would say is it is a long way to go just for one week. We arrived at the airport and it was a little chaotic with 2 different forms we had to fill in, but eventually got through ok. The Thompson rep pointed us in the direction of our transfer bus and we was met there by Dinko (sorry I cant remember how to spell i) I have to admit it was very hectic and not very organised and took some time to organise everyone on the coach. I know this is nothing to do with the hotel but wanted to mention it.

We checked in very swiftly and headed to our room, we was in 1523 not far from the main bar and pool. The room I thought was nice and clean and cool, and was a good standard and I loved the mini bar and optics it was a nice extra. We had our bags delivered in a reasonable amount of time and our holiday began. We had a couple of problems in the room, one of the draw handles just fell off and our air conditioning leaked quite bad on the first night. We rang the reception and i am guessing they sorted it as it never happened again.

We spent a lot of time around the pool during the day which is kept spotless and the staff are always cleaning it to make sure it stays clean. We did get up early a couple of mornings to reserve a sunbed but its not always necessary and never had a problem getting one. We would spend the morning sunbathing then after lunch head to the pool bar. They was loads of reviews about it been over crowded and the Canadians been very loud this is not the case, we did find a big group of americans who had come to a wedding did hang around the bar and were quite noisy and roudy but they were just enjoying there holiday and it was no big drama and nine times out of ten they would make the effort to say hello. Its round the pool area we met some lovely people its a great way to start talking to others, so if you are reading this Tammie and Lee and Julie & Tommy you made our holiday more fun. :)

We did book a out back safari but never ended up going partly because the bus was full and very noisy and we had had a long day the day before (too many drinks at the pool bar) so i couldn't comment on any of the trips.

The food I found great, i am one very picky eater and sometimes struggle with food and variety but i always found something to eat, the choice was fantastic. We ate in the steak house for the last night on our holiday and wished we had booked before. It was lovely and i found the food exceptional, we had told the rep it was our first wedding anniversary and he had arranged for a cake to be made which was a nice added extra.

We had a lovely week here with no dramas apart from one which i will mention, on several reviews on here people reported personal belongings going missing from rooms etc so we made a big effort to put everything in the safe. One day returning to the room i went to get my phone out of the safe and found it not to be there. We pulled everything out on more that one occasion and it wasn't there, we had the room upside down looking for it in case we hadn't put it in there. We felt the need to report this to the Thompson rep straight away. I told the Italian rep (sorry i cant remember her name) what i thought had happened and she advised it was impossible as there is only one key to each safe. I insisted it had been stolen and she asked if she and a porter could come to the room to check the safe. She went in checked it and there it was in a blank spot (how embarrassing) i am writing this to warn anyone else making this error!!

Overall our holiday here was great and i think we may come back one day! i think the staff here do a great job and i feel the need to mention DRINKY DRINKY man his brandy and cokes hit the spot, Tulle at the pool bar for all his hard work and teaching us the manwana shot and Wilkinson he was lovely too.

A quick tip for you if you want a extra water or coke leaving in your mini bar leave a little note and a couple of dollars and your request will be fulfilled!! and if you get time go jet skiing its great! If you are planning on coming here ignore the bad reviews!!!

2nd time to a Riu resort (visited Veradero, Cuba 2 yrs ago) but, first time to DR. Security at POP airport very straight forward, airport porters took you right out to transfer bus (they'll expect a tip), Sunwing rep was outside with transfer Bus. Transfer was about 30-40 minutes. We're greeted with a cold drink in the lobby, Check-in was fast, & our rooms were basic but, clean, comfy, & ready for us despite how early we were. Our rooms were on the main floor of #9 close to the Caramba bar. Thanks to Antonio at the Caramba for keeping us hydrated! The layout of the resort was easy to find your way around. The beach was beautiful! We enjoyed the weather. There always seemed to be a breeze & humidity wasn't ever very high. It rained twice during our 2 week stay but didn't last very long. The staff at the resort were helpful & friendly without being too overly familiar. Could do without all the high fives from the supervisor in buffet. There is access to the merengue & we used the merengue village pool at the far end of the merengue area. Its quieter if you want to get away from some of excitement at the pool & snack bar. My sister & I only started traveling abroad the last 3 years but, puerto plata is our favorite destination so far. We took her 2 teenage kids with us this time & they enjoyed the resort & the excursions. As females traveling alone we felt safe & plan to return next year.

We stayed in the Riu Bachata in September 2013. The resort is well presented. We went all inclusive and the food was very good. The accommodation was also clean and well presented.
Only two minor issues. If it is a rainy day, there is no point watching TV in your room unless you speak Spanish. Also the holiday companies push the free drinks in the all inclusive deals. This is a con as the spirits ion the resort are cheap local rubbish and the beer is awful. Tasted like alcohol free. Two cans of Stella are allocated to each room each day.
So if you want to relax in the sun and you are not worried about a drink it is a great place to go.

Hotel claims 5 star, Thomsons say 4-1/2 star, but really should be 3-1/2 star, although aspects of the holiday was exellant. The good= excellant gardens beautifully kept, very clean rooms and very relaxing atmosphere. The bad= Food not as good a quality as other Riu hotels. Food is cooked and cling filmed well before it is required, causing the food to dry out. Meats are overcooked and have a lot of grissle. Went to the Steak house ( Speciality Resuraunt) steak was wafer thin so chef was not able to cook medium rare, so it came out as it was cooked. The Ugly = 70 black Amercians came for a wedding, their behaviour was totally unacceptable, swearing, shouting, fighting, (At one point) and smoking in the swimming pool. Police where called to sort them out and with the support of the hotel management, they managed to restore order.
Fair play to the hotel manager he kept a high visual presence at all times of the day and spoke to all guests. If you want a relaxing holiday and not too bothered about basic food this is as good as other Riu's.One word of note- they are building a jetty for cruise ships at the rear of the hotel. ( Sea View) so dregging the channel and banging stakes in for the foundations 24/7, but will be completed Christmas.

Room Tip: Do not book an Ocean view if you sleep lightly, as the work in the channel will keep you awake.

Just back from 2 weeks at this great hotel. The room was large nice views and a good bathroom. Drinks replenished every two days though water always available at reception and the 4 optics in the room was an unexpected touch.
The staff are very pleasant and were not tip hunting as some people have said, drinks were excellent and the grounds pools beach etc are all 5 star.

The only area that let the hotel down was the entertainment and the compare who just liked the sound of his own voice. Every night they gave out certificates to who ever had won table tennis etc which was of no interest. The shows were amateurish and the long winded act of the man laying on a bed of nails and eating light bulbs just seemed not right with children in the audience.

They have a duet who play the organ and sing, only she don't sing it is totally out of tune and at times they don't seem to know the English words to songs. They even killed a beetles song making it unrecognisable.
