I recently spent two weeks here on a wonderful family holiday. Our group of ten adults and three children all had rooms next to each other in block 300 on the ground floor which was quiet. The rooms were nice, clean and spacious. There was air con and a ceiling fan, at night we just had the ceiling fan on which kept us cool. The mini bar in the room gets restocked every other day but you can ask for water from reception any time. The hotel grounds and gardens were tidy and well looked after. The pool area is great. Two large pools next to each other, one with a swim up bar. Beach is amazing. There are lots of odd shaped trees growing out of the sand which give plenty of shade. The water temperature of the pool and sea was lovely, not too cold that you freeze or too warm that it feels like you are in a bath. Plenty of sunbeds at the pool and beach. Three Riu hotels share the beach (two of the three were open when we were there) and it wasn't crowded. You can take a nice stroll along the beach or on the path that joins them all. There's a nice little beach bar at the other end of the beach which you can still get an all inclusive drink from even though its the other Riu hotel. You must take a walk up to the little pavilion for a great view of the beach. The food is good with lots of choice, but as with any all inclusive it is repetitive. To overcome this just eat different things and then its not the same every time. The 'a la carte' restaurants were not as good as you would expect but are still worth a visit, especially the Italian as it is the only air conditioned dining area. While we were staying we celebrated a birthday and at dinner we had balloons on the table, and the staff brought out a cake and sang Happy Birthday which was lovely. The evening entertainment was okay. Some nights were better than others. There was a really good Michael Jackson night, and the karaoke night was fun. All members of staff from the entertainment staff to the cleaners and the restaurant and bar staff were lovely and could not help you enough. We all agreed we loved this place and would not hesitate to come back here again on holiday.

We came back last week from a 7 day stay at Riu Bachata.
Flight: SUNWING, which as usual was late departing (supposed to leave Toronto at 7:15, left at 11:15) and just before we left we were informed that it would not be a direct flight. (Stop at Montego bay) Return flight was only slightly late.
Hotel: Very nice lobby, everything clean and neat. Room assignments were ready and everything was problem free.
Rooms: Nice rooms with tiled floors, 2 queen size beds pushed together to make a large bed. Nice bathroom, but tub water would drain very slowly and hand held shower head would shoot water up to the ceiling. Called reception and next day they sent a repairman to plunge the tub and replace shower head. If you open the window or sliding door to the little veranda, the air conditioner shuts off. When the maids clean the room, they open the sliding door and our air would not come back on. I had to call for service every day, they would send a technician who would restart it and next day the same thing would happen. Even talking to the hotel manager, who allegedly sent his chief of maintenance did not fix the problem. So I would call every day after lunch to get it restarted.
Mini bar with 1 large bottle of water, 2 soda bottles, 2 tonic water bottles and 2 cans of El President beer. Above the mini bar is a glass fronted cabinet with 4 upside down self serve bottles of liquor (Rum, Gin, Brandy & Vodka) Mini Bar is replenished every other day.
Beach: Very large crescent shaped beach with lots of trees to provide shade. Lots of sea grass floats on water surface and is deposited on beach overnight. Beach sand is kind of rough and when you go into the water there is a lot of medium sized pieces of coral and rocks. Bring water shoes otherwise your feet will hurt. Do not go into the darker shaded parts of water, lots of bigger rocks and seaweed. All week they had the red flag up, and no lifeguards on duty. Lots of loungers on the beach.
There is also a smaller beach ( finer sand and less waves) to the left of the hotel just past where there is some kind of monument on a promontory (this is where they are building the cruise port) Close to the smaller beach is a small shopping area and according to the sign you can watch exotic animals (Parakeets) There is also a small pharmacy that displays a large sign advertising that they sell Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
Food: Breakfast was very good, pancakes, eggs, cold cuts, salads, fresh fruit, freshly made fruit juices, yogurt, ham, bacon and their versions of sausage ( fried hot dogs)
Lunch and dinner were somewhat mediocre, they always had fish, pork, chicken and very tough beef, salads, pasta dishes etc, but I think they hired their chef directly from the Dominican army, and he does not want to change his recipes.
They have special nights for different countries, they had a Mexican night and a Chinese night. All I can tell you is you can get better flavors if you heat up a TV dinner. The Chinese food was really bad.
DO NOT leave your food unattended specially if you are eating at the outside veranda of the dining room. If you do you will find some food missing and little bird footprints all over your plate.
Drinks: If you are a wine drinker, do not come to the Bachata. I tried the Red wine and it tasted like bad Kool Aid, the rose wine was the same. It was kind of funny watching people order wine, and after the first sip, set it aside. After the second day, there did not seem to be any wine drinkers around. The beer is good. The drinks at all the bars were very sweet, if you ordered a rum and coke it tasted like syrup.
Entertainment: The entertainment crew puts on all kinds of little games during the day, we spent most the time at the beach so did not partake on any of them.
Night Entertainment: Three nights with musicals by the Puerto Plata ballet which were good. and 3 with only the entertainment crew that put on silly games.

I would have no problem recommending this resort to anyone, was located directly on the beach, nice swimming pools, good food, clean rooms and facilities, always cleaning, NO BUGS in room or facilities.

The flight was good Dreamliner plane good leg room, hotel, food and staff was all good, we was quite impressed with the cleanliness of the rooms and the hotel generally, maid service daily, the only thing to criticise was the minibar in room, it was filled every second day with water and beer plus coke however it was insufficient for three people

Room Tip: Get ground floor high numbered room as they are nearer restaurants and beach.

We have just come back from a week in this lovely hotel in the Dominican Republic.
The staff were friendly and helpful, working hard to make sure we all had a wonderful holiday experience. The food was plentiful and fresh, the weather was perfect.
Riu should be proud of their staff, Jess the assistant manager was a star, we had a problem with our air con which was sorted out with minimum of fuss.
We ate al a carte a couple of times and enjoyed very much.
We spent our time down on the beach which is more our thing. There was always loads of activities to take part in if you wanted to be more active.
All the public area were kept clean and our room was spotless.
It was my birthday while there and oh boy did they make a fuss. When we got back to our room ( over looking the sea) in the afternoon my husband had arranged for it to be decorated! Beautiful flowers, balloons, even presents and cards from the hotel! Birthday cake at dinner with a round of happy Birthday sung by the staff! A lovely lovely surprise..
Overall an amazing holiday. Thank you riu staff for making it so x

Stayed here for 2 weeks for honeymoon, in june 2011 (can't select that on the drop down). Staff were lovely, there was a chilled fruit plate in our room and a gift as it was our honeymoon which was very nice and unexpected. Housekeeping were excellent, leaving flowers and decorative towels. If you leave a small tip in fridge drinks are restocked every day rather than every other day. Poolside wasnt fun for us as was very busy, lots of kids and locals. Beach is bliss full, still has bars and staff with cocktails going up and down. Restaurant staff helpful, and attentive, steak and italian restaurants are well worth the booked visit. Only downside was the vendors, they are very naggy and intimidating to get you to buy things and at least two nights of the two weeks they took over the hotel lobby so it felt like running a gauntlet to get to get to the restaurant.

My girlfriend and I spent two weeks here for our summer holiday, and found it to be generally excellent.

We booked through First Choice, and got the Dreamliner from Manchester. The Dreamliner is pretty good, bit more legroom than normal. First long haul flight I've ever been on where you didn't get even one free drink though!

Arriving in Puerto Plata, you get your wrist band and board a bus to the hotel, which takes about 30 minutes or so. Once at the hotel, the check in process was very speedy, you get your keys and go straight to your room. Then, an eternity later, your luggage arrives.

The hotel is an absolute 5 star for cleanliness and service. The staff there, from the gardeners and pool cleaners to the waiters and chefs, are always smiling and saying "hola". There are constantly people going around cleaning up all the litter that is left by less thoughtful guests.

The pool at Bachata was great, there were always plenty of recliners. It was the busiest pool, no doubt due to the awesome swim up bar. Luxury! The Merengue pool could also be used, but we actually preferred to walk right to the other end and use the 3rd pool in the Merengue village. This area seems to be undergoing refurb, and so was seriously quiet all the time. There was also a bar next to it. The only time it was busy was at the weekends, when the locals stayed. I would recommend excursions at the weekend, as it got a bit too busy for my liking. A lot of reviews have complained about the locals, but they were no worse behaved than some of the Brits that were staying there, who you could sometimes hear bellowing and shrieking as they staggered back from the disco at 3am. Thanks for that, guys.

The food was certainly very tasty, and they really did try to vary the dishes, with themed nights like the Mexican and Chinese. I believe the noodles were spaghetti dipped in soy sauce, but no matter, there was always something to eat. However after 10 days or so, it all began to taste rather samey, which is surely inevitable. We went once to the Steakhouse, and wished we had gone more, because it was absolutely delicious!

Drinks-wise, the beer and wine is quite weak, maybe best to stick to the cocktails, because you get some pretty strong measures there. Don't forget to ask them to put the booze in the drinks though, as sometimes they don't. You also get optics in your room, rum, vodka, brandy and gin, which are replaced every two days. If you need to have them replaced that often though, then I think you may have a problem. Get help.

Speaking of the rooms, they were very nice. Lovely wee balcony to sit on, seconds from the beach and pools, but just far enough away that you don't get bothered by noise from the entertainment. The double bed was two beds pushed together, which sadly seems to be standard practice in hotels across the world. The bed was comfortable, although my one seemed to have a plastic lining to the mattress that made a hellish noise anytime I moved, presumably in case someone over indulges on the free drinks and wets the bed. It felt like being at school camp or something.

The beach was long and usually quite quiet as everyone was at the pool. Never underestimate the appeal of the swim up bar. There was plenty of shade, masses of loungers, free watersports (snorkelling, pedallos etc). There is usually a strong breeze on the beach, which is pleasant, but does mean that the water is dangerous to swim in. For the full 14 days we were there, every single day was a "red flag day", meaning the waters were unsafe.

The animation team were terrific, man they work a long day, but their smiles and jokes never falter. The shows in the evening were usually worth a watch, personal favourites being the Michael Jackson tribute and the Rock Station show.

The reps were always on hand during the stay, and gave us a refund on an excursion to the cable car that went horribly, nightmarishly wrong. But that's a different review altogether.

So yeah, I would definitely recommend Riu Bachata for a stay in the DR.
