“Great Boutique Hotel: 4.5 stars”
Reviewed 18 May 2014 via mobile

I came here with friends and was not expecting much. This is a very good boutique hotel. Quiet, amazing food, great service and a very relaxing week of vacation. If you are in Area, stop by the restaurant. The chef is a Michelin rated chef from Italy and the food is truly magnificent. Highly recommended.

Wife and I spent a week at the resort and upgraded to the Dona Rosa suite. Massive room with a balcony overlooking the beach and the water through mangrove and other trees. Our room had the separate bedroom along with the living room and dining area overlooking the tropical pond.

We spared no expense which ultimately made this a touch expensive. The food is good and we are fairly picky (snobby) eaters from New York. We are also vegetarian and we had plenty of options. The main restaurant is a well appointed place with an Italian chef (from Genoa) who makes a terrific pesto sauce for pastas.

The resort itself is within a larger gated private area with other resorts and condos within. However, the Casa Colonial has its own gated entry way with good security throughout the grounds. Next door you have the all inclusive Barcelo resort with its typical American idiots causing a huge scene for no apparent reason. Apparently volleyball requires primal screams and screeching women. But the beach for the Colonial is private and you feel like no one else is around unless you aim to see others. Service on the beach is good but again, a touch expensive for my expectation of the Caribbean. Diet Coke - 4 dollars. Prosecco - 15 dollars. Since the Colonial is not an all inclusive, be prepared for a normal priced American meal every time.

The rooftop pool is spectacular and relaxing. You cannot hear anyone or anything up there. The hot tubs overlook the ocean and the pool is just the right size and temperature. Again, we felt like we were all by ourselves at times with just the service attendant waiting on us for drinks, food et al.

The service throughout the resort was first class all the way. Basilia (the GM) and her staff are top notch - from the spa, to the breakfast service, to the cleaning crew, to the room service staff and specifically the people who did our romantic dinner on the beach. This is a solid move if you have the ability. The dinner can be a la carte or fixed.

As for what room to request - we paid extra for the Dona Rosa. But if you dont need the extra space or the massive bathroom with bath tub over looking the ocean, stay on the third floor overlooking the beach. The Dona Rosa is on the 2nd and our balcony could be seen from the ground. In addition, we had an obstructed view of the ocean. Still great but I would have preferred the top floor over the trees. Top floor is the 3rd floor.

The spa is terrific and specifically, Nania is without a doubt the best masseuse I have ever had. I did two in 4 days. The spa has a sauna, steamroom, and relaxation room. The mint tea following was amazing.

Everything can be arranged through the hotel - including the car service from and to the airport. Its only 15 minutes from the airport to this resort. If you choose to go into town, stay away from the local scene near the Ponderosa Cafe after 9 PM. We did venture off property and ate once at a good pizza spot.

This place is majestic and magical and makes you feel like a star. And what more do you really want when you get away.

One of the top 5 resorts my wife and I have ever stayed at and we have done all the big names. St Regis Bora Bora, Leela Palace in Goa, Four Seasons in Maui, Cinque Terra in Italy, Waldorf in Manhattan, et al.

Venture out of the beach area to the left to see clearer water. If there is one thing a touch negative is that the water wasnt as clear as other beaches we have been to. But it was not an issue for us.

Room Tip: Rooms on the beach side are good Third floor is best Corner Suites, like the Dona Rosa, are more...

From the second we drove through the private gates of Casa Colonial, we were mesmerized by it's beauty! The well kept grounds and landscaping were breathtaking. The service staff were warm, polite, and professional. The management was accessible and user friendly. Talk about roof top pools… WOW!! We could not turn our heads without the service staff offering us more drinks. Not to mention the evening where we took advantage of the oceanside romantic dinner that was offered in our package. It was fabulous in and of itself, however, when we made our way back to our junior suite there was a dual path of rose pedals leading to the jacuzzi as well as our bed! SEXY!!! Complimentary there is a golf cart shuttle to liquor stores, banks, shopping mall, etc. Can't beat it ! Gotta go. We are going again!

Room Tip: Take advantage of the private balcony breakfast's as well as the beach massage… and don't fo...

I'll preface my review by stating that I'm an admitted snob when it comes to travel. This place met my expectations and then some. The food was incredible - fresh, flavorful. The grounds, buildings, and room were immaculate. The service was beyond compare. The spa was small, but great. We enjoyed breakfast each morning looking out to the ocean. There were no crowds, no loud obnoxious people, just a calm, serene environment. In fact, I wouldn't even consider another hotel in Puerto Plata - my experience was THAT positive. Already planning another trip back!

My husband and I stayed here for 3 days for our honeymoon. We arrived from thee reception to a rose petal y candle lit path from inside the door to the bed. We stayed in the ocean front suite and the waves were easily audible from inside the room. It was truley a fantasy. We enjoyed breakfast at the rooftop pool. This infinity pool and hot tubs were so lovely. We are happy we chose this hotel for our honeymoon; who knows maybe we will celebrate an anniversary here some day :)

Thank you so much for your kind review. We did look into the check-in delay (as that should never happen) and it appears that was due to the room upgrade you were given due to the king bed not being available in the room type you requested. We hope this made your ‘5 star’ vacation even better! We look forward to welcoming you back very soon.
