The Tropical at Lifestyle Holidays Vacation Resort
Ranked #11 of 40 Hotels in Puerto Plata
Reviewed 19 April 2014

The beach and weather were perfect. The pools were great, the rooms were dated but very clean. We only slept and showered in our room. The staff is friendly and accommodating. We did the Waterfalls and Paradise Island excursion and had a great time/food/service and a good guide on both. The shows at the colosseum were entertaining. We were a party of 13...9 adults and 4 kids aged 14,9,9,8. The hotel does not have a family feel as there were many couples and friend groups but there were enough families there and enough activities that the kids had a great time and the adults loved not being at a family centered hotel, like Nickelodeon Hotel, with kids everywhere. The best part of the vacation were Lenny Kravitz, John Cena, Mosquito and Coffee...they worked the activities/pool area and were very professional, able to interact well with kids and adults. My son cried when we had to leave because he was going to miss them. At about $1200 per person for 7 days all inclusive with first class seats on the plane I'd say it was well worth it. We had a great time.

Room Tip: Don't worry about the room...you are never in it!

Like you, before booking our all - inclusive vacation to The Tropical at Lifestyle Holidays, we read probably 50 reviews on Trip Advisor. Like any resort, the reviews varied....some guests loved it, some guests said to not waste our money. We are writing this review as two women in our mid - twenties and hope that if you only read 1 review, this one is it!

We booked our 4 night/5 day all - inclusive vacation through Cheap Caribbean and had ABSOLUTELY NO PROBLEMS! We've read some very negative reviews about CC and were nervous after booking with them, but our trip couldn't have gone any smoother! When we booked online, at first, it didn't go through. The CC representative called us immediately to confirm that it had in fact gone through. We were VERY pleased with CC! :)

Now, on to The Tropical! The resort is like a diamond in the ruff! The grounds are exceptionally clean, with palm trees and flowers everywhere! Our room was on the 2nd floor and although we couldn't see the ocean from our room, we didn't mind. The room was basic, but clean. Our room had a cathedral ceiling with a ceiling fan, refrigerator, hair dryer, etc. Some of the other reviews talk about the TV, but if you are booking this hotel with the intent to watch TV, you might as well stay home. We weren't in our room very often, but had no major problems with the room! The beds and pillows were extremely comfy! Other reviews talked about the window in the bathroom....it is high up and is crystallized glass so you can't see in. Our one recommendation would be to put a door on the shower, since the water did tend to spray a little. However, the water did not get on the rest of the floor and we just tilted the shower head so that the water didn't spray everywhere. The shower pressure was a little weak and you can't drink the water from the sink. One of the screws for our door lock came out one night and we told the front desk. It was fixed within an hour. We also got a notification that they would be fumigating our room during one of the days and that it was safe for people and things. Still, we didn't feel comfortable and simply told the front desk that we didn't want this done during our stay. They had absolutely no problem with this. The housekeeping staff comes around early in the mornings, but you just put the Do Not Disturb sign on your door or tell them to come back later. They did an excellent job of keeping our room clean!

Like I said before, the grounds are BEAUTIFUL! The pools were always exceptionally clean and there was never any garbage/empty plastic cups lying around. The VIP beach (which is open to every guest) has cabana beds that are immaculate! Even with the sand, the white sheets, pillows, and towels are always perfect!!

The resort has many pools: adult only pool with swim - up bar, main pool, kid pool, etc. They are all in the same vicinity, but separated by a stone wall or barrier. You can walk down a flight of stairs to get to the VIP beach area, which is raised up from the regular beach area. This is where the cabanas are and they have 4 round pools that look like Jacuzzis, but aren't. You also have access to the sister hotel pools (Cofresi Palm, etc.). We spent most of our time in/around the main pool and the adult only pool. There is always a lifeguard on duty. The pools close at 6, but that wasn't a problem for us, since we always left around 5:30 to go back to our room to get ready for dinner.

The food was pretty good, with a lot of different Dominican choices. Breakfast was always at the 1 buffet at our resort (Casablanca). There's also a buffet at Cofresi that you can go to, but we never made it there. For breakfast, they had croissants, waffles, pancakes, and several omelet/egg stations. The lines can get a little long, but we were in no rush. They also have fresh fruit, bacon (which is not cooked as much as we liked it), a smoothie station, potatoes, and some Dominican breakfast choices. I got an omelet almost every day and was satisfied! :) Don't leave your plate at your table unsupervised, because a little birdie might get hungry. Some reviewers complained about the birds, but it's an open buffet (a roof, but no walls), so this is to be expected. We never had a major problem with the birds. For lunch, we also at the buffet or we ate at the VIP Beach where they have snacks (turkey club sandwiches, wings, salads, nacho chips, etc.) Both were pretty good! :) For dinner, the resort gives you a reservation to an a la carte restaurant. They choose both the restaurant and time based on availability. Our reservation was at the Italian restaurant at 9:00. If you would like to change the restaurant or the time of your reservation, you can go during a specified time slow the day of your reservation. We told them that we have Italian all the time and would prefer a different restaurant. All they had open was Indian and Asian, so we choose the Asian restaurant and was able to switch our time to 8:30. The food at the Asian restaurant was decent....I ordered General Tso's chicken and although it was tasty, it tasted different from American General Tso's chicken. The other 2 nights we ate at the buffet and they had different theme nights (American BBQ, Gala Dinner, etc). The food there was pretty good....they had Dominican choices, a steak station, roasted chicken, pasta station, hamburgers, rice, soup, salad, etc. They also have passion fruit for dessert, which you need to try! Make sure you put sugar on it! :) Our first night there was Sunday, which is the Welcome Party at the peninsula. There is a HUGE buffet with any kind of food you can imagine! It was very good! There is also a sushi bar at the resort. We were nervous to try the sushi at first, but they only serve cooked sushi (crab, fried fish, and veggie). We liked it! :)

Some reviewers commented about plastic cups not being washed, so we brought our own plastic cups. But, when we got there, all of the bars were using throw - a - way plastic cups, so we didn't have any need for our cups we had brought from home. Other reviews commented about people harassing you to purchase a time share. It might be because we look young, but we were only asked 1 time on our entire vacation if we wanted a tour of the resort. I said no and that was it. There are some guys that come around asking you if you want to participate in horseback riding or take a ride on the banana boat but they are nice and if you just say no, they leave you alone. If they come back, just pretend you're sleeping! :)

LAST, but DEFINITELY not LEAST.....the Animation Team MAKES THIS RESORT! The team dedicates their life to making your experience enjoyable. They work from 10 in the morning until 11 at night...never lacking energy!!! In my opinion, these should be the highest paid people at the resort. They have activities planned from 10 am - 12 pm and then again from 3 pm - 5 pm...if you're not sure about the activities, you can check the board near the Animation desk. The music is only loud during those times because there are activities going on! We personally loved the loud music, but if you don't like it, then just go sit on the VIP beach. From 12 - 3, the music is softer. We participated in a dart tournament, a mini golf tournament, were judges for a drink making competition, learned the merengue, participated in Olympic style relay races, and did daily water aerobics with John Cena! They also have a basketball hoop in the water, as well as a volleyball net in the water. The Animation Team is AMAZING!! They also have nightly activities at 8:00, such as Bingo and bachata lessons. Every night at 9:30, they have a show at the Colesseum, which is at Cofresi next door. One night they had a show dedicated to Michael Jackson...another night an African show...another night a Dominican show where they dress in traditional Dominican costumes. Our first night there was the Welcome Party with the huge buffet....this is also a show on a huge stage. Afterwards, they have a band and people go up on stage and dance and they spray foam everywhere. There is ALWAYS something to do!!! We enjoyed all of it! The Animation Team makes a CONSTANT effort to get you involved in EVERYTHING! They remember your name from day to day and come talk to you on a daily basis. They truly make you feel like you are part of their family! I've been to several resorts in Mexico and Aruba and NONE of them have an Animation Team like this one! They are funny, helpful, encouraging, and most importantly, make every person feel like they are important. What more could you ask for? Their dedication and enthusiasm to their job is inspiring. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU to John Cena, Mosquito (the little bugger), Tairis, Lenny Kravitz, and Coffee (super professional!) for making our vacation lively and always providing us with entertainment! We miss you already and most likely will be back in the near future! :)

A special shout out to Nelson and Andres at the swim - up bar who always remembered our drinks from day to day! Also, Melvin and Kelvin at Casablanca who always made us feel important during our breakfasts and lunches. The staff at The Tropical is TOP NOTCH! WE LOVE THEM ALL! xoxo

We loved the service & friendly staff at the resort. The food was excellent. We especially liked the royal treatment we received. The World Welcome party was off the chain and the Sunday party leaves you speechless. My family made friends for life there. Now our children want to live in D.R. We loved the water aerobics with John Cena and Johnny Bravo! Every day for a week we exercised, laughed and had fun with these wonderful guys: Coffee, Moskito, Puchi Puchi, George of the Jungle and Carmelo! Well never forget our wonderful time there but you will never forget us either! Don, Val and their pretty girls and SEXY CHOCOLATE and his beautiful family!!!!

The location was beautiful, nice beach, great pools. Room was so-so. Definitely less than I'd expect from an international resort. The toilet flushed very poorly, the shower was terrible, and the ceiling dripped water; it took 3 calls to get that fixed. The food was OK, but seldom hot. Long line-up for omelets every day. REALLY disappointed in the lack of seafood! The drinks were very inconsistent and, in some cases, unrecognizable. There were only certain things available at the pool bar, and they weren't very good. The drinks on the "VIP" beach (the only one available; a scaled-down version of the actual VIP beach) were much better, but only available during the day. Some of the staff were excellent (David and Andres at the pool bar, Melvin serving tables at the Casablanca, Emely at the reception desk, the maids did a wonderful job, the beach servers were excellent), and some were terrible. There was a SERIOUS language problem; if you don't speak Spanish, you aren't getting full service. We called security one night because someone was trying to get into our room (probably just a mistake, but we were 3 women alone), and the people answering the phone only spoke Spanish; security NEVER came! Because it's a "buy-in" resort, there were constant reminders that we weren't VIPs, and couldn't access many amenities. The first morning we were there we were taken for a "tour", which consisted of being walked across the street to the sales building. The pitch was not high pressure, at least. We got a tour of the VIP beach, to show us what we were missing, but that was it. I didn't like the beach and pools being closed in the afternoon/evening. The beach area we had access to was locked at 6 p.m., so we were kicked out. The pool was open until 7 p.m., but no service at the swim-up bar after 6. All the same, it's hard not to have a good time: ocean, sand, food and drinks taken to your cabana or table or pool stool; who wouldn't love that? But I'm sure you can get that at another resort, in English, without the sales pitch.

I love to travel, probably one of the best resorts to go to with friends and family. Staff makes the trip that much funner :). Went with a group of 5 25 year old girls, 2 moms and my grandmother, had a blast with everyone. Having the VIP membership is the only way to do it! The vip beaches, pools, restaurants are fabulous! Hookah bar is definitely my favorite spot to relax. The shows and entertainment were great. The staff was extremely friendly, MUY CALIENTE! and personable we made a lot of great friends! I had a FUN time with John Cena, he is an amazing dancer and such a sweetheart. The bartenders at VIP pool were very fun as well. I cant wait to come back to see the staff, and have another amazing vacation with my girlfriends :)! I miss it already, Cant wait to escape NYC and get back to Puerto Plata in december!
