If you are looking for a clean, safe, conveniently located, basic accommodation, this is your place.
The apartment itself was clean and bright with windows with screens that could be opened wide to let in the breeze. There were ceiling fans in both the bedroom and the main room and a TV with quite a few channels available. The kitchen was equipped with basic wares for cooking, cleaning, and eating, although a second, quality cooking pot would have been a plus. I was given two bath towels and a hand towel, but a bath mat would have been appreciated. Because of the design of the complex, this small apartment (for only one or two people) had a privacy issue – the people sitting on the veranda next door could easily see directly into the bedroom if the curtain was drawn back. Luckily, no one was there during my stay, so it was not an issue for me, but it could be if there are lots of people. I don’t think the larger apartments had the same issue. The (free) wifi signal was extremely strong and reliable throughout the entire apartment, which was fantastic. The complex was also very clean and safe. The pool area in the back of the complex had lots of lounge chairs, as well as a table and chairs for eating, and had big shade tarps so that you could relax outside without the sun burning your skin.
I thought the overall location of the complex was excellent both relative to Puerto Plata and within the gated Costambar community. It was about a two-minute walk to the beach and the rustic beach cafes. The beach was reasonably well-kept for the number of people there (which was a lot when I visited during Dominican school spring break) and there were plenty of beach chairs for rent or space to lay out your towel. There was an ATM, small grocery shop, pharmacy, and several local restaurants about a 7 minute walk away – all of which I visited multiple times. The price of a private taxi to the major area attractions (downtown Puerto Plata, the Cable Car, 27 Waterfalls, and Ocean World) was reasonable and far cheaper than booking a tour, and if you have your own vehicle the location is an easy drive to these same places. Many of the taxi drivers spoke basic English, so I felt comfortable getting around.
The service at the complex was great. Diana responded to all emails and questions within minutes and her husband was on the premises frequently to answer questions. Juan, the day/evening manager, was always around to call for a taxi or try to help. If there was something that I needed, all I had to do was ask. If you are not renting your own car, I recommend booking a ride from the airport to the complex with the owners as they charge a fair price, they send a driver that speaks English, and there is no issue with location or directions. If you are renting a car, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find once you arrive at the main entrance to the community.
Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend this accommodation to a person, group, or family that is low-frills and low-maintenance. Do keep in mind, that if you don’t speak Spanish, and you expect everyone to speak fluent English, you will be frustrated. This area has a very local flare, which may not be for people easily flustered by language barriers. If you can handle not always being understood, do most of your own vacation planning, and don’t mind cleaning up after yourself, you will save quite a bit of money and have just as nice of a vacation at this location.

Nice overall, clean, good location....right up the street from Clara's restaurant on the beach. Nice pool and Juan was great (the property manager) but bed was very uncomfortable. Very cheap mattresses and linen would not even stay on the bed. I went and bought my own. Other than that it was a nice place to stay.
